Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Why would anyone follow you? Joyful Leadership explores this provocative question and uncovers what author Carol Gabriella Norbeck discovered from more than thirty years of research and practice. The answer goes to the heart of leadership—the relationship between leader and follower—and has two parts. First, people want leaders of great character. Second, they want to follow someone who believes leadership is about service. Norbeck gathered the best leadership ideas from her research and created the know-how and the practical steps that form the leader’s character. Through facilitating hundreds of leadership workshops, she’s helped leaders develop the character traits others want to follow and learn how to lead people with a servant’s heart. Divided into two parts, part one focuses on loving God wholly by developing Christ-centered character traits. Part two centers on loving your neighbor through servanthood. Both parts contain core leadership practices and reflections on the Christian theology that supports them. Joyful Leadership shares practical steps that show you how to become the leader others want to follow.

Book The Joy of Leadership

Download or read book The Joy of Leadership written by Tal Ben-Shahar and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2017-08-07 with total page 245 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Think of the last time you were at your best and working in the zone. Now compare that to all the time you’ve spent just going through the motions. How would you quantify the difference between the two in terms of how you felt and what you produced? Would you rate it as a 5% difference. . . a 50% difference? Most people would describe the gulf between those two states of being as vast—as deep and wide as the Grand Canyon. For quality of experience, engagement, productivity, and just the sheer joy of living, the majority of people asked to rate the difference between flourishing and floundering found it to be around a factor of 10. In their work with managers and executives at leading companies around the world, authors Tal Ben-Shahar and Angus Ridgway have identified a select group of individuals who consistently perform at their peak, and who make work seem effortless and working with them feel easy. The name they’ve given to those lucky few is “10X Leaders”. You know who they are. They’re the team leaders who bring out the best in everyone. They’re the senior managers who drive growth and innovation. They’re the dream bosses, dream partners, and dream colleagues. There’s a good chance you’ve encountered at least one 10X leader in your career—you’re probably thinking of one right now. And you wondered how they did it. Dr. Ben-Shahar and Mr. Ridgway believe they know the answer. They have identified the core characteristics, behaviors, and cognitive styles that all 10X leaders share. Even better, they’ve developed a way for virtually anyone to cultivate those traits and ways of thinking in themselves to become happier, more effective, and more successful. In this powerful new book they describe their revolutionary SHARP (Strength, Health, Absorption, Relationships, and Purpose) program for becoming a 10X leader. They tell you the true stories of people at organizations around the globe who’ve become more effective by learning to use these performance multipliers. And they offer proven strategies for mastering those characteristics and habits for lasting change—the kind of change that can bring you greater fulfilment and success, not just at work, but in every area of your life.

Book excerpt: A 2018 Nautilus Book Award Winner for Business and Leadership! The founder of Menlo Innovations and author of the business culture cult classic Joy, Inc offers an inspirational guide to leaders seeking joy in the challenge of leading others. Rich Sheridan's Joy, Inc. told the story of how his tiny software company in Ann Arbor, Michigan achieved success and renown by embracing offbeat culture and human-centered values. In Chief Joy Officer, he turns his attention from culture to leadership, and draws on his experience running Menlo and consulting elsewhere to offer a wise, provocative guide on how anyone can build leadership capacity for joy within their own organization. Chief Joy Officer offers sage, hard-won advice to any manager or leader who yearns to make more of an impact on the lives of others, including: * Self-understanding is the cornerstone for every virtue of leadership: authenticity, trust, humility, and optimism. * Good leaders make more leaders: Learn to judge your performance not on whether people are doing what they're told, but whether they're developing independent leadership capacity. * Influencing up is just as important is influencing down: how to encourage different thinking in those above you in your organizations. Filled with colorful anecdotes from Sheridan's personal journey and wisdom from many leadership mentors, Chief Joy Officer offers an approachable, down-to-earth philosophy and practice that will help even the most disillusioned of middle managers bring a renewed sense of purpose to their work building others.

Book Joyful Human Rights

    Book Details:
  • Author : William Paul Simmons
  • Publisher : University of Pennsylvania Press
  • Release : 2019-01-24
  • ISBN : 0812295749
  • Pages : 305 pages

Download or read book Joyful Human Rights written by William Paul Simmons and published by University of Pennsylvania Press. This book was released on 2019-01-24 with total page 305 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In popular, legal, and academic discourses, the term "human rights" is now almost always discussed in relation to its opposite: human rights abuses. Syllabi, textbooks, and articles focus largely on victimization and trauma, with scarcely a mention of a positive dimension. Joy, especially, is often discounted and disregarded. William Paul Simmons asserts that there is a time and place—and necessity—in human rights work for being joyful. Joyful Human Rights leads us to challenge human rights' foundations afresh. Focusing on joy shifts the way we view victims, perpetrators, activists, and martyrs; and mitigates our propensity to express paternalistic or heroic attitudes toward human rights victims. Victims experience joy—indeed, it is often what sustains them and, in many cases, what best facilitates their recovery from trauma. Instead of reducing individuals merely to victim status or the tragedies they have experienced, human rights workers can help harmed individuals reclaim their full humanity, which includes positive emotions such as joy. A joy-centered approach provides new insights into foundational human rights issues such as motivations of perpetrators , trauma and survivorship, the work of social movements and activists, philosophical and historical origins of human rights, and the politicization of human rights. Many concepts rarely discussed in the field play important roles here, including social erotics, clowning, dancing, expressive arts therapy, posttraumatic growth, and the Buddhist terms metta (loving kindness) and mudita (sympathetic joy). Joyful Human Rights provides a new framework—one based upon a more comprehensive understanding of human experiences—for theorizing and practicing a more affirmative and robust notion of human rights.

