Book The Golden Jubilee of Syracuse University 1870 1920 Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Golden Jubilee of Syracuse University 1870 1920 Classic Reprint written by Frank Smalley and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2016-09-27 with total page 216 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Golden Jubilee of Syracuse University, 1870-1920 It was suggested that the book be of an illustrative character, portraying the many fine buildings of the institution and covering, of course, the historical and anniversary material, including addresses, etc., but that suggestion was not ap proved for several reasons. In the first place, we have a fine Bulletin, just issued, giving views of all the University buildings. Why repeat them in this? Again, we proposed a small and simple volume, setting forth in historic form the facts and events of the Jubilee. It is to be regretted that in the absence of manuscripts for some of the addresses provision was not made to get full and complete stenographic reports of the ad dresses. To some extent, this course was followed, but not with entire satisfaction. We have reproduced several of the views printed on the occasion by the three Syracuse newspapers, the post-standard, the Herald and the journal, and we wish here to acknowledge our indebtedness to the managers and employes of all these fine papers for the exceeding kindness and courtesy shown by them in furnishing every possible facility for reproducing in book form the material taken from their various issues. Book Women and American Socialism 1870 1920

Download or read book Women and American Socialism 1870 1920 written by Mari Jo Buhle and published by University of Illinois Press. This book was released on 2023-02-03 with total page 388 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Socialist women faced the often thorny dilemma of fitting their concern with women's rights into their commitment to socialism. Mari Jo Buhle examines women's efforts to agitate for suffrage, sexual and economic emancipation, and other issues and the political and intellectual conflicts that arose in response. In particular, she analyzes the clash between a nativist socialism influence by ideas of individual rights and the class-based socialism championed by German American immigrants. As she shows, the two sides diverged, often greatly, in their approaches and their definitions of women's emancipation. Their differing tactics and goals undermined unity and in time cost women their independence within the larger movement.

Book Anglophone Indian Women Writers 1870 1920

Download or read book Anglophone Indian Women Writers 1870 1920 written by Ellen Brinks and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-04-15 with total page 254 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The result of extensive archival recovery work, Ellen Brinks's study fills a significant gap in our understanding of women's literary history of the South Asian subcontinent under colonialism and of Indian women's contributions and responses to developing cultural and political nationalism. As Brinks shows, the invisibility of Anglophone Indian women writers cannot be explained simply as a matter of colonial marginalization or as a function of dominant theoretical approaches that reduce Indian women to the status of figures or tropes. The received narrative that British imperialism in India was perpetuated with little cultural contact between the colonizers and the colonized population is complicated by writers such as Toru Dutt, Krupabai Satthianadhan, Pandita Ramabai, Cornelia Sorabji, and Sarojini Naidu. All five women found large audiences for their literary works in India and in Great Britain, and all five were also deeply rooted in and connected to both South Asian and Western cultures. Their works created new zones of cultural contact and exchange that challenge postcolonial theory's tendencies towards abstract notions of the colonized women as passive and of English as a de-facto instrument of cultural domination. Brinks's close readings of these texts suggest new ways of reading a range of issues central to postcolonial studies: the relationship of colonized women to the metropolitan (literary) culture; Indian and English women's separate and joint engagements in reformist and nationalist struggles; the 'translatability' of culture; the articulation strategies and complex negotiations of self-identification of Anglophone Indian women writers; and the significance and place of cultural difference.

Book Henry Clay Frick and the Golden Age of Coal and Coke 1870 1920

Download or read book Henry Clay Frick and the Golden Age of Coal and Coke 1870 1920 written by Cassandra Vivian and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2020-04-09 with total page 231 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Once the beehive coke oven was perfected in Fayette County, Pennsylvania, the coal and coke industry began to flourish and supply other fledgling industries with the fuel they needed to succeed. The thrust of this growth came from Henry Clay Frick, who opened his first coal mines in the Morgan Valley of Fayette County in 1871. There, he helped lead the industry, making it the major developmental force in industrial America. This book traces the birth and growth of the early coal and coke industry from 1870 to 1920, primarily in Fayette and Westmoreland Counties. Beyond Frick's importance to the industry, other major topics covered in this history include the lives and struggles of the miners and immigrants who worked in the industry, the growth of unions and the many strikes in the region, and the attempts to clean the surrounding waterways from the horrific pollution that resulted from industrial development. Perhaps the most significant fact is that this book uses primary sources contemporary with the golden age of the coal and coke industry. That effort offers an alternative view and helps repair the common portrayal of Frick as corrupt by showing his work as that of an industrial genius.
