Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "One of the best storytellers who ever lived."--Arthur C. Clarke In one dazzling decade, French novelist Jules Verne took readers places they'd never gone before. . .the age of dinosaurs. . .the undersea realm of Atlantis. . .the craters and crevices of the moon. . .and a whirlwind aerial tour of the planet earth! Though he penned his unforgettable yarns in French, Verne plunked big parts of them down in America. And he himself possessed an American sassiness, nerve, and sense of humor, so Americans have returned the compliment: we've released dozens of Hollywood films based on his astonishing tales, and we've created the U.S.S. Nautilus, the NASA space missions, and other technological triumphs that have turned Verne's visions into practical reality. Here are Jules Verne's best-loved novels in one convenient omnibus volume, but with a huge difference. This book features new, accurate, accessible, and unabridged translations of these five visionary classics, translations that are complete down to the smallest substantive detail, that showcase Verne's farseeing science with unprecedented clarity and accuracy, capture the wit, prankishness, and showbiz flamboyance of one of literature's leading humorists and satirists. This is a Verne almost completely unknown to Americans. . .yet a Verne who has an uncannily American mindset! So these heroes and happenings are part of our heritage: Phileas Fogg chugging across the wild, wild west. . .the impossible underground journey of Professor Lidenbrock. . . the deep-sea exploits of secretive Captain Nemo. . .and a moon shot so realistic, it inspired U.S. astronaut Frank Borman a full century later. Jules Verne was a science buff with a showbiz background, and finally these classic storiess have a translator with the same orientation: Frederick Paul Walter is one of America's foremost Verne scholars. . . But he's also a scriptwriter, broadcaster, and part-time fossil hunter! Enriched with dozens of classic illustrations, The Amazing Journeys of Jules Verne will be a family favorite in every home library. Jules Verne was born in 1828 into a French lawyering family in the Atlantic coastal city of Nantes. Though his father sent him off to a Paris law school, young Jules had been writing on the side since his early teens, and his pet topics were the theater, travel, and science. Predictably enough, his legal studies led nowhere, so Verne took a day job with a stock brokerage, in his off hours penning scripts for farces and musical comedies while also publishing short stories and novelettes of scientific exploration and adventure. His big breakthrough came when he combined his theatrical knack with his scientific bent and in 1863 published an African adventure yarn, Five Weeks in a Balloon. After that and till his death in 1905, Jules Verne was one of the planet's best-loved and best-selling novelists, publishing over sixty books. In addition to the five visionary classics in this volume, other imaginative favorites by him include The Mysterious Island, Hector Servadac, the Begum's Millions, Master of the World, and The Meteor Hunt. Verne ranks among the five most translated authors in history, along with Mark Twain and the Bible .Frederick Paul Walter is a scriptwriter, broadcaster, librarian, and amateur paleontologist. A Trustee of the North American Jules Verne Society, he served as its Vice President from 2000 to 20008. Walter has produced many media programs, articles, reviews, and papers on aspects of Jules Verne and has collaborated on translations and scholarly editions of three Verne novels: The Meteor Hunt, The Mighty Orinoco, and a special edition of 20,000 Leagues Under the Seas for the U.S. Naval Institute in Annapolis. Known to friends as Rick Walter, he lives in Albuquerque, New Mexico.

Book Journey to the End of the Night

Download or read book Journey to the End of the Night written by Louis-Ferdinand Céline and published by Calder Publications Limited. This book was released on 1988 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When it was published in 1932, this revolutionary first fiction redefined the art of the novel with its black humor, its nihilism, and its irreverent, explosive writing style, and made Louis-Ferdinand Celine one of France's--and literature's--most important 20th-century writers. The picaresque adventures of Bardamu, the sarcastic and brilliant antihero of Journey to the End of the Night move from the battlefields of World War I (complete with buffoonish officers and cowardly soldiers), to French West Africa, the United States, and back to France in a style of prose that's lyrical, hallucinatory, and hilariously scathing toward nearly everybody and everything. Yet, beneath it all one can detect a gentle core of idealism.

This book was released on 2019-05-17 with total page 440 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Penn Museum has a long and storied history of research and archaeological exploration in the ancient Middle East. This book highlights this rich depth of knowledge while also serving as a companion volume to the Museum's signature Middle East Galleries opening in April 2018. This edited volume includes chapters and integrated short, focused pieces from Museum curators and staff actively involved in the detailed planning of the new galleries. In addition to highlighting the most remarkable and interesting objects in the Museum's extraordinary Middle East collections, this volume illuminates the primary themes within these galleries (make, settle, connect, organize, and believe) and provides a larger context within which to understand them. The ancient Middle East is home to the first urban settlements in human history, dating to the fourth millennium BCE; therefore, tracing this move toward city life figures prominently in the book. The topic of urbanization, how it came about and how these early steps still impact our daily lives, is explored from regional and localized perspectives, bringing us from Mesopotamia (Ur, Uruk, and Nippur) to Islamic and Persianate cites (Rayy and Isfahan) and, finally, connecting back to life in modern Philadelphia. Through examination of topics such as landscape, resources, trade, religious belief and burial practices, daily life, and nomads, this very important human journey is investigated both broadly and with specific case studies.