Book excerpt: Make small changes to your surroundings and create extraordinary happiness in your life with groundbreaking research from designer and TED star Ingrid Fetell Lee. Next Big Idea Club selection—chosen by Malcolm Gladwell, Susan Cain, Dan Pink, and Adam Grant as one of the "two most groundbreaking new nonfiction reads of the season!" "This book has the power to change everything! Writing with depth, wit, and insight, Ingrid Fetell Lee shares all you need to know in order to create external environments that give rise to inner joy." —Susan Cain, author of Quiet and founder of Quiet Revolution Have you ever wondered why we stop to watch the orange glow that arrives before sunset, or why we flock to see cherry blossoms bloom in spring? Is there a reason that people—regardless of gender, age, culture, or ethnicity—are mesmerized by baby animals, and can't help but smile when they see a burst of confetti or a cluster of colorful balloons? We are often made to feel that the physical world has little or no impact on our inner joy. Increasingly, experts urge us to find balance and calm by looking inward—through mindfulness or meditation—and muting the outside world. But what if the natural vibrancy of our surroundings is actually our most renewable and easily accessible source of joy? In Joyful, designer Ingrid Fetell Lee explores how the seemingly mundane spaces and objects we interact with every day have surprising and powerful effects on our mood. Drawing on insights from neuroscience and psychology, she explains why one setting makes us feel anxious or competitive, while another fosters acceptance and delight—and, most importantly, she reveals how we can harness the power of our surroundings to live fuller, healthier, and truly joyful lives.

Book Enabling Joy

  • Author : Paul Armstrong
  • Publisher : Createspace Independent Publishing Platform
  • Release : 2017-11-09
  • ISBN : 9781976582349
  • Pages : 296 pages

Download or read book Enabling Joy written by Paul Armstrong and published by Createspace Independent Publishing Platform. This book was released on 2017-11-09 with total page 296 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Are you a team leader, committee chair, event orchestrator or project manager... and you need to lead but without the mantle of managerial authority? In Enabling Joy, Paul Armstrong offers both a fable and quick guide on what to do as a leader. Even when we, like the characters in this fable, have many of the desirable leadership qualities, the question still remains; what do I really do as a leader? Joanna, Dayzie, Megan, Andrew, and Nico are all trying to help their CEO, Tom Waldmor, who is under the scrutiny of the board of directors challenging him to turn some things around at Coeurs, including stopping the steady loss of talented people from the company. Tom has put Joanna on point for figuring out why being conscientious managers and serving leaders is not the whole answer. Joanna unpacks an answer that has too nice of a sound to it, so the leadership team has to build group understanding and buy-in, but only in concert with their own individual journeys, so that they can translate what sounds like a nice idea into a real business application...all before Tom gets the ax. Throughout the story, Armstrong reveals a joy definition, and challenges each of us to consider enabling joy as the primary calling that we have as leaders. Basing his work on Biblical teaching as well as the teachings of respected business leaders such as W. Edwards Deming, Frederick Herzberg and Noriaki Kano, with references to works by Patrick Lencioni and Dan Pink, Armstrong shows that enabling joy is a both a spiritually sound personal purpose and a necessity for organizational greatness.

Book The Book of Joy

  • ISBN : 0399185062
  • Pages : 368 pages

Download or read book The Book of Joy written by Dalai Lama and published by Penguin. This book was released on 2016-09-20 with total page 368 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An instant New York Times bestseller Two spiritual giants. Five days. One timeless question. Nobel Peace Prize Laureates His Holiness the Dalai Lama and Archbishop Desmond Tutu have survived more than fifty years of exile and the soul-crushing violence of oppression. Despite their hardships—or, as they would say, because of them—they are two of the most joyful people on the planet. In April 2015, Archbishop Tutu traveled to the Dalai Lama's home in Dharamsala, India, to celebrate His Holiness's eightieth birthday and to create what they hoped would be a gift for others. They looked back on their long lives to answer a single burning question: How do we find joy in the face of life's inevitable suffering? They traded intimate stories, teased each other continually, and shared their spiritual practices. By the end of a week filled with laughter and punctuated with tears, these two global heroes had stared into the abyss and despair of our time and revealed how to live a life brimming with joy. This book offers us a rare opportunity to experience their astonishing and unprecendented week together, from the first embrace to the final good-bye. We get to listen as they explore the Nature of True Joy and confront each of the Obstacles of Joy—from fear, stress, and anger to grief, illness, and death. They then offer us the Eight Pillars of Joy, which provide the foundation for lasting happiness. Throughout, they include stories, wisdom, and science. Finally, they share their daily Joy Practices that anchor their own emotional and spiritual lives. The Archbishop has never claimed sainthood, and the Dalai Lama considers himself a simple monk. In this unique collaboration, they offer us the reflection of real lives filled with pain and turmoil in the midst of which they have been able to discover a level of peace, of courage, and of joy to which we can all aspire in our own lives.
