Book ULYSSES Modern Classics Series

Download or read book ULYSSES Modern Classics Series written by James Joyce and published by Good Press. This book was released on 2024-01-10 with total page 708 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This carefully crafted ebook: "ULYSSES (Modern Classics Series)" is formatted for your eReader with a functional and detailed table of contents. Ulysses is a modernist novel by Irish writer James Joyce. It is considered to be one of the most important works of modernist literature, and has been called "a demonstration and summation of the entire movement". Ulysses chronicles the peripatetic appointments and encounters of Leopold Bloom in Dublin in the course of an ordinary day, 16 June 1904. Ulysses is the Latinised name of Odysseus, the hero of Homer's epic poem Odyssey, and the novel establishes a series of parallels between its characters and events and those of the poem (the correspondence of Leopold Bloom to Odysseus, Molly Bloom to Penelope, and Stephen Dedalus to Telemachus). Joyce divided Ulysses into 18 chapters or "episodes". At first glance much of the book may appear unstructured and chaotic; Joyce once said that he had "put in so many enigmas and puzzles that it will keep the professors busy for centuries arguing over what I meant", which would earn the novel "immortality". James Joyce (1882-1941) was an Irish novelist and poet, considered to be one of the most influential writers in the modernist avant-garde of the early 20th century. Joyce is best known for Ulysses, the short-story collection Dubliners, and the novels A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man and Finnegans Wake.

Book James Joyce s Teaching Life and Methods

Download or read book James Joyce s Teaching Life and Methods written by Elizabeth Switaj and published by Springer. This book was released on 2016-04-29 with total page 195 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Before Joyce became famous as writer, he supported himself through his other language work: English-language teaching in Pola, Trieste, and Rome. The importance of James Joyce's teaching, however, has been underestimated until now. The very playfulness and unconventionality that made him a popular and successful teacher has led his pedagogy to be underrated, and the connections between his teaching and his writing have been largely neglected. James Joyce's Teaching Life and Methods reveals the importance in A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man, Ulysses, and Finnegans Wake of pedagogy and the understanding of language Joyce gained teaching English as a Foreign Language in Berlitz schools and elsewhere.

Book Joycean Cultures Culturing Joyces

Download or read book Joycean Cultures Culturing Joyces written by Vincent John Cheng and published by University of Delaware Press. This book was released on 1998 with total page 312 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume presents a cultural criticism that analyzes the politics, art, fashion, and constructions of the body inscribed and transcribed in the Joycean text. The essays illustrate the dynamic interaction of art, culture, and criticism. They simultaneously explore the impact that Joyce's own culture, both high and low, had on his art, while assessing Joyce's reciprocal influence on our own contemporary culture. Following the paths of a long and pluralistic tradition of Joyce criticism, the new methodologies in this volume create, or culture, a new Joyce for the nineties.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The essays of this volume show how Joyce’s work engaged with the many upheavals and revolutions within the French nineteenth-century novel and its contexts. The contributors explore Joyce’s explicit and implicit responses to Alexandre Dumas, Honoré de Balzac, Victor Hugo and Émile Zola and, of course, Flaubert. Drawing from the wide range of Joyce’s writings - Dubliners, A Portrait., Ulysses, Finnegans Wake, and his life, letters, and essays - they resituate Joyce’s relation to France, the novel, and the nineteenth century.

Book excerpt: James Joyce and Nationalism comprehensively revises our understanding of Joyce by re-examining his writing against Irish Nationalism. Nolan also brings post-colonial and feminist theories to a close re-reading of Joyce's works. This insightful and challenging work provides a polemical introduction to Joyce and is a much needed contribution to the vast field of Joyce studies. Book Eliot Joyce and Company

Download or read book Eliot Joyce and Company written by Stanley Sultan and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 1987-12-31 with total page 341 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Informed by a writer's view of how a writer works, this perceptive study illuminates the careers of two major figures of twentieth-century literature, T.S. Eliot and James Joyce. Sultan engages in a unique form of historical criticism, blending a literary history of Modernism with a richly intimate knowledge of three key works--"The Love Song of J. Alfred Prufrock," The Waste Land, and Ulysses--and confronting questions of literary theory implicit in the modernist period. In doing so, he examines the antecedents of Modernism, focusing on three major influences--Flaubert, Baudelaire, and Dostoyevsky--and then traces the relations of Eliot and Joyce with their contemporaries, including Virginia Woolf and Wallace Stevens. Concluding with an appraisal of Eliot's and Joyce's impact on readers, writers, and literary theory today, Eliot, Joyce and Company sheds considerable light on the careers of these writers, on their works, and on the history of Modernism.

