Download or read book The Gulf War Aftermath written by M. Sadiq and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 309 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1962 Rachel Carson warned of the consequences of man's pollution in her book Silent Spring, a book that some feel marks the real beginning of our environmental awareness. Silent Spring told of the consequences of our increasing pesticide use to birds. Almost 30 years after her warning, the western Arabian Gulf experienced its "silent spring" when approximately 100,000 to 250,000 waterbirds died, along with millions of other organisms, due to the massive oil spill that resulted due to Gulf war. The magnitude of our environmental problems has continued to grow during the last thirty years to a point where even the "doomsday" environmentalists could hardly have envisioned back in 1962. It seems the death of yet uncounted thousands of humans was not sufficient for Saddam Husain. His desire for power and infamy led him to unleash environmental war on mankind. At the end of the Gulf war he set ablaze the oil fields of Kuwait and released more oil into the sea than had been spilled at any time throughout history. These actions were despicable and an affront to civilized man. A quality environment should be a right of all mankind, and to wage war by deliberately polluting the earth cannot be tolerated.

  • Pages : 232 pages

Download or read book Desert Storm written by Michael Mazarr and published by Westview Press. This book was released on 1993-01-19 with total page 232 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The authors analyze the Gulf War, its prelude and aftermath, present an informed debate concerning the military and geopolitical lessons of the war, and draw lessons for adapting U.S. forces and strategy to the post-Cold War era. With the testimony of those who planned and fought the war, they examine whether the United States really discouraged Saddam's aggressive actions; whether deterrence is a reliable foreign policy tool; whether chemical weapons are truly the "poor man's atom bomb?"; whether the war represents a good model for future crises; and how the all-volunteer U.S. force performed. The authors believe that deterrence as a national security strategy is risky; that the theory of maneuver warfare came into its own during Desert Storm; that an adequate logistical effort is indispensible to victory; and that assembling international coalitions will be necessary for victory in future contingency operations. Download or read book Hotel Warriors written by John J. Fialka and published by Woodrow Wilson Center Press. This book was released on 1992-03 with total page 100 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this volume, whose title refers to the correspondents who covered the Persian Gulf war from posh hotels in Riyadh and Dhahran, Wall Street Journal reporter Fialka ably chronicles the day-to-day difficulties faced by reporters - ranging from sheer incompetence to outright obstruction on the part of the U.S. Army - and demonstrates the woeful inadequacy of the pool system set up by the military and the press. In large part, he lambastes the Army for its refusal to accommodate journalists and its general attitude of hostility toward the press. (In contrast, the Marines' flair for self-promotion resulted in coverage more extensive than their military role in the war warranted.) Fialka attributes a good deal of this attitude to the military's lingering distrust of the media rooted in the Vietnam War experience. While there was little overt censorship, most of the material written and photographed during the Gulf war was never seen by the American public, and, Fialka says, the Army was shortchanged in accounts of its speedy victory. Most important, says Fialka, the acrimonious relationship between the military and the media bodes ill for future collaborations between the two.
