Book Asian Americans and the Mass Media

Download or read book Asian Americans and the Mass Media written by Virginia Mansfield-Richardson and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2014-06-23 with total page 459 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Asian Americans are the fastest growing minority in the United States comprising nearly 3 percent of the population, yet they are rarely given coverage in the U.S. media, as this book demonstrates. This book, written by an 11-year reporter of The Washington Post who is now an Associate Dean at Ithaca College, is broad in scope and studies the relationship between mass media and this important minority, including: 1) examines the scope and type of coverage afforded Asian Americans in mainstream newspapers through a content analysis of twenty leading newspapers for the year March 1, 1994 to February 28, 1995; 2) examines the opinions of Asian Americans who work in print, radio, and television media both in mainstream media and specialized Asian American media, through a survey asking their negative and positive experiences on the job as related to their ethnicity, and their opnions on how well the media cover Asian Americans; and 3) an historical examination of Asian Americans and media treatment of Asian Americans, and specialized publications serving Asian Americans. No other book has looked at media coverage of Asian Americans as in-depth as this fascinating account of how attitudes towards Asian Americans are shaped in America through questionable coverage of this diverse segment of the population.

Download or read book The Routledge Companion to Digital Journalism Studies written by Bob Franklin and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2016-11-18 with total page 614 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Routledge Companion to Digital Journalism Studies offers an unprecedented collection of essays addressing the key issues and debates shaping the field of Digital Journalism Studies today. Across the last decade, journalism has undergone many changes, which have driven scholars to reassess its most fundamental questions, and in the face of digital change, to ask again: ‘Who is a journalist?’ and ‘What is journalism?’. This companion explores a developing scholarly agenda committed to understanding digital journalism and brings together the work of key scholars seeking to address key theoretical concerns and solve unique methodological riddles. Compiled of 58 original essays from distinguished academics across the globe, this Companion draws together the work of those making sense of this fundamental reconceptualization of journalism, and assesses its impacts on journalism’s products, its practices, resources, and its relationship with audiences. It also outlines the challenge presented by studying digital journalism and, more importantly, offers a first set of answers. This collection is the very first of its kind to attempt to distinguish this emerging field as a unique area of academic inquiry. Through identifying its core questions and presenting its fundamental debates, this Companion sets the agenda for years to come in defining this new field of study as Digital Journalism Studies, making it an essential point of reference for students and scholars of journalism.

Book excerpt: In the context of profound transformations in the professional, business, technological and social context of journalism, it is crucial for journalism studies and education to move beyond limited approaches to the discipline. Among the most significant changes affecting journalism worldwide is the emergence of startup culture, as more and more journalists strike out on their own. In Beyond Journalism, Deuze and Witschge combine extensive global and comparative fieldwork. Through rich case studies of journalism startups around the world, they provide deep insight into the promises and pitfalls of media entrepreneurship. Ultimately, they aim to recognize new and emerging voices as legitimate participants in the discourse about what journalism is, can be and should be. A bold manifesto as well as an in-depth empirical study, this book is essential reading for students and scholars of journalism, media, communication, and related disciplines.

Book Journalism Reporting Writing and Editing

Download or read book Journalism Reporting Writing and Editing written by Rowan Kidd and published by Scientific e-Resources. This book was released on 2018-01-25 with total page 296 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The present book has been brought into being in view of incessant demand pertaining to the subject Journalism, inherently requires that stories be told in-depth. Many newspapers have cut out long articles even before the Internet. They have followed the example set by television news. They have been hit by the rising price of newsprint, and the renewed emphasis on cost cutting. They are convinced that readers are pressed for time, impatient with detail, and conditioned to ingest the news in pellet-like form. The bulk of broadcast news is reporting in the sense that is used is different rather than journalism. It is epitomized by the two-minute wire service radio bulletin on the hour already a fast disappearing format. In this incisive and well-presented work, the book has synthesized the findings to lay down principles of sound journalism for both those in the industry and the citizens, who rely on the free press as a fundamental element of democracy. First and foremost among these principles is journalism's obligation to the truth. It will immensely benefit students, teachers, mass communicators, theoreticians and practitioners alike. Something usable today, a ready reckoner for years to come and a collector's item for all times. A must read endurable and preservable
