Book The Journeys of a Taymiyyan Sufi

Download or read book The Journeys of a Taymiyyan Sufi written by Arjan Post and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2020-08-25 with total page 337 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Journeys of a Taymiyyan Sufi explores the life and teachings of ʿImād al-Dīn Aḥmad al-Wāsiṭī (d. 711/1311), a little-known Ḥanbalī Sufi master from the circle of Ibn Taymiyya (d. 728/1328). The first part of this book follows al-Wāsiṭī’s physical journey in search of spiritual guidance through a critical study of his autobiographical writings. This provides unique insights into the Rifāʿiyya, the Shādhiliyya, and the school of Ibn ʿArabī, several manifestations of Sufism that he encountered as he travelled from Wāsiṭ to Baghdad, Alexandria, and Cairo. Part I closes with his final destination, Damascus, where his membership of Ibn Taymiyya’s circle and his role as a Sufi teacher is closely examined. The second part focuses on al-Wāsiṭī’s spiritual journey through a study of his Sufi writings, which convey the distinct type of traditionalist Sufism that he taught in early eighth/fourteenth-century Damascus. Besides providing an overview of the spiritual path unto God from beginning to end as he formulated it, this reveals an exceptional interplay between Sufi theory and traditionalist theology.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A Journey Through Ten Thousand Veils is an in-depth account of the journey of the soul on the path of return to its Lord. Sheikha Maryam Kabeer was guided on her journey of profound transformation and illumination to meet and be guided by Awakened Spiritual Masters on the path of awakening, leading to the realization of the deep truth that all lives are interconnected by the Grace and in the Presence of the One Exalted Creator of them all. Born into a liberal Jewish family in Hollywood, she was guided to Berkeley, and then to Afghanistan, India, Nepal, and monasteries in Europe, ultimately to embrace Islam in Hebron (El Khalil), near Jerusalem. In following the example of Abraham (a.s.), Father of all the monotheistic religions, and while praying in the blessed Masjid al Aqsa, in which the spirits of all the Prophets (as) are assembled in eternal prayer and unity, in her spiritual practice, she was guided to penetrate the myth that there must be conflict between the descendants of the great servant of God, who was sent by the Creator, as were all the Prophets (as) to guide humanity to His Path of Truth. This book is a significant and revealing social and spiritual commentary, which dispels, as well, many other myths and stereotypes, such as the proposition that women are oppressed in Islam. On the contrary, it is by entering into the heart of Islam, guided by the Divine Light transmitted through great Spiritual Masters, that she was liberated, elevated, and blessed to serve the Creator and His creation with ever deeper sincerity and illumined faith.Travel with her on her epic journey in order to gain the knowledge that may also set you free.

Download or read book Hajj to the Heart written by Scott Kugle and published by UNC Press Books. This book was released on 2021-12-28 with total page 324 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Against the sweeping backdrop of South Asian history, this is a story of journeys taken by sixteenth-century reformist Muslim scholars and Sufi mystics from India to Arabia. At the center is the influential Sufi scholar Shaykh Ali Muttaqi and his little-known network of disciples. Scott Kugle relates how Ali Muttaqi, an expert in Arabic, scriptural hermeneutics, and hadith, left his native South Asia and traversed treacherous seas to make the Hajj to Mecca. Settling in Mecca, he continued to influence his homeland from overseas. Kugle draws on his original translations of Arabic and Persian manuscripts, never before available in English, to trace Ali Muttaqi's devotional writings, revealing how the Hajj transformed his spiritual life and political loyalties. The story expands across three generations of peripatetic Sufi masters in the Mutaqqi lineage as they travel for purposes of pilgrimage, scholarship, and sometimes simply for survival along Indian Ocean maritime routes linking global Muslim communities. Exploring the political intrigue, scholarly debates, and diverse social milieus that shaped the colorful personalities of his Sufi subjects, Kugle argues for the importance of Indian Sufi thought in the study of hadith and of ethics in Islam. Book excerpt: The Sufis is the best introduction ever written to the philosophical and mystical school traditionally associated with the Islamic world.Powerful, concise, and intensely thought-provoking, it sums up over a thousand years of Eastern thought - the product of some of the greatest minds humanity has ever produced - into a single work, presenting timeless ideas in a fresh and contemporary style. When the book was originally published in 1964, it launched its author, Idries Shah, on to the international stage, attracting the attention of thinkers and writers such as J. D. Salinger, Doris Lessing, Ted Hughes and Robert Graves. It introduced to the Western world concepts which have subsequently become commonly accepted, varying from the psychological importance of attention and humour, to the use of traditional tales as teaching instruments (what Shah termed 'teaching-stories'), and the historical debt owed by the West to the Middle East in matters scientific, literary and philosophical. As a primer for the many dozens of Sufi books that Shah later produced, it is unsurpassed, offering a clear window onto a community whose system of thought and action has long concerned itself with the advancement of the whole of humankind, and whose ideas about individuals and society, their purpose and direction, need to be understood now more than ever before.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Within the Heart of Hearts is a journey into the mystical secrets of the heart. Designed to be read like a medieval book of hours, it uses prose, poetry, and images as a series of meditations on the stages of love's mystical journey, from the initial experience of searching and the heart's longing, to the ecstatic union with God, the lover united with the Beloved. This simple but powerful description of the Sufi journey reminds us of this living tradition of divine love. Beautiful images speak directly to the soul, as do the poems that touch the heart. Here is the poetry of Rumi, Hafiz, Ibn 'Arabi, and other Sufi masters placed within the context of the stages of the heart's opening to God. Speaking the universal language of love, they allow each of us to feel the mystery, wonder, and bliss that belongs to the heart of hearts, the mystical secret that is hidden within us. They draw us deep within our own heart, where this intoxicating relationship of lover and Beloved takes place. The popularity of Rumi has shown a thirst in the West for mystical love. This small book is a way to drink deeply of this wine of love, this tradition of lovers of God. Written by a contemporary Sufi, Within the Heart of Hearts is based upon a lived experience of the Sufi path and the inner experiences of the heart. "... a gentle and uplifting introduction to the mystical ground of being, weaving the voices of legendary Sufi poets such as Rumi, Hafiz, Rabi'a, Ghalib, Abu Sa'id, and Nizami. Reading this book is like sitting in a circle of ancient pilgrims as they share their inner journeys on a mountain at sunrise." —MARK NEPO, author, The Endless Practice and The Book of Awakening "Llewellyn Vaughan-Lee has a gift. He dives into the deep ocean of classical Sufi teachings, and comes up again and again with pearls of beauty that speak to our hearts today. This is more than merely translating, it is that rare ability to re-present teachings here and now. Recommended for spiritual seekers who are drawn to the path of Divine love." —Prof OMID SAFI, Ph.D, Director of Duke University's Islamic Studies Center; international speaker appearing on PBS, NPR, NBC, CNN, The New York Times, Newsweek, the Washington Post, and other international media; and author of Radical Love: Teachings from the Islamic Mystical Tradition "... a crucible for transformation ...The poems Llewellyn Vaughan-Lee has gathered here, activated by his own distilled reflections, and illumined by Anat Vaughan-Lee's luminous images, have the power to awaken the heart's deepest longing and simultaneously meet the heart's highest hopes for union with the Beloved. I wept my way through this encounter, and I am not the same." —MIRABAI STARR, translator of John of the Cross and Teresa of Avila, and author, God of Love: A Guide to the Heart of Judaism, Christianity & Islam

