S. 1900-03 We have, accordingly, so far as I can see, to face the established fact that the bottom fisheries are not only exhaustible, but in rapid and continuous process of exhaustion; that the rate at which sea fishes multiply and grow, even in favourable seasons, is exceeded by the rate of capture. The rate of exhaustion is shown to be different for different species of fish. The more valuable flat fishes, plaice and prime fish, Show the most marked signs of diminished and diminishing abundance. These differences should obviously be noted, and if possible still further elucidated, in order that the difficulties in the way of remedial measures may be intelligently anticipated and met. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Journal of the Marine Biological Association of the United Kingdom, Vol. 4 The Journal of our Association cannot be allowed to appear without a few words in memory of our first President, the great naturalist and leader of Science, whom we all mourn. Huxley's studies in marine biology, and his position as a Government official, as well as his keen, practical common-sense, made his selection as a member of two Government Commissions on Fisheries (in 1863 and again in 1883) very appropriate. He did valuable work on those Commissions, and in 1881 was appointed, by Sir William Harcourt, to be Inspector of Salmon Fisheries. In 1883 he took an active part in the work of the International Fisheries Exhibition, and emphasized in an address given there, the fact that, whilst civilized man had brought all the resources of science to bear on the "harvest of the land," little or nothing had been done in the same spirit for the harvest of the sea." When, in 1884, the movement was set on foot for the foundation of the Marine Biological Association, Huxley, as President of the Royal Society, took the chair at the important meeting in the rooms of that Society, at which the Association was founded, and subsequently he consented to be the first President of the Association. With that thoroughness and conscientiousness which marked all his work, our President, though no longer in full health and vigour, attended regularly the meetings of the Council, and gave the most careful attention to the very onerous business which had to be discharged in the early days of the organization of the Association, and the building of the Plymouth Laboratory. His advice and direction were always valued in the highest degree by the Council, and his genial presence at our meetings was greatly appreciated, especially in view of the fact that he travelled from Eastbourne to London, in order to assist us. After seven years, when the laboratory was in full working order, he asked us, on the ground of his delicate health, to accept his resignation of the presidency, which, reluctantly, we did. The successful launching of our Association, the assistance given to it by the Government, by the City Companies, and by other public bodies, are mainly due to the one fact, that we had at our head a man so profoundly trusted as was I Professor Huxley. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Journal of the Marine Biological Association of the United Kingdom, 1910-13, Vol. 9 Systematic examination Of tow-nettings for pelagic fish-eggs began on February 11th, and in the early months before the steamer was in commission, owing to the exigencies Of weather and time which attend the use Of a small sailing-boat, samples were taken only inside the Sound or in its near vicinity. As will be seen from the analysis of the collections given in Table I, there was a break Of more than a months duration, beginning early in March. From April to the end of August the ss. Oithona was available, which not only rendered collections from the Open-sea areas possible, but also permitted the use Of the Petersen young-fish trawl, by which large quantities of fish-eggs could be Obtained. The quantities so Obtained were generally much too large to admit Of their individual examination, and therefore it was my practice to pick out a portion of the total eggs for careful examination and frequently for hatching in the laboratory, while the residue was scrutinized as carefully as possible so that the rarer specimens should not be omitted. After a certain amount of practice one can recognize many of the familiar species by size and other peculiarities even with the naked eye, SO that after a confirmatory microscopic examination it is possible to Obtain a fair knowledge as to the identity Of the majority Of the Species present in a plankton sample, and then exceptional eggs can Often - though not, of course, without exception - be discerned. In the case Of tow-net samples, which were taken with coarse (24 strands to the inch) or medium (50 strands to the inch) nets at various depths from'the surface to about 9 or 10 fathoms, care was taken to pick out every individual egg. The hauls were in most cases of 15 minutes' duration, SO that quantitative comparison is to some degree possible. Throughout this work I have conducted my Observations having in view practical fishery questions - cg. The locating Of spawning areas, the duration Of the Spawning period, and the relative extent of the breeding Of various Species of fishes in the Plymouth area - rather than'details of purely biological interest, and therefore my records of the characters Of eggs and larvae have had special regard to points for purpose Of ready identification at the various stages Of development; hence details of embryology have little place in this paper.
