Book excerpt: Excerpt from Journal of the Life, Labours, and Travels of Thomas Shillitoe, Vol. 2 of 2: In the Service of the Gospel of Jesus Christ As I had a'proe ect of spending some time in Hanover before my return, amidst al my secret trouble because of the abomina-a tion of the peo le, a cheering ho e would frequently revive, that there my deep y tried mind wo d experience some relief but alas! How were my expectations disappointed! How did all m hopes vanish how were my bonds increased! Sorrow indeed 6 ed my heart; I was bowed as into the very dust, to find from a pearances there, the day called the Sabbath to be disregarded an abused as much as in any lace where my lot had been cast: and that which added to my affliction was, to find the people warranted herein (as they conceive) by rules and regulations having th own signa ture: for, during a short interview with some of t e seriously disposed there, on my remarking, with evident feelings of sorrow, the manner in which 'the Sabbath is abused, the reply was, Our new rules and regulations sent from England have much contributed to it, so that we have no power to help things.' I procured a copy in print of those regulations, and a translation thereof, which I enclose herewith, for the purpose of reference; with remarks on those parts, which I apprehend (notwithstanding the general purport Of the regulations and the royal introductory admonition, ) tend to frustrate the intention of the whole, and are by too many of the king's subjects made use of for that purpose and I crave of the king, as he values his own soul and the souls of his German sub'ects, a serious perusal of the whole beseeching the Almighty, t at he will give thee to see all their evil bearings, and the wide door which is thus, 0 king, set open by thy autho rity, for thy German subjects to be found in the breach of laws both moral and divine; and that no time may be lost in applying such remedies, as to the king may seem meet, and which may be promotive of the tem oral and eternal interest of his German subjects; for it is rig teousness which exalteth a nation, but sin is a reproach to any people.' Bear with me, O kin if I presume to say, that these rules, set forth by thee (in t e preamble of which it is stated, that it is b Divine authority thou art placed on the throne of thy ro al fat sr, ) must be in accordance with the law Of God, and of C rist Jesus our Lord, if thou art favoured to witness the blessing of heaven to descend upon thee and u on thy dominions, and to experience Divine wisdom to guide t ee and thy counsellors, in the management Of the important affairs of the state. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Journal of the Life, Labours, and Travels of Thomas Shillitoe, in the Service of the Gospel of Jesus Christ, Vol. 1 of 2 In the course of his services as banker's clerk, he had to pur chase lottery-tickets for country correspondents, and to do some other things which troubled him. Hence, as he was a man of a tender conscience, he became uneasy in his new situa tion: he sought for Divine guidance, and after many conflicts of mind, gave up his place, and thought it his duty to learn the trade of a shoemaker, an employment which he followed as long as he continued in business. Book From Quaker to Upper Canadian

Download or read book From Quaker to Upper Canadian written by Robynne Rogers Healey and published by McGill-Queen's Press - MQUP. This book was released on 2006 with total page 319 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From Quaker to Upper Canadian is the first scholarly work to examine the transformation of this important religious community from a self-insulated group to integration within Upper Canadian society. Through a careful reconstruction of local community dynamics, Healey argues that the integration of this sect into mainstream society was the result of religious schisms that splintered the community and compelled Friends to seek affinities with other religious groups as well as the effect of cooperation between Quakers and non-Quakers.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: New England Indians created the multitribal Brothertown and Stockbridge communities during the eighteenth century with the intent of using Christianity and civilized reforms to cope with white expansion. In Red Brethren, David J. Silverman considers the stories of these communities and argues that Indians in early America were racial thinkers in their own right and that indigenous people rallied together as Indians not only in the context of violent resistance but also in campaigns to adjust peacefully to white dominion. All too often, the Indians discovered that their many concessions to white demands earned them no relief. In the era of the American Revolution, the pressure of white settlements forced the Brothertowns and Stockbridges from New England to Oneida country in upstate New York. During the early nineteenth century, whites forced these Indians from Oneida country, too, until they finally wound up in Wisconsin. Tired of moving, in the 1830s and 1840s, the Brothertowns and Stockbridges became some of the first Indians to accept U.S. citizenship, which they called "becoming white," in the hope that this status would enable them to remain as Indians in Wisconsin. Even then, whites would not leave them alone. Red Brethren traces the evolution of Indian ideas about race under this relentless pressure. In the early seventeenth century, indigenous people did not conceive of themselves as Indian. They sharpened their sense of Indian identity as they realized that Christianity would not bridge their many differences with whites, and as they fought to keep blacks out of their communities. The stories of Brothertown and Stockbridge shed light on the dynamism of Indians' own racial history and the place of Indians in the racial history of early America.

Download or read book A Mighty Capital under Threat written by Bill Luckin and published by University of Pittsburgh Press. This book was released on 2020-03-03 with total page 264 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Demographically, nineteenth-century London, or what Victorians called the “new Rome,” first equaled, then superseded its ancient ancestor. By the mid-eighteenth century, the British capital had already developed into a global city. Sustained by its enormous empire, between 1800 and the First World War London ballooned in population and land area. Nothing so vast had previously existed anywhere. A Mighty Capital under Threat investigates the environmental history of one of the world’s global cities and the largest city in the United Kingdom. Contributors cover the feeding of London, waste management, movement between the city’s numerous districts, and the making and shaping of the environmental sciences in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries.
