There they encounter an ancient landscape filled with prehistoric animals and natural dangers. There is some discussion as to whether Verne really believed that such things might be found in the center, or whether he shared the alternate view, expressed by another character in the novel, that it was not so. As part of our mission to publish great works of literary fiction and nonfiction, Sheba Blake Publishing Corp. is extremely dedicated to bringing to the forefront the amazing works of long dead and truly talented authors.

Book excerpt: One hundred fifty years later, Jules Verne’s epic novel of science and adventure is just as thrilling as when it was first published A dirty slip of parchment falls from the pages of an ancient manuscript. Deciphered by the indefatigable Otto Liedenbrock, professor of geology, and his reluctant nephew, Axel, the parchment’s coded message is a wild assertion made by a medieval alchemist: Inside a volcano in Iceland is a passageway to the center of the earth. Impossible, says Axel—the temperature of the earth’s core is far too high for any human being to go near it. That is one theory, the professor replies. Two days later, they embark on a journey so fantastic it will alter the very meaning of history. First published in 1864, Journey to the Center of the Earth is a cornerstone of science fiction and one of the greatest stories ever told. This ebook edition contains the classic Ward Lock & Co. translation of 1877, one of the first English-language versions faithful to the original French. This ebook has been professionally proofread to ensure accuracy and readability on all devices.

Jules Verne’s classic science fiction novel, Journey to the Center of the Earth, takes readers deep below the world’s surface and inside the author’s inventive, visionary mind. The story revolves around Professor Otto Lidenbrock, an eccentric German scientist who decodes the cryptic notes of a famous medieval scholar, discovering a map which describes a method to access a tunnel leading directly to the earth’s core. The adventurous geology professor can’t resist the opportunity to investigate, and persuades his sixteen-year-old nephew Axel to travel with him on the most remarkable human quest ever taken. Epitomizing the subterranean fiction genre, one of the best storytellers who ever lived, Verne takes readers on an incredible journey through a prehistoric world incorporating well-researched Victorian science with some of literature’s most unforgettable characters. They set off across Iceland with Hans Bjelke, a native Icelandic guide and descend into Snæfellsjökull, Iceland's famous dormant volcano. As they travel down into the unexplored, subterranean world beneath their feet, they discover that there is more to life than what is on the surface of the earth as they contend with many unexpected dangers. After facing cave-ins, subpolar tornadoes, prehistoric creatures, a vast subterranean ocean, and a living past that holds the secrets to the origins of human existence, they are eventually shot back to the surface by Stromboli, an active Italian volcano. JULES VERNE (1828 –1905) was a French novelist, poet, and playwright. His adventure novels include Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Sea and Around the World in Eighty Days.

Book excerpt: Journey to the Center of the Earth1871 Journey to the Center of the Earth (French: Voyage au centre de la Terre, also translated under the titles A Journey to the Centre of the Earth and A Journey to the Interior of the Earth) is an 1864 science fiction novel by Jules Verne. The story involves German professor Otto Lidenbrock who believes there are volcanic tubes going toward the centre of the Earth. He, his nephew Axel, and their guide Hans descend into the Icelandic volcano Snæfellsjökull, encountering many adventures, including prehistoric animals and natural hazards, before eventually coming to the surface again in southern Italy, at the Stromboli volcano. The genre of subterranean fiction already existed long before Verne. However, Journey considerably added to the genre's popularity and influenced later such writings. For example, Edgar Rice Burroughs explicitly acknowledged Verne's influence on his own Pellucidar series. The story begins in May 1863, in the Lidenbrock house in Hamburg, Germany, with Professor Lidenbrock rushing home to peruse his latest purchase, an original runic manuscript of an Icelandic saga written by Snorri Sturluson (Snorre Tarleson in some versions of the story), "Heimskringla" the chronicle of the Norwegian kings who ruled over Iceland. While looking through the book, Lidenbrock and his nephew Axel find a coded note written in runic script along with the name of a 16th-century Icelandic alchemist, Arne Saknussemm. (This was a first indication of Verne's love for cryptography. Coded, cryptic, or incomplete messages as a plot device would continue to appear in many of his works and in each case Verne would go a long way to explain not only the code used but also the mechanisms used to retrieve the original text.) Lidenbrock and Axel transliterate the runic characters into Latin letters, revealing a message written in a seemingly bizarre code. Lidenbrock attempts a decipherment, deducing the message to be a kind of transposition cipher but his results are as meaningless as the original.Professor Lidenbrock decides to lock everyone in the house and force himself and the others (Axel, and the maid, Martha) to go without food until he cracks the code. Axel discovers the answer when fanning himself with the deciphered text: Lidenbrock's decipherment was correct, and only needs to be read backwards to reveal sentences written in rough Latin.
