Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: At the mere mention of the name 'Gelignite' Jack Murray, any Australian from the Baby Boomer era or older can't help but to crack a smile. Murray was best known as the rally driver who in 1954 won the REDEX Round Australia Reliability Trial without the loss of a single point; but Jack's sporting interests and achievements were eclectic and far-ranging. In his own words, at different times throughout his life he was 'engaged in various sports with various successes' cycling; VFL schoolboy football; stock car racing; hill climbing motor races; circuit car racing; car endurance events; Australian and NSW Grand Prix racing; international and Australian rally driving; wrestling; boxing; crocodile, kangaroo and buffalo hunting; ocean boat racing and waterskiing--to name most, but not all. Oh yes--Jack even raced a bathtub once, plug in. Jack Murray died in 1983. Encounters with those who met him, knew him and loved him now grow fewer and fewer, as the years pass and the Reliability Trials of the 1950s drift into Australian history and folklore. Jack's personal and nonpublic life, showing the man behind the derring-do, has never been fully explored or written about.

Book excerpt: Jacks childhood and formative years on the family farm in Scotland during World War II are recounted here. This is followed by an account of Jack and Pats journey from marriage at an early age to retirement, including many poems and stories from events along the way. A keen interest in things mechanical became a passion and a driver for Jack in the fields of construction and commissioning. Various projects and locations are discussed, including working in the Middle East deserts to Alaska and the North Sea, together with the effects on family life. Pivotal moments occur almost in an unplanned way but formed a cohesive picture through time.

Download or read book Once Only the Swallows Were Free written by Gabrielle Gouch and published by Hybrid Publishers. This book was released on 2018-11-01 with total page 321 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Twenty-five years after Gabrielle Gouch left her native land, Transylvania, communism collapsed and the author returned to Romania from Australia to visit her half-brother Tom who told her stories about his life under communism. Though the story is factual, the author uses her strong eye for detail and the techniques of fiction to create this engaging and thought-provoking account about ordinary people in turbulent times. These sad and funny tales are interleaved with the story of the rest of the family from which Tom became estranged. This memoir portrays the exodus of Jewish families from Romania and their arrival in the Promised Land, a dream come true for some but a shock for others. It explores issues of identity, disability, emigration and family relationships against a background of the major political events of the time from a perspective that challenges some accepted views.
