Book Flamenco on the Global Stage

Download or read book Flamenco on the Global Stage written by K. Meira Goldberg and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2015-10-05 with total page 347 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The language of the body is central to the study of flamenco. From the records of the Inquisition, to 16th century literature, to European travel diaries, the Spanish dancer beguiles and fascinates. The word flamenco evokes the image of a sensuous and rebellious woman--the bailaora --whose movements seduce the audience, only to reject their attention with a stomp of defiance. The dancer's body is an agent of ideological resistance, conveying a conflicting desire for subjectivity and autonomy and implying deeply held ideas about history, national identity, femininity and masculinity. This collection of new essays provides an overview of flamenco scholarship, illuminating flamenco's narrative and chronology and addressing some common misconceptions. The contributors offer fresh perspectives on age-old themes and suggest new paradigms for flamenco as a cultural practice. Instructors considering this book for use in a course may request an examination copy here.

Book News for All the People The Epic Story of Race and the American Media

Download or read book News for All the People The Epic Story of Race and the American Media written by Juan González and published by Verso Books. This book was released on 2011-10-31 with total page 463 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A landmark narrative history of American media that puts race at the center of the story. Here is a new, sweeping narrative history of American news media that puts race at the center of the story. From the earliest colonial newspapers to the Internet age, America’s racial divisions have played a central role in the creation of the country’s media system, just as the media has contributed to—and every so often, combated—racial oppression. News for All the People reveals how racial segregation distorted the information Americans received from the mainstream media. It unearths numerous examples of how publishers and broadcasters actually fomented racial violence and discrimination through their coverage. And it chronicles the influence federal media policies exerted in such conflicts. It depicts the struggle of Black, Latino, Asian, and Native American journalists who fought to create a vibrant yet little-known alternative, democratic press, and then, beginning in the 1970s, forced open the doors of the major media companies. The writing is fast-paced, story-driven, and replete with memorable portraits of individual journalists and media executives, both famous and obscure, heroes and villains. It weaves back and forth between the corporate and government leaders who built our segregated media system—such as Herbert Hoover, whose Federal Radio Commission eagerly awarded a license to a notorious Ku Klux Klan organization in the nation’s capital—and those who rebelled against that system, like Pittsburgh Courier publisher Robert L. Vann, who led a remarkable national campaign to get the black-face comedy Amos ’n’ Andy off the air. Based on years of original archival research and up-to-the-minute reporting and written by two veteran journalists and leading advocates for a more inclusive and democratic media system, News for All the People should become the standard history of American media.

Book Revelation

    Book Details:
  • Author : Amos Yong
  • Publisher : Presbyterian Publishing Corp
  • Release : 2021-09-14
  • ISBN : 1646981995
  • Pages : 354 pages

Download or read book Revelation written by Amos Yong and published by Presbyterian Publishing Corp. This book was released on 2021-09-14 with total page 354 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book of Revelation stands as one of the most challenging and inspiring in the Christian canon. While giving rise to much unhelpful speculation, its core message of the active sovereignty of God in a hostile world has given courage and comfort throughout Christian history. In this volume, Amos Yong analyzes the message of Revelation to its earliest readers and speaks to its ongoing meaning for believers today. The volumes in the Belief series offer a fresh and invigorating approach to all the books of the Bible. Building on a wide range of sources from biblical studies and the Christian tradition, renowned scholars focus less on traditional historical and literary angles in favor of a theologically focused commentary that considers the contemporary relevance of the text. Why then, and why now are overarching questions asked throughout the volumes in the series.

