Book The Spiritual Journal of Henry David Thoreau

Download or read book The Spiritual Journal of Henry David Thoreau written by Malcolm Clemens Young and published by Mercer University Press. This book was released on 2009 with total page 298 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Most people who care about nature cannot help but use religious language to describe their experience. We can trace many of these conceptions of nature and holiness directly to influential nineteenth-century writers, especially Henry David Thoreau (1817-1862). In Walden, he writes that "God himself culminates in the present moment," and that in nature we encounter, "the workman whose work we are." But what were the sources of his religious convictions about the meaning of nature in human life?

Determined to change, David set out to understand Asperger syndrome and learn to be a better husband with an endearing zeal. His methods for improving his marriage involve excessive note-taking, performance reviews, and most of all, the Journal of Best Practices: a collection of hundreds of maxims and hard-won epiphanies, including “Don’t change the radio station when she’s singing along” and “Apologies do not count when you shout them.” David transforms himself from the world’s most trying husband to the husband who tries the hardest. He becomes the husband he’d always meant to be. Filled with humor and wisdom, The Journal of Best Practices is a candid story of ruthless self-improvement, a unique window into living with an autism spectrum condition, and proof that a true heart is the key to happy marriage.

Book The Journal of an Artist

Download or read book The Journal of an Artist written by MR David Palladini and published by Black Swan Press. This book was released on 2011-04-01 with total page 160 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The Journal of an Artist" is a bracingly honest look at a man who chose to honor his authentic path by devoting his life to art. Must one suffer to create art? Is an artist's life only unacknowledged work and unrecognized sacrifice? David's writings, and more importantly - his life and art - say no. Great beauty can come from joy just as easily, if not more so, than from pain and suffering. Born in Italy and emigrated to America as a child, David Palladini's dual cultural background is expressed in the lush creativity of his work. After studying art, photography, and film at New York's Pratt Institute, David's first professional assignment was as a photographer for the 1968 Olympic Games in Mexico City. David is know for the intense colors and dramatic delicacy of his work. Having drawn a variety of works, from movie posters to magazine covers, David is also know for his creation of "The Aquarian Tarot" and "The New Palladini Tarot," both published by U.S. Games Systems, Inc. David has worked and lived in The Hamptons (New York State), Jamaica, and France. He currently lives in Newport Beach, California and continues to paint, write, and exhibit his work.

Book The Journal of Henry David Thoreau 1837 1861

Download or read book The Journal of Henry David Thoreau 1837 1861 written by Henry David Thoreau and published by New York Review of Books. This book was released on 2009-11-24 with total page 707 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Henry David Thoreau’s Journal was his life’s work: the daily practice of writing that accompanied his daily walks, the workshop where he developed his books and essays, and a project in its own right—one of the most intensive explorations ever made of the everyday environment, the revolving seasons, and the changing self. It is a treasure trove of some of the finest prose in English and, for those acquainted with it, its prismatic pages exercise a hypnotic fascination. Yet at roughly seven thousand pages, or two million words, it remains Thoreau’s least-known work. This reader’s edition, the largest one-volume edition of Thoreau’s Journal ever published, is the first to capture the scope, rhythms, and variety of the work as a whole. Ranging freely over the world at large, the Journal is no less devoted to the life within. As Thoreau says, “It is in vain to write on the seasons unless you have the seasons in you.”

Download or read book The Star and the Scepter written by Emmanuel Navon and published by U of Nebraska Press. This book was released on 2020-11 with total page 530 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The first all-encompassing book on Israel’s foreign policy and the diplomatic history of the Jewish people, The Star and the Scepter retraces and explains the interactions of Jews with other nations from the ancient kingdoms of Israel to modernity. Starting with the Hebrew Bible, Emmanuel Navon argues that one cannot grasp Israel’s interactions with the world without understanding how Judaism’s founding document has shaped the Jewish psyche. He sheds light on the people of Israel’s foreign policy through the ages: the ancient kingdoms of Israel, Jewish diasporas in Europe from the Middle Ages to the emancipation, the emerging nineteenth-century Zionist movement, and Zionist diplomacy following World War I and surrounding World War II. Navon elucidates Israel’s foreign policy from the birth of the state in 1948 to our days: the dilemmas and choices at the beginning of the Cold War; Israel’s attempts to establish periphery alliances; the Arab-Israeli conflict; Israel’s relations with Europe, the United States, Russia, Asia, Africa, Latin America, the United Nations, and the Jewish diasporas; and how twenty-first-century energy geopolitics is transforming Israel’s foreign relations today. Navon’s analysis is rooted in two central ideas, represented by the Star of David (faith) and the scepter (political power). First, he contends that the interactions of Jews with the world have always been best served by combining faith with pragmatism. Second, Navon shows how the state of Israel owes its diplomatic achievements to national assertiveness and hard power—not only military strength but economic prowess and technological innovation. Demonstrating that diplomacy is a balancing act between ideals and realpolitik, The Star and the Scepter draws aspirational and pragmatic lessons from Israel’s exceptional diplomatic history.

Book Baseball and the House of David

Download or read book Baseball and the House of David written by P.J. Dragseth and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2021-08-21 with total page 231 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: House of David barnstorming baseball (1915-1957) was played without pre-determined schedules, leagues, player statistics or standings. The Davids quickly gained popularity for their hirsute appearance and flashy, fast-paced style of play. During their 200 seasons, they travelled as many as 30,000 miles, criss-crossing the United States, Canada and Mexico. The Benton Harbor teams invented the pepper game and were winners year after year, becoming legends in barnstorming baseball. Initially a loose affiliation of players, the Davids expanded to three teams--Western, Central and Eastern--as their reputation grew, and hired outsiders to fill the rosters. Prominent among them were pitchers Grover Cleveland Alexander and Charlie "Chief" Bender, both player managers in the early 1930s. They resisted the color barrier, eagerly facing Negro League teams everywhere. In 1934, before their largest crowd to date, they defeated the first Negro team invited to the famed Denver Post Tournament, the great Kansas City Monarchs, for the championship.
