When she marries Paul Marchant it seems a perfect match - for Paul, owner of a much smaller fleet of ships, could take care both of Bridie and of her business interests. But slowly Bridie begins to have her doubts about Paul, about his love, and about his business dealings. When his actions become too much to bear, Bridie decides she must fight back. With the help of Ellie Hopkins, she seeks to trap Paul in a web of his own making... In the dramatic events that follow, both Ellie and Bridie are nearly destroyed - can they find happiness with the men they love? Sea Mistress is the fifth title in Iris Gower's Cordwainers series. Book The Arts and Crafts of Literacy

Download or read book The Arts and Crafts of Literacy written by Andrea Brigaglia and published by Walter de Gruyter GmbH & Co KG. This book was released on 2017-09-25 with total page 368 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During the last two decades, the (re-)discovery of thousands of manuscripts in different regions of sub-Saharan Africa has questioned the long-standing approach of Africa as a continent only characterized by orality and legitimately assigned to the continent the status of a civilization of written literacy. However, most of the existing studies mainly aim at serving literary and historical purposes, and focus only on the textual dimension of the manuscripts. This book advances on the contrary a holistic approach to the study of these manuscripts and gather contributions on the different dimensions of the manuscript, i.e. the materials, the technologies, the practices and the communities involved in the production, commercialization, circulation, preservation and consumption. The originality of this book is found in its methodological approach as well as its comparative geographic focus, presenting studies on a continental scale, including regions formerly neglected by existing scholarship, provides a unique opportunity to expand our still scanty knowledge of the different manuscript cultures that the African continent has developed and that often can still be considered as living traditions.

Book The Undertaker s Daughter

Download or read book The Undertaker s Daughter written by Kate Mayfield and published by Simon and Schuster. This book was released on 2014-08-28 with total page 333 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 'On the last day of 1959 my father, the Beau Brummel of morticians, piled us into his green and white Desoto in which we looked like a moving pack of Salem cigarettes. He drove away from Lanesboro, the city in which we all were born, and into a small town on the Kentucky and Tennessee border. It was only a ninety-minute drive, but it might as well have been to Alaska. When our big boat of a car glided into Jubilee we circled the town square and headed towards the residential section of Main Street. My father pulled the car over and our five dark heads turned to face a huge, slightly run down house. My parents were total strangers to this tiny enclave, but it didn't matter because my father had finally realised his dream in this old house, which was to own his own funeral home.'

In the final chapter of Bluebird and Grey Wolf’s Cherokee descendants, the story of Amelia Clay Stone, their great granddaughter, will continue to evolve. Not only the sad legacy of the Trail of Tears, but Amelia’s abusive experiences at the Cherokee Girls’ Mission will take their psychological toll on her children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren. Meanwhile, young Bonita McKindle, the love interest of Amelia’s sons, Clay and Ross, struggles to overcome the damage brought upon her by tragedy, poverty, and neglect. Forced to quit school to care for her critically ill, alcoholic father, Bonita desperately yearns to escape and make a better life for herself, only to encounter more heartache. When she gives birth to her daughter Miranda, Bonita experiences new hope, but Miranda and her children will soon find their own demons to battle. All the while, the fate of a special family heirloom—the stone Bluebird carried on the Trail of Tears from Georgia so long ago—rests in Amelia’s hands. It has been passed down through the generations to Bluebird’s descendants. Will the aging Amelia find any family member who is worthy to carry it on to the next generation? Or will the traditional Cherokee beliefs the stone represents be lost forever?

Book excerpt: In Embodied Memory, Anat Feinberg offers the first English-language study of the controversial dramatist George Tabori. A Jewish-Hungarian playwright and novelist, Tabori is a unique figure in postwar German theatre -- one of the few theatre people since Bertolt Brecht to embody "the ideal union" of playwright, director, theatre manager, and actor.
