The discerning reader will enjoy the richness and variety of Joseph's legacy as seen through the eyes of the writers, who bear the title Josephite and who generously share their knowledge, experience, reflection and prayer of this saint, whom Julian Tenison Woods calls 'the Prince of God's House who was among the poorest of men and hidden with Mary and Jesus' (4 September, 1887). When Mary MacKillop and Julian Woods were establishing a new religious group in Australia, why did they turn to Joseph as their identity-marker? Human aspirations, Gospel verses, and ancient legends all met to sow the seeds that would flourish in this soil, and be known with respect and gratitude as "the Joeys." Professor Mary Coloe, pbvm. Book excerpt: We tend to look for a "secret formula" for success in the kingdom, but there is only a journey. God advances His purposes through people that He forms by His processes. One of those people was Joseph. He was sent out ahead of the activity of God in his generation so that he could lead others in an hour of transition. He was fashioned for a leadership assignment that he could not yet see. God tested and formed him in pits and prisons so that he could stand in the palace of the king. His journey is a prototype of how God prepares pioneers for seasons of global transition. Right now, we are standing on the shore, watching the tidal waves of great revival, great harvest, and great trouble unlike the earth has ever seen, swell on the horizon. God is interviewing men and women for assignments that will span the next twenty and thirty years to prepare the Church for what is coming. Odds are, you are in that interview process right now! In this book, R.A. Martinez walks through the seven seasons of Joseph's life that God used to form him into a pioneer who could carry the weight of the dream fulfilled. Each season on The Joseph Journey is designed with divine purpose, including lessons and tests, to prepare you to carry out God-sized assignments in the days ahead!

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Drawing on vivid oral histories, Joseph M. Marshall’s intimate biography introduces a never-before-seen portrait of Crazy Horse and his Lakota community Most of the world remembers Crazy Horse as a peerless warrior who brought the U.S. Army to its knees at the Battle of Little Bighorn. But to his fellow Lakota Indians, he was a dutiful son and humble fighting man who—with valor, spirit, respect, and unparalleled leadership—fought for his people’s land, livelihood, and honor. In this fascinating biography, Joseph M. Marshall, himself a Lakota Indian, creates a vibrant portrait of the man, his times, and his legacy. Thanks to firsthand research and his culture’s rich oral tradition (rarely shared outside the Native American community), Marshall reveals many aspects of Crazy Horse’s life, including details of the powerful vision that convinced him of his duty to help preserve the Lakota homeland—a vision that changed the course of Crazy Horse’s life and spurred him confidently into battle time and time again. The Journey of Crazy Horse is the true story of how one man’s fight for his people’s survival roused his true genius as a strategist, commander, and trusted leader. And it is an unforgettable portrayal of a revered human being and a profound celebration of a culture, a community, and an enduring way of life. "Those wishing to understand Crazy Horse as the Lakota know him won't find a better accout than Marshall's." -San Francisco Chronicle

Download or read book Befriending St Joseph written by Deacon Greg Kandra and published by Ave Maria Press. This book was released on 2022-04-08 with total page 128 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: After Pope Francis declared 2020 the year of St. Joseph, interest in the patriarch of the Holy Family and patron of the Universal Church was heightened worldwide. In Befriending St. Joseph, popular blogger Deacon Greg Kandra leads you on a journey of imaginative exploration and spiritual renewal rooted in the few Bible stories where Joseph is written about. This book offers a fresh take on the centuries-old devotion known as the Seven Sorrows of St. Joseph and provides an opportunity to ponder Joseph's role in our salvation and to become more like him. Although the Bible doesn't record St. Joseph saying a single word, we know he became what God wanted him to be with patience, attention, trust, and prayer. The biblical account of Jesus's life shows us that St. Joseph had faith in times of uncertainty and courage in times of danger. Kandra shows us Joseph as a gentle man, pure of heart, trusting in God, and a role model for those who feel unworthy or unready. Through guided reflections, Kandra helps you imagine what life may have been like for Joseph, Mary, and Jesus and offers guidance to help you better navigate your own life, with particular attention to trust, purity of heart, courage, and persistence in faith. Kandra invites you to: trust the mystery of God when life seems shattered; persist in caring for those you love, guide, and protect; be courageous and compassionate in the face of suffering; find strength to comfort others; attend to those on the margins; pray for the grace of endurance; and expect to find Christ in unexpected places. Each chapter of Befriending St. Joseph includes a scriptural verse about Joseph that lies at the heart of the devotion, original prayers by Kandra, and questions for self-reflection, journaling, or faith sharing. The appendixes include additional prayers to St. Joseph and an adaption of the Seven Sorrows devotion for group prayer.
Download or read book The Spiritual Journey of Joseph L Greenstein written by Ed Spielman and published by . This book was released on 1998 with total page 260 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: So many of our fictional heroes, from Tarzan to James Bond, are variations on the superman theme. Here is the true story of a man who realized that myth: Joseph Greenstein, The Mighty Atom. He was a modern-day Samson who could stop bullets and hold back roaring airplanes, a man who rose from the Jewish ghettos of Poland to become the most remarkable strongman of the century. The Spiritual Journey of Joseph L. Greenstein, World's Strongest Man is a fully-documented and illustrated biography that also details the methods Greenstein used to train himself for the impossible. As a vaudeville star, he bit through iron bars, crushed steel spikes in his hands, and held back airplanes tied to his hair. These feats were all the more amazing because he stood only five feet four inches and weighed in at just 145 pounds. But The Mighty Atom had developed his own technique for tapping into the life-force; a technique that encompassed Asian methods of concentration, Jewish mystical writings, and a then-unheard-of vegetarian natural diet. He unlearned the subconscious mechanism that forces us to stop when we think we have reached our physical limits. Each time he broke an iron chain, he revealed the enormous potential of the life-force. That potential exists inside every one of us and, as The Mighty Atom showed, it is within our grasp.

Download or read book Taxi written by Joseph Rodriguez and published by powerHouse Books. This book was released on 2020-12-22 with total page 132 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: New York City in the late '70s was a collection of villages with its downtown scene, midtown workers, and uptown elegance. It was also a city that was more integrated than ever before or ever would be again. All of the city's humanity met in its streets with layered soundtracks of salsa, rock, disco, reggae, and soon hip-hop booming for all to groove to. But, NYC was also a place of chaos and mayhem. Teetering on the brink of bankruptcy with rampant crime it was the city's drug users, dealers, and pimps and prostitutes who ruled the streets of Manhattan. The grittiness of the city was a beacon and a promise to many outsiders, those who didn't quite fit into any mold, and a vibrant LGBTQ community became the nexus of an underworld of sex workers who liked to party. For a NYC cabbie such as Joseph Rodriguez, the hot spots to pick up fares were clubs like the Hellfire, Mineshaft, The Anvil, The Vault, and Show World. Losing his first camera and lens in a classic '70s New York stabbing and mugging, Rodriguez's wounds healed and he armed himself with a new camera to document what he saw on the job: hookers getting off their shifts, transvestites and S&M partiers doin' it in the back seat or somehow pulling off an unlikely costume change from bondage gear to emerge from the cab clean-cut in an oxford and khakis ready to face unwitting family and friends. A humanist at heart, his photographs speak of the dignity of the city's working class from all the boroughs and those struggling to get by. The Economic Hardship Reporting Project provided funding to support Taxi: Journey Through My Windows 1977–1987.
