Book excerpt: Recognize, confront, and conquer the fears holding you back from living boldly and freely with renowned Bible teacher and New York Times bestselling author, Joyce Meyer. Fear is the devil's favorite tool in the toolbox of schemes he uses to destroy God's good plan for you. He uses it to hold you back and prevent progress in your relationships, career, and more. In Do It Afraid, Joyce Meyer explains that fear is everywhere and affects everyone. It rules many people, but it doesn't have to rule you any longer. She will teach you how to: Understand fear and recognize how it works in your life. Confront those fears that are holding you back. Change your mindset for lasting freedom from some of the most common fears people face. Remember, courage isn't the absence of fear; it is learning how to move forward in the presence of fear. Courageous people do what they believe in their hearts they should do, no matter how they feel or what doubts fill their minds. When you take ownership of your problems and open your heart to God, He will help bring light into darkness so that you can be free.

Book At Home in the World

Download or read book At Home in the World written by Joyce Maynard and published by Picador. This book was released on 2010-04-01 with total page 395 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: New York Times bestselling author of Labor Day With a New Preface When it was first published in 1998, At Home in the World set off a furor in the literary world and beyond. Joyce Maynard's memoir broke a silence concerning her relationship—at age eighteen—with J.D. Salinger, the famously reclusive author of The Catcher in the Rye, then age fifty-three, who had read a story she wrote for The New York Times in her freshman year of college and sent her a letter that changed her life. Reviewers called her book "shameless" and "powerful" and its author was simultaneously reviled and cheered. With what some have viewed as shocking honesty, Maynard explores her coming of age in an alcoholic family, her mother's dream to mold her into a writer, her self-imposed exile from the world of her peers when she left Yale to live with Salinger, and her struggle to reclaim her sense of self in the crushing aftermath of his dismissal of her not long after her nineteenth birthday. A quarter of a century later—having become a writer, survived the end of her marriage and the deaths of her parents, and with an eighteen-year-old daughter of her own—Maynard pays a visit to the man who broke her heart. The story she tells—of the girl she was and the woman she became—is at once devastating, inspiring, and triumphant.

Book The Love Song of Miss Queenie Hennessy

Download or read book The Love Song of Miss Queenie Hennessy written by Rachel Joyce and published by Random House. This book was released on 2015-03-03 with total page 320 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From the New York Times bestselling author of The Unlikely Pilgrimage of Harold Fry comes an exquisite love story about Queenie Hennessy, the remarkable friend who inspired Harold’s cross-country journey. “This lovely book is full of joy. Much more than the story of a woman’s enduring love for an ordinary, flawed man, it’s an ode to messy, imperfect, glorious, unsung humanity.”—The Washington Post A runaway international bestseller, The Unlikely Pilgrimage of Harold Fry followed its unassuming hero on an incredible journey as he traveled the length of England on foot—a journey spurred by a simple letter from his old friend Queenie Hennessy, writing from a hospice to say goodbye. Harold believed that as long as he kept walking, Queenie would live. What he didn’t know was that his decision to walk had caused her both alarm and fear. How could she wait? What would she say? Forced to confront the past, Queenie realizes she must write again. In this poignant parallel story to Harold’s saga, acclaimed author Rachel Joyce brings Queenie Hennessy’s voice into sharp focus. Setting pen to paper, Queenie makes a journey of her own, a journey that is even bigger than Harold’s; one word after another, she promises to confess long-buried truths—about her modest childhood, her studies at Oxford, the heartbreak that brought her to Kingsbridge and to loving Harold, her friendship with his son, the solace she has found in a garden by the sea. And, finally, the devastating secret she has kept from Harold for all these years. A wise, tender, layered novel that gathers tremendous emotional force, The Love Song of Miss Queenie Hennessy underscores the resilience of the human spirit, beautifully illuminating the small yet pivotal moments that can change a person’s life.

Book Joyce Is Not Here

    Book Details:
  • Author : Andrew David Barker
  • Publisher : Createspace Independent Publishing Platform
  • Release : 2017-10-10
  • ISBN : 9781976583940
  • Pages : 148 pages

Download or read book Joyce Is Not Here written by Andrew David Barker and published by Createspace Independent Publishing Platform. This book was released on 2017-10-10 with total page 148 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Where has the sonnet gone? Why don't poets write sonnets today? Fourteen lines, iambic pentameter, ABAB CDCD EFEF GG rhyme scheme, where did it go? Well, poets do write them, but they don't usually publish whole books of them. What would it look like if someone did? What would those poems look like? In Joyce is Not Here: 101 Modern Shakespearean Sonnets Andrew Barker scrupulously applies Shakespeare's favourite poetic form to the modern world to see what the sonnet can capture. Barker mostly eschews the authorial voice in favour of gloriously cynical characters who view their worlds in times of realization and change with a toughness and stoicism that helps them accept their situations. But there is tenderness here too, accessible reminiscences about the influences of music, television, theatre and film, poems where Blair, Trump, Kevin Spacy, Don Draper, Stanley Kowalski and Willie Loman make appearances. Andrew Barker has made Shakespearean sonnets for the modern world. Where has the sonnet gone? The sonnet is here!

Book Joyce s Finnegans Wake

Download or read book Joyce s Finnegans Wake written by John P. Anderson and published by Universal-Publishers. This book was released on 2009-07 with total page 335 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This second volume continues this non-academic author's ground-breaking word-by-word analysis of James Joyce's Finnegans Wake, Joyce's last blessing on mankind. In chapters 1.3 and 1.4, which are covered by this volume, the Kabbalah-based analysis peers into the darkness of the Egyptian Land of the Dead and corresponding Book of the Dead. These chapters are joined at the hip by Egyptian death-obsessed theosophy and increase the font on Joyce s principal subject matter the loss of human potential to fear and dependency. Joyce finds Kabbalah-cursed paralysis in ancient Egyptian religion as part of his effort to show the same paralysis in nearly all religions and to champion the independent individual. In these chapters, the search for meaning in the god/mankind relationship serves up several father and son stories. This selection is based on the fundamental importance in Egyptian religion of the story of father Osiris and son Horus, and the corresponding importance in Christian religion of Jesus as the son of god and the second person in the Trinity. These father and son stories include Attackler and Adversary, a tale framed by a dependency- demanding father god betraying the independent son god on the cross. The story of Abelbody is based on the premise that the real son of the god of this world was the arbitrary and violent Cain. Joyce s masterful synergism of style and content continues. In these two chapters sentences are wrapped up like mummies in parenthesis and parenthesis within parenthesis and slowed down by flow-interrupting dependent clauses. By contrast, the sentences at the end of chapter 1.4 display a new spirit. The unification aspect of the female psyche shows in long and open compound sentences joining many independent elements (much like Molly s soliloquy in Ulysses). In addition, the transition at the end of chapter 1.4 to the female in chapter 1.5 (covered in volume 3) is made by poetry at first doggerel and then dignified poetry. Like the aspect of female mentality that Joyce focuses on, poetry is based on partial connection and unification of the sounds, words and thoughts. Joyce's closing words nurture each other. The author's plan is to cover all of Finnegans Wake in subsequent volumes.