Download or read book The Beast Within written by Joyce E. Salisbury and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2012-11-12 with total page 216 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Praise for the first edition: "...a brave and fascinating exploration of an area that has so far been rather neglected by both historical and literary critics. The Beast Within provides extremely valuable information on the legal and cultural background of the human-animal relationship..." -- Studies in the Age of Chaucer This important book offers a unique exploration of the use of and attitude towards animals from the 4th to the 14th centuries. The Beast Within explores the varying roles of animals as property, food and sexual objects, and the complex relationship that this created with the people and world around them. Joyce E. Salisbury takes an interdisciplinary approach to the subject, weaving a historical narrative that includes economic, legal, theological, literary and artistic sources. The book shows how by the end of the Middle Ages the lines between humans and animals had blurred completely, making us recognise the beast that lay within us all. This new edition has been brought right up to date with current scholarship, and includes a brand new chapter on animals on trial and animals as human companions, as well as expanded and updated discussions on fables and saints, and a new section on ‘bestial humans’. This important and provocative book remains a key work on the historical study of animals, as well as in the field of environmental history more generally, and also provides crucial context to ongoing debates on animal rights and the environment.

Book Flaubert Joyce and Beckett

Download or read book Flaubert Joyce and Beckett written by Hugh Kenner and published by Dalkey Archive Press. This book was released on 2005 with total page 140 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An enlightening study of three writers, Flaubert, Joyce and Beckett: The Stoic Comedians begins with an explanation of the effect of the printing press on books. The "book as book" has been removed from the oral tradition by such features as prefaces, footnotes, and indexes. Books have become voiceless in some sense--they are to be read silently, not recited aloud. How this mechanical change affected the possibilities of fiction is Kenner's subject. Each of the three featured authors approached this situation in a unique, yet connected way: Flaubert as the "Comedian of the Enlightenment," categorizing man's intellectual follies; Joyce as the "Comedian of the Inventory," with his meticulously constructed lists; and Beckett as the "Comedian of the Impasse," eliminating facts and writing novels about a man alone writing.

Book James Joyce and After

Download or read book James Joyce and After written by Katarzyna Bazarnik and published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing. This book was released on 2010-05-11 with total page 225 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: James Joyce and After: Writer and Time is a volume of essays examining various aspects of time in literature, starting with the modernist revolution in fictional time initiated, among others, by Joyce, up until the present. In Part One: “James Joyce and Commodius Vicus of Recirculation,” the largest group of essays offers new and insightful readings of Finnegans Wake, Ulysses, Dubliners and Pomes Penyeach, reflecting a variety of Joyce’s experiments with time as well as demonstrating patterns and cross-references in his lifelong artistic explorations. Part Two: “Writer and Private Time,” focuses on selected literary responses to subjective experience of time. The articles analyse Joyce’s epiphanies, Elizabeth Bishop’s rendition of a lyrical moment in her poetry, as well as the interplay of fiction and autobiography in the writings of Joseph Conrad and J. M. Coetzee. Another article in this section uses the Bakhtinian concept of chronotope to emphasise simultaneity of reading and writing in the newly defined genre of liberature. At the other end of the (temporal) spectrum, the articles in Part Three: “Writer and Public Time,” devoted to recent fiction, testify to the constant need for seeking new ways of recording the temporal dimension of collective experience. It is argued that the engagement with Victorianism in contemporary fiction has resulted in a special treatment of time involving duality of temporal levels, while the emerging post-9/11 genre takes account of the new audiovisual media in order to respond to one of the most traumatic experiences in contemporary history.

Book James Joyce and the Politics of Desire

Download or read book James Joyce and the Politics of Desire written by Suzette A. Henke and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2015-12-22 with total page 298 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This title, first published in 1990, offers a feminist and psychoanalytic reassessment of the Joycean canon in the wake of Freud, Lacan, and Kristeva. The author centres her discussion of Ulysses, Dubliners, A Portrait of the Artist, Finnegans Wake, and Exiles around questions of desire and language and the politics of sexual difference. Suzette Henke’s radical "re-vision" of Joyce’s work is a striking example of the crucial role feminist theory can play in contemporary evaluation of canonical texts. As such it will be welcomed by feminists and students of literature alike.

Book James Joyce and Catholicism

Download or read book James Joyce and Catholicism written by Chrissie Van Mierlo and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2017-02-23 with total page 237 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: James Joyce and Catholicism is the first historicist study to explore the religious cultural contexts of Joyce's final masterpiece. Drawing on letters, authorial manuscripts and other archival materials, the book works its way through a number of crucial themes; heresy, anticlericalism, Mariology, and others. Along the way, the book considers Joyce's vexed relationship with the Catholic Church he was brought up in, and the unique forms of Catholicism that blossomed in Ireland at the turn of the last century, and during the first years of the Irish Free State.
