Book JTP An Energy conscious Transport Protocol for Wireless Ad Hoc Networks

Download or read book JTP An Energy conscious Transport Protocol for Wireless Ad Hoc Networks written by and published by . This book was released on 2006 with total page 11 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Within a recently developed low-power ad hoc network system, we present a transport protocol (JTP) whose goal is to reduce power consumption without trading off delivery requirements of applications. JTP has the following features: it is lightweight whereby end-nodes control in-network actions by encoding delivery requirements in packet headers; JTP enables applications to specify a range of reliability requirements, thus allocating the right energy budget to packets; JTP minimizes feedback control traffic from the destination by varying its frequency based on delivery requirements and stability of the network; JTP minimizes energy consumption by implementing in-network caching and increasing the chances that data retransmission requests from destinations hit these caches, thus avoiding costly source retransmissions; and JTP fairly allocates bandwidth among flows by backing off the sending rate of a source to account for in-network retransmissions on its behalf. Analysis and extensive simulations demonstrate the energy gains of JTP over one-size-fits-all transport protocols.

Book Routing with Cooperative Transmissions in Wireless Ad Hoc Networks

Download or read book Routing with Cooperative Transmissions in Wireless Ad Hoc Networks written by Aylin Aksu and published by LAP Lambert Academic Publishing. This book was released on 2009-09 with total page 76 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Cooperative transmissions emulating multi-antenna systems may help reduce the total energy consumption in wireless networks. In this book, we define a virtual Multiple-Input Single-Output (vMISO) link to be established when a group of transmitters jointly enable space-time communications with a single receiver. We present a novel approach in characterizing the optimal multi-hop vMISO routing in ad hoc networks. The key advantages of vMISO links are the increase in transmission range and the decrease in the required transmission energy due to diversity gain. Specifically, we solve a nonlinear program that minimizes the total energy cost of reliable end-to-end transmissions by selecting the optimal cooperation set. Our results indicate that a multi-hop vMISO system is energy efficient only when a few nodes cooperate at each hop. We design a new greedy geographical vMISO routing protocol. Also, we formulate the network lifetime maximization with vMISO routing as a nonlinear program. Then, we present a novel cooperation set selection and flow augmentation based routing heuristic that can significantly increase the network lifetime compared to Single-Input Single-Output systems.

Book Transport Protocols for Next Generation Wireless Data Networks

Download or read book Transport Protocols for Next Generation Wireless Data Networks written by Aravind Murugesan Velayutham and published by . This book was released on 2005 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Emerging wireless networks are characterized by increased heterogeneity in wireless access technologies as well as increased peer-to-peer communication among wireless hosts. The heterogeneity among wireless access interfaces mainly exists because of the fact that different wireless technologies deliver different performance trade-offs. Further, more and more infrastructure-less wireless networks such as ad-hoc networks are emerging to address several application scenarios including military and disaster recovery. These infrastructure-less wireless networks are characterized by the peer-to-peer communication model. In this thesis, we propose transport protocols that tackle the challenges that arise due to the above-mentioned properties of state-of-the-art wireless data networks. The main contributions of this work are as follows: 1. We determine the ideal nature and granularity of transport adaptation for efficient operation in heterogeneous wireless data networks by performing comprehensive experimental analysis. We then design and implement a runtime adaptive transport framework, *TP, which accommodates the capabilities of the ideal transport adaptation solution. 2. We prove that conversational transport protocols are not efficient under peer-to-peer wireless data networks. We then design and implement NCTP which is a non-conversational transport protocol.