Book Journey to the People s Republic of China Review Analysis

Download or read book Journey to the People s Republic of China Review Analysis written by Kalman Dubov and published by Kalman Dubov. This book was released on with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: On a Holland America Grand Voyage aboard the flagship Amsterdam, I had the great fortune of visiting the ancient land of China, now known as the People's Republic of China. This visit enabled me to, for the first time, to walk part of the way of the Great Wall, visit the Old Summer Palace and see Tien An Men Square and the Forbidden City. Besides visiting the capital city, the ship also visited Shanghai and Hong Kong. China is a huge country whose history goes back millennia. The places we visited provided but a glimpse of that history and its current politics. In this volume, I review China's ancient history, with an overview of the many dynasties that made China great. For many years, China stood at the forefront of technological and scientific discovery, known today as the Four Great Discoveries - the compass, making paper, gunpowder, and printing. Each of these transformed the world, in its own way. Yet, the advancement of science and technology did not stay in China. The great conundrum today is exploring the reasons China lost its ability to stand at the helm of such advancement. I explore this issue while reviewing the complexities of how China lived, both in its dynastic and modern periods. Ancient China had civil service examinations as a method to identify the best and brightest minds and then to employ them for service to the emperor. Jinshi, the highest and most difficult examination was so complicated, the successful candidates' name was inscribed on stone, then selected to remain in Beijing in service to the emperor. Such examinations later migrated to other countries in the Far East, then to the West, where it is in common use today. China and its millennium-long history reflect an ancient people who today seek to assert their presence and power on the world stage. Prior to its current form of government, it was forced to capitulate to Western colonial powers. Revolts by the Chinese against such foreign intervention resulted in the Opium Wars, the loss of Hong Kong, and the destruction of its Old Summer Palace. I explore China's bitter past, together with its current belligerence on the world stage as it seeks to redevelop and transform itself, from the ancient Silk Road into the modern OBOR - One Belt; One Road with dramatic effect on many peoples and nations. I also noted the conundrum of seeing tall high-rise clusters of apartment buildings, structures that could house thousands of people, but stand completely empty. Passing these buildings at night was eerie; not a single light or human is visible anywhere. The claim of a surging China, at least in the places I visited, made me wonder if the building boom the media and economists claim is but a bubble, soon to evaporate in the glare of inquiry and reality. Nonetheless, this visit was dramatic in its own way, offering many varieties of the different strata of this complex society. During this visit, I explored the Jewish community, first in Shanghai, then in Hong Kong. Several Jewish passengers joined to attend the Sabbath Service at the Chabad House. We were warmly welcomed and saw a robust community in this remote part of the world. In Hong Kong, we visited several synagogues, noting the pride and activity present in these communities. I explore the history of the Jewish community in these centers, with a special interest in the Jewish ‘Ghetto’ of Shanghai where thousands of European Jews were sheltered during the Nazi’s Final Solution. They were given refuge in Shanghai, and the area they lived in is still visible by way of a museum and plaques indicating where they lived and survived the war years. The enormity of China demands a multi-volume effort to do justice to its geography and history. This is but a small contribution of this ancient land.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Exile! A seemingly meaningless crime can have serious consequences, even in the island kingdom of Caladen, where crime is virtually unknown. The life of eighteen year old Arden is dramatically changed as he must journey to find the King of Kings and seek His judgment. Leaving his parents and Sarah, the girl he loves, Arden must travel across the sea to the "strange lands" only spoken of in stories - where good and evil wage war for the hearts and minds of the people. An evil queen lives there and false prophets preach to the people. However, the Lord Most High has not been forgotten and a great battle that occurred over a thousand years ago still shapes the present. Far away in the land of Jeshuryn is the City of Light, home to the King of Kings. The princess Ariana lives there, unaware that she has a role in this journey. The adventure is not without danger, but Arden finds unexpected help from legends on his journey to find the King of Kings. Journey to the King of Kings Book I: Exile is Dennis Redline's first venture into the Christian fiction arena. A native of Connecticut, he is actively involved in his church and currently working in sound ministry. In 2000 he served as a volunteer in Kentucky for 16 months, and subsequently has been on mission trips to Ukraine, and most recently Honduras. Additionally, he has travelled throughout the United States and explored some of Scotland and London. He has also been involved in inter-denominational teen ministry for many years and has geared this book for teens believing that adults will enjoy it as well. Another passion of his is hiking and for the past several years he has walked many trails with this book on his mind.
