Book excerpt: Excerpt from Journal of the Society of Telegraph Engineers, 1874, Vol. 3: Including Original Communications on Telegraphy and Electrical Science We owe to Gauss and iveber the first great practical realization in abstract science of a system of absolute measurement; but their principles did' not extend rapidly even in the domains of abstract science where their theory was well understood, because the urgent need for its practical application was not felt. When accurate measurement in any definite unit first became prevalent was when it was required by the electric telegraph. The pioneers of science in electric telegraphy, many of whom, happily for us, still work for science and for the electric telegraph, laid down - among various perfectly definite subjects for measurement - a unit of electric resistance - that most primary one of the different things to be measured respecting electricity. I need not remind any of you of the history of electric units of resistance, or of the labours of the Committee of the British Association to bring that system of measurement into harmony with the theoretical definitions of Gauss and Weber. The benefits conferred by introducing a system of definite measurement into the working of the electric telegraph are due not solely - perhaps not even in chief - to the application of Gauss's system, but to the introduction of very accurate and definite standards of resistance and means of reproducing those standards should the originals be lost. The benefit of putting the practical standards into relation with the science of Gauss and Weber has been set forth in the successive reports of the Committee of the British Association on electric measurement, and is well known, I believe, to most of the members of the Society of Telegraph Engineers. But what I wish to say now is that theoretical science has gained great reflected benefit from the introduction of accurate measure ment of resistance into practical telegraphy. This book was released on 2016-10-13 with total page 510 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Journal of the Society of Telegraph Engineers, 1880, Vol. 9: Including Original Communications on Telegraphy and Electrical Science The definition of force shows us that whatever changes or tends to change the motion of matter (or of the molecules of which it is composed), by altering either its direction or its magnitude, is a form of force. Thus gravity is a form of force, for it attraom all matter to the centre of the earth, and it is measured by the rate per second at which a body acquires a velocity in this direction when falling freely at a given spot. Heat is a form of force, for it throws the molecules of matter into violent vibration, or it increases the velocity of their motion in straight lines, which thus becomes the measure of its heat or its temperature. Light is a form of force, for it is produced by the undulation of the molecules of matter, and it is transmitted by the undulations of that medium called Ether, which fills all space. No man has seen or can see a molecule, nor have we any objective idea of what force really is. When we attempt to reach beyond these definitions, we tread upon the threshold of the holy of holies, on whose confines only are we permitted to dwell, and into which we are not yet allowed to enter. Hitherto shalt thou come but no further, and here shall thy proud waves he stayed. Let us, therefore, be content with precise definitions and clear mental conceptions, speculative though they be, of matter inert and of matter in motion. The ultimo finale of the scientific man is theory. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Journal of the Society of Telegraph Engineers, Vol. 4: Including Original Communications on Telegraphy and Electrical Science; 1875 Gentlemen, On assuming the Chair as President of the Society of Telegraph Engineers I desire to return you my thanks for the confidence you have shown and the honour you have done me in placing me in so responsible a position. Although I shall spare no effort to uphold the interests and dignity of the Society and to increase its utility, and although I shall fulfil these duties as a labour of love, I am conscious that I shall have to ask your continued forbearance and indulgence for deficiencies. My task however will be but a light one compared with that which devolved on my predecessors in this chair. They had to create and establish the Society and to perfect its organisation; and, thanks to their wise and skilful guidance and to the liberal assistance of the Institution of Civil Engineers, we are able to meet in this magnificent room this evening some 600 members strong, and to chronicle nothing but prosperity and progress. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Journal of the Society of Telegraph Engineers and of Electricians, 1881, Vol. 10: Including Original Communications on Telegraphy and Electrical Science Weber's measurement has since been repeated with closely accordant results by Joule, Bunsen, Casselman, F. Kohlrausch, and others. In 1851, Weber pointed out that a knowledge of the absolute intensity of the earth's magnetic force also furnishes a basis for an absolute method of measuring steam-motive forces; since, according to the laws of induced currents established by Faraday, whenever a conducting circuit is displaced in a magnetic field, an electro motive force acts in it, the magnitude of which depends only on the dimensions and motion of the circuit, and on the strength of the magnetic field. It is evident that electro-motive forces, thus stated in terms of absolute magnetic intensity, would be known in absolute measure, for the dimensions and motion of the conducting circuit involve only the units of length and time. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Journal of the Institution of Electrical Engineers, Late the Society of Telegraph-Engineers and Electricians, Vol. 32: Including Original Communications on Telegraphy and Electrical Science; May, 1903 Mr. M. Solomon: I should like to add a few remarks to what has yeti-0mm already been said on the Nernst lamp, especially with reference to Professor Ayrton's comments on the candle-power curves shown by Mr. Drake. Of course one does not always get such good results as these, especially so good as those in the curve in Fig. A, which repre sents the mean result of tests on three lamps. That curve does drop a certain amount, and the curve in Fig. B drops rather more, but perhaps the average curve obtained with the commercial lamp of to-day drops more than either. Still I would point out one fact with reference to judging the performance of the lamps by those which one sees burning in shops, namely that in the first part of the curve there is a very marked drop in candle-power from about 130 to 110. My experience is that there is always a drop corresponding to that, though not perhaps always so great, and sometimes a little greater. The result is that after the first 50 hours the light from a Nernst lamp seems to change a good deal in colour on account of this first drop. The light is a very white one at first and remains white during the whole life, but one notices a considerable difference in shade if two lamps, one new and one 50 hours old, are observed side by side. But after that drop the candle-power remains fairly steady, as shown by the curve, which is quite a typical one. When the curve drops Off sharply towards the end it is a sign that the lamp is about to fail. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. At 150 ft. Per minute. Cross traversing motor, 1} b.h.p. At 100 ft. Per minute. Travelling motor, 21 b.h.p. At 100 ft. Per minute. It will be seen that the hoisting gear is forward on the i in this case and a heavy balance weight attached at the back. This is done to keep the controlling platform up, on account of the small amount of head room available. The remaining two cranes in the basement are of a special type, and are named revolving pillar cranes. They are shown at D in Fig. 5, and a full view of the crane and circular track is shown on Fig. 7. Each crane consists of a revolving framework, one end of which is constructed to encircle one of the main pillars of the building, whilst the other is fitted with wheels which run on a circular track attached to the roof. The cage and hoisting gear are fixed near the pillar to the revolving frame, and the travelling motor is at the outer end near the wheels, the two motions being driven from one controller. The pillar end of the frame runs on a heavy casting which, when bolted up, forms a vertical circular support carrying a square horizontal flange on the bottom. The end of the frame surrounds this support and carries two rollers which bear on the vertical surface, thus keeping the motion circular. These cranes are capable of lifting 1 ton at 60 ft. Per minute with 6 b.h.p. And revolving at 150 ft. Per minute with 1} b.h.p. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
