Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Donovan Webster brings his vivid journalistic gifts to a new subject, tracing our deep genealogy using cutting-edge DNA research to map our eons-old journey from prehistoric Africa into the modern world. With the same genetic haplotype as many white American males, Webster makes an ideal subject—he is a genuine Everyman. While his voice and spirit are unique to him, in exploring his own ancestry, he shows us our own. Drawing on National Geographic’s Genographic Project, the largest anthropologic DNA study of its kind, Webster traces centuries of migrations, everywhere finding members of his now far-flung genetic family. In Tanzania’s Rift Valley, he hunts with Julius, whose tribe speaks a click language, and wanders the ruins of ancient Mesopotamia with Mohamed and Khalid, now Jordanian citizens. In Samarkand, Uzbekistan, eastern frontier of his ancestral roaming, a circus ringmaster becomes both friend and link to his primal bloodline. Webster’s genographic quest leads him to contemplate what traits he shares with those he meets, and considers what they and their ways of life reveal about the deep history of our species. A lifetime of journalistic travels among a wide range of cultures furnish Webster with a wealth of colorful threads to weave into a story as particularly personal as it is universally human.

Book excerpt: Journey Genealogies: Hart, Cunningham, Hanney, Feeney, Mackey & Mahoney, a companion volume for Journey ¿ An Irish-American Odyssey, focuses on the Irish and American descendants of the six prominently-featured families in that work.In the nineteenth century, immigration became a way of life for the Irish. While some in these six families remained in their ancestral counties of Sligo, Tipperary and Limerick, many immigrated to America, where they established new communities at Boston and Newton, Mass., New York City and Rochester, N.Y., Pittsburgh, Penn., and Chicago, Ill. Subsequent generations migrated westward in search of new and better opportunities. Over time, family connections faded from memory and for many their Irish culture and heritage was lost. The well-documented and interrelated genealogies presented in Journey Genealogies trace the descendants of the Hart, Cunningham, Hanney, Feeney, Mackey and Mahoney families from their earliest known Irish origins into the twentieth century. Within these pages are people who share a wonderfully rich Irish heritage waiting to be rediscovered.

This notable work poignantly explains how a tool of family history—gathering the genogram, or a basic family tree—can help us to better understand and mend family relationships and dynamics. Here, fully updated for the first time, Monica McGoldrick's book elaborates on the ways in which genograms can reveal a family's history of estrangement, alliance, divorce, or suicide, exposing intergenerational patterns that prove more than coincidental. Weaving together photographs and genograms of famous families—including the Kennedys, the Freuds, and the Fondas—she sheds light on a range of complex issues such as birth order and sibling rivalry, family myths and secrets, cultural differences, couple relationships, and the pivotal role of loss. In this important work, readers learn to mine previously untapped information about their own family patterns, leading to a reconnection to home and a deeper sense of identity. Book One Family s Journey Through Time Revisited

Download or read book One Family s Journey Through Time Revisited written by R. G. Tidwell and published by Bluewater Publishing. This book was released on 2012-06-01 with total page 288 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The author's first book, One Family's Journey through Time, was written as a compilation of the genealogical research of Richard Tidwell's family line as well as Jerry Tidwell's family life memories from childhood to adulthood and the treasured stories he heard while growing up. The information in the book was primarily about his grandfather, Nathan Jerry Tidwell, and his immediate family. The book did not contain information about extended family because the author did not know much about his great uncles and their family lines. He wasn't even sure who to contact to obtain this information. After the release of Our Family's Journey through Time, family members came forth and offered to share their family stories. This allowed Mr. Tidwell to revisit his first work and include more detailed genealogy and many more stories and photographs. Our Family's Journey through Time Revisited includes over 170 pages of new information and numerous new photographs. The author is not an author in the conventional sense of the word in this work but more of a compiler. He simply gathered everyone's stories and updates, compiled them and had them published. The early family history from Richard Tidwell who emigrated from England to Virginia in 1650 as an indentured servant through the Virginia history of the early Tidwells and Reuben Tidwell who settled in Warren County, Tennessee is retained in this work. This book updates the families of Reuben's son Robert Tidwell through Robert's sons Richard T. Tidwell and John D. Tidwell. This book brings this branch of the family up to date to the latest marriages, births and deaths as of June of 2012.

Book A Journey Through My Family

Download or read book A Journey Through My Family written by Jane Wellesley and published by Orion. This book was released on 2009 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A charmingly personal, anecdotal family memoir of the Wellington legacy. 'Arthur Wellesley, the First Duke of Wellington, is at his desk writing letters. It is Sunday, 18 June 1815; the place is Waterloo...' Jane Wellesley is a descendent of the First Duke of Wellington whose victory at Waterloo is celebrated as one of our nation's greatest triumphs. But while little remains unknown about the 'Iron Duke', Jane's family memoir paints an intimate and compelling portrait of his dynasty. From the Belgian battlefield with her father, the current 8th Duke, Jane journeys through the past, unearthing memories, secrets and stories to illuminate her family tree. What unfolds is a saga peppered with fascinating characters: the 2nd Duke was a full-time eccentric and had his lawnmower pulled by an elephant; the 6th Duke's playboy lifestyle often led to trouble; 7th Duke, Gerald, worked for MI6; and Jane's grandmother ran off with writer Vita Sackville-West. The Wellesley story shows how Wellington's descendents lived on in the light of their ancestor's fame, and how a family is so much more than the history of one man.

Book excerpt: In "Got Proof! My Genealogical Journey Through the Use of Documentation," Lieutenant Commander Michael Nolden Henderson, U.S. Navy retired, captures the attention of genealogists, historians, and others interested in the complex social structure that developed during the French and Spanish colonial periods in Louisiana. He explores forbidden relationships that spawned the unique heritage of Creoles of color. Referencing documents from as far back as the 1770s, Henderson uses his own experiences as a family history researcher and the insight of notes scholars to reveal the methods, standards, and techniques used to prove his ancestry. Part of the story of his ancestors was captured in a 2010 segment of the PBS series, "History Detectives" titled "The Galvez Papers," in which Henderson is featured. Additionally, his efforts led to him becoming the first African American in Georgia to be inducted into the National Society, Sons of the American Revolution in 2010. He has served as vice president and president of his chapter, and, as of this writing, remains Georgia's only African American member.