Book excerpt: "The Mirror and the Staircase" is a captivating collection of Sufi tales, each story unveiling the depths of spiritual and mystical wisdom. This book guides us through the teachings and metaphors of Sufi masters, illustrating the principles of soul purification and spiritual ascent. Sufi tales are more than mere stories; they are mirrors reflecting the profound truths of our existence and staircases leading to spiritual realization. In this collection, each story invites us to explore our own soul, understand our desires and fears, and find inner peace. In the first story, we follow the journey of Rahim, a young man in search of truth, who meets Sheikh Hakim. The Sufi master reveals that the mirror represents his soul, reflecting his thoughts and emotions. Through meditations and teachings, Rahim learns to purify his heart and see divine truth. In another story, Rahim is guided by Sheikh Hakim to an ancient stone staircase, symbolizing the spiritual path. Each step represents a challenge to overcome, a stage in the elevation of the soul towards divine truth. This powerful metaphor teaches us that faith, prayer, and perseverance are the keys to spiritual ascension. The tales are interspersed with inspiring quotes from the Quran and Sufi proverbs, enriching the narratives and offering profound reflections: *"He who knows himself knows his Lord."* - Sufi Proverb *"Do not weaken, and do not grieve, and you will be superior if you are believers."* (Quran 3:139) These words invite readers to meditate on their own spiritual journey and find answers in ancient wisdom. Each tale is a step in the soul's transformative journey. The characters, faced with their fears and desires, discover the power of forgiveness, love, compassion, and faith. The stories of Rahim, Leila, Hassan, and others illustrate that life's trials are opportunities for spiritual growth. "The Mirror and the Staircase" is more than just a collection of tales. It is an open door to the eternal wisdom of Sufism, an invitation to discover divine truth within oneself and ascend the steps of spiritual growth. Let these stories inspire you and find inner peace and light in every word. *"Indeed, with hardship comes ease."* (Quran 94:6) Dive into *"The Mirror and the Staircase"* and begin your own quest for truth and wisdom.

Download or read book Love is a Fire written by Llewellyn Vaughan-Lee and published by The Golden Sufi Center. This book was released on 2001-07-15 with total page 246 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Based on live talks and meetings with Llewellyn Vaughan-Lee, this is an introduction to the passion and wisdom of the Sufi path of love. The call of the heart and how it draws us back to divine union is one of mankind's greatest secrets, and for the Sufi, this love is a fire that burns away all traces of separation. Vaughan-Lee teaches how to live this burning and describes stages of the path of love on the soul's journey home. Love Is a Fire includes descriptions of the "friends of God," early Sufi saints who burned with the fire of divine love, including Rumi, Ibn 'Arabi, and Rabi'a. It also introduces elements of the path and important tools that purify the wayfarer: tauba, the moment of the turning of the heart when the soul remembers its divine origin; dhikr, the central Sufi practice of remembrance of God through repetition of the name of God or a sacred phrase; meditation, a way of drowning thoughts in the fire of love; and dreamwork, a way of listening and attuning to the mystery of what is hidden within us—the stories of our deeper selves. This book is also available as an audio recording, Love is a Fire and I am Wood, published by Sounds True. “... forged in the fire of the heart, this is a book for all those who are looking for the direct way to connection with the Eternal Now. Simply to read this fine expression of a lifetime's longing is to feel aligned with the Divine Ground.” —Anne Baring, coauthor, The Divine Feminine “... a gift to all seekers, whatever path they are on.” —Andrew Harvey, author, Light Upon Light: A Celebration of Rumi
