Book The 18th Century Climate of Jamaica Derived from the Journals of Thomas Thistlewood 1750 1786

Download or read book The 18th Century Climate of Jamaica Derived from the Journals of Thomas Thistlewood 1750 1786 written by Michael Chenoweth and published by American Philosophical Society. This book was released on 2003 with total page 168 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Thomas Thistlewood is known for his daily records of life on a slave plantation in eighteenth-century Jamaica. Thistlewood's previously unexamined weather journal is shown here to be the most important written record from the Earth's tropical regions available. His observation methods are superior to most of his contemporaries & provide a high-quality daily record of more than 35 years. Comparison of his records with modern weather records indicates that Thistlewood's Jamaica was a much cooler & moister place than in modern times. A 252-year record of tropical storm & hurricane frequency in Jamaica reveals that the late 20th-century minimum in storm frequency is unprecedented.

Book Handbook of East and Southeast Asian Archaeology

Download or read book Handbook of East and Southeast Asian Archaeology written by Junko Habu and published by Springer. This book was released on 2017-12-08 with total page 761 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Handbook of East and Southeast Asian Archaeology focuses on the material culture and lifeways of the peoples of prehistoric and early historic East and Southeast Asia; their origins, behavior and identities as well as their biological, linguistic and cultural differences and commonalities. Emphasis is placed upon the interpretation of material culture to illuminate and explain social processes and relationships as well as behavior, technology, patterns and mechanisms of long-term change and chronology, in addition to the intellectual history of archaeology as a discipline in this diverse region. The Handbook augments archaeologically-focused chapters contributed by regional scholars by providing histories of research and intellectual traditions, and by maintaining a broadly comparative perspective. Archaeologically-derived data are emphasized with text-based documentary information, provided to complement interpretations of material culture. The Handbook is not restricted to art historical or purely descriptive perspectives; its geographical coverage includes the modern nation-states of China, Mongolia, Far Eastern Russia, North and South Korea, Japan, Taiwan, Vietnam, Cambodia, Laos, Thailand, Burma, Malaysia, Indonesia, the Philippines and East Timor.

Book Legal Realism at Yale 1927 1960

Download or read book Legal Realism at Yale 1927 1960 written by Laura Kalman and published by UNC Press Books. This book was released on 2016-08-01 with total page 277 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For more than one hundred years, Harvard's use of the case method of appellate opinions dominated legal education. Deploring the attempt to reduce law to an autonomous system of rules and principles, the realists at Yale developed a functional approach to the discipline--one that stressed the factual context of the case rather than the legal principles it raised, one that attempted to address issues of social policy by integrating law with the social sciences. With their long winning streaks, distinctive traditions, and impressive victories, Ivy teams started a national obsession with football in the first decades of the twentieth century that remains alive today. In so doing they have helped develop our ideals about the role of athletics in college life.

From 1936 to 1940, he won two successive U.S. Opens, one Masters title and three successive Western Opens, held the best scoring average award and was a Ryder Cup player with a 100 percent record. After this memorable run, he "lost his game" and almost disappeared from view. This biography is the first to trace the rise and decline of his career and answer the question: "What happened to Ralph Guldahl?"

  • Author : Samuel B. Hand
  • Publisher : Lexington Books
  • Release : 2003
  • ISBN : 9780739106006
  • Pages : 374 pages

Download or read book The Star That Set written by Samuel B. Hand and published by Lexington Books. This book was released on 2003 with total page 374 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For over a century, from 1854, the year the party was organized, until 1958, Vermonters never failed to elect Republicans to its state and national offices, and every four years they returned a slate of electors pledged to the Republican presidential nominee. The Vermont GOP was trumpeted as the star that never set in the Republican Party's political firmament, until the decline of family farms and the influx of Democrat-leaning urbanites in the 1960s and 1970s eroded the bedrock of Vermont's GOP base. Encompassing the years 1854 to 1974, Samuel Hand's superb historical study documents the rise and fall of Vermont republicanism, exploring the personalities and the religious, political, and social institutions that constituted the Vermont Republican Party. More than simply the authoritative telling of a remarkable century of hegemony for the Vermont GOP, The Star That Set is a compelling story of the waning importance of party in modern American political life.