Book Nanocomposites

Download or read book Nanocomposites written by Subbarayan Sivasankaran and published by BoD – Books on Demand. This book was released on 2019-01-23 with total page 232 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: To have unimaginably outstanding useful properties (physical, mechanical, electrical, optical, chemical, and magnetic) in a single material design is a highly challenging task in the material science community, which can be achieved through nanocomposites. These nanocomposites can be produced from all conventional materials, which include polymers, metals/alloys, and ceramics, by modifying their internal structures. Due to modification of the structures of all kinds of conventional materials, at either the nano or ultra-fine level, the materials exhibit superior performance, which is a boon for all fields of science. In general, nanocomposite materials can be manufactured by solid-state processing techniques, liquid metallurgy, ex-situ and in-situ powder metallurgy, and other basic science synthesis routes. Furthermore, the possibility of making environmentally friendly materials is also possible with nanotechnology. Therefore, to investigate and demonstrate developments in the field of nanocomposites, this book is targeted at all the scientific personnel working in this field.

Book Preaching Power

    Book Details:
  • Author : Charles A. Witschorik
  • Publisher : Wipf and Stock Publishers
  • Release : 2013-10-21
  • ISBN : 1630870226
  • Pages : 337 pages

Download or read book Preaching Power written by Charles A. Witschorik and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2013-10-21 with total page 337 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book uses a gender perspective to examine sermons and other officially endorsed discourses of the Catholic Church in eighteenth- and nineteenth-century Mexico City. Analyzing the different ways that, over time, gendered images, metaphors, and hagiographical examples were used in sermons and other documents, the book examines how the church negotiated challenges to its cultural and ideological hegemony. Beginning with sermons from the early eighteenth century, the author follows the evolution of church discourses as preachers reveled in Baroque analogies, embraced ideals of the Enlightenment, targeted women's alleged moral vices at times of political crisis, and ultimately turned to notions of women as "the devout sex" in order to combat incipient liberalism. Put another way, liberals after independence were not the only ones to assert a kind of "republican motherhood": preachers countered with a vision of "Catholic motherhood" that had great resonance in Mexico even into the twentieth century.

Book C infinity Differentiable Spaces

Download or read book C infinity Differentiable Spaces written by Juan A. Navarro González and published by Springer. This book was released on 2003-12-09 with total page 191 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The volume develops the foundations of differential geometry so as to include finite-dimensional spaces with singularities and nilpotent functions, at the same level as is standard in the elementary theory of schemes and analytic spaces. The theory of differentiable spaces is developed to the point of providing a handy tool including arbitrary base changes (hence fibred products, intersections and fibres of morphisms), infinitesimal neighbourhoods, sheaves of relative differentials, quotients by actions of compact Lie groups and a theory of sheaves of Fréchet modules paralleling the useful theory of quasi-coherent sheaves on schemes. These notes fit naturally in the theory of C^\infinity-rings and C^\infinity-schemes, as well as in the framework of Spallek’s C^\infinity-standard differentiable spaces, and they require a certain familiarity with commutative algebra, sheaf theory, rings of differentiable functions and Fréchet spaces.

Book Practical Foundations of Business System Specifications

Download or read book Practical Foundations of Business System Specifications written by Haim Kilov and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-06-29 with total page 337 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "In the mathematics I can report no deficience, except that it be that men do not sufficiently understand the excellent use of the pure mathematics, in that they do remedy and cure many defects in the wit and faculties intellectual. For if the wit be too dull, they sharpen it; if too wandering, they fix it; if too inherent in the sense, they abstract it. " Roger Bacon (1214?-1294?) "Mathematics-the art and science of effective reasoning. " E. W. Dijkstra, 1976 "A person who had studied at a good mathematical school can do anything. " Ye. Bunimovich, 2000 This is the third book published by Kluwer based on the very successful OOPSLA workshops on behavioral semantics (the first two books were published in 1996 [KH 1996] and 1999 [KRS 1999]). These workshops fostered precise and explicit specifications of business and system semantics, independently of any (possible) realization. Some progress has been made in these areas, both in academia and in industry. At the same time, in too many cases only lip service to elegant specifica tions of semantics has been provided, and as a result the systems we build or buy are all too often not what they are supposed to be. We used to live with that, and quite often users relied on human intermediaries to "sort the things out. " This approach worked perfectly well for a long time.
