Book excerpt: Mr. Phileas Fogg lived, in 1872, at No. 7, Saville Row, Burlington Gardens, the house in which Sheridan died in 1814. He was one of the most noticeable members of the Reform Club, though he seemed always to avoid attracting attention; an enigmatical personage, about whom little was known, except that he was a polished man of the world. People said that he resembled Byron-at least that his head was Byronic; but he was a bearded, tranquil Byron, who might live on a thousand years without growing old.

Book A Journey to the Centre of the Earth

Download or read book A Journey to the Centre of the Earth written by Jules Verne and published by epubli. This book was released on 2018-07-28 with total page 302 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Journey to the Center of the Earth" (French: "Voyage au centre de la Terre", also translated under the titles "A Journey to the Centre of the Earth" and "A Journey to the Interior of the Earth") is a classic 1864 science fiction novel by Jules Verne. The story involves German professor Otto Lidenbrock who believes there are volcanic tubes going toward the centre of the Earth. He, his nephew Axel, and their guide Hans descend into the Icelandic volcano Snæfellsjökull, encountering many adventures, including prehistoric animals and natural hazards, before eventually coming to the surface again in southern Italy, at the Stromboli volcano. From a scientific point of view, this story has not aged quite as well as other Verne stories, since most of his ideas about what the interior of the Earth contains have since been disproved, but it still manages to captivate audiences when regarded as a classic fantasy novel.
