D., Of Mendip Lodge, Somerset, Vol. 2 of 2: Edited, With a Memoir and Illustrative Notes My bookseller informed me, soon after the delivery of the books according to your direction, that the Milk-woman's Poems were not to be had at that period, being out of print. My opinion is in general yours upon that brilliant mischief, the Essay on Old Maids, at least in point of morality and generosity, both which I think it lamentably violates; but in ability I set it higher than you seem to do - indeed I think it has the wit and spirit of Voltaire's most brilliant compositions; and I find the pathos of Sterne in several of the beautiful little stories of the first volume. I shed rivers of tears over the history of poor Constantia, and her lacerated feelings. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Anna Seward s Journal and Sermons

Download or read book Anna Seward s Journal and Sermons written by Teresa Barnard and published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing. This book was released on 2017-08-21 with total page 245 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Anna Seward, eighteenth-century poet, biographer, and letter-writer, wrote her juvenile journal in the form of a series of letters to an imaginary friend, “Emma”. Seward intended the letters as an autobiographical account of the period of her youth before she achieved fame as a published poet. Towards the end of her life, she collated her works for posthumous publication, bequeathing the manuscripts to Walter Scott. However, as Scott disliked much of the anecdotal substance of the juvenile letters, he censored them, removing over half of the contents before publication. This volume restores the journal to its original format, making the case for Seward’s importance as a social and cultural commentator. The letters discuss topical events and private concerns, illuminating not only Seward’s life, but also giving fascinating insights into the manners and mores of mid-eighteenth-century provincial life in England. Also included in this volume is a portfolio of four Anglican sermons written by Seward and delivered by unsuspecting clergymen. These were also excised by Scott who agreed with Seward’s family that they were too controversial to publish as their author was a woman. The sermons provide retrospective evidence of Seward’s efforts to contribute to feminist Enlightenment debate. Introducing them into the public domain now gives us an understanding of women’s unacknowledged achievements and also of their silencing.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the late eighteenth-century, elite British women had an unprecedented opportunity to travel. Taking travel home uncovers the souvenir culture these women developed around the texts and objects they brought back with them to realise their ambitions in the arenas of connoisseurship, friendship and science. Key characters include forty-three-year-old Hester Piozzi (Thrale), who honeymooned in Italy; thirty-one-year-old Anna Miller, who accompanied her husband on a Grand Tour; Dorothy Richardson, who undertook various tours of England from the ages of twelve to fifty-two; and the sisters Katherine and Martha Wilmot, who travelled to Russia in their late twenties. The supreme tourist of the book, the political salon hostess Lady Elizabeth Holland, travelled to many countries with her husband, including Paris, where she met Napoleon, and Spain during the Peninsular War. Using a methodology informed by literary and design theory, art history, material culture studies and tourism studies, the book examines a wide range of objects, from painted fans “of the ruins of Rome for a sequin apiece” and the Pope’s “bless’d beads”, to lava from Vesuvius and pieces of Stonehenge. It argues that the rise of the souvenir is representative of female agency, as women used their souvenirs to form spaces in which they could create and control their own travel narratives.
