Book Journal of the British Archaeological Association 1875 Vol 31 Classic Reprint

Download or read book Journal of the British Archaeological Association 1875 Vol 31 Classic Reprint written by British Archaeological Association and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-11 with total page 592 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Journal of the British Archaeological Association, 1875, Vol. 31 Tub British Archaeological Association was founded in 1843, to investigate, preserve, and illustrate, all ancient monuments of the history, manners, customs, and arts of our forefathers, in furtherance of the principles on which the Society of Antiquaries of London was established; and to aid the objects of that institution by rendering available resources which had not been drawn upon, and which, indeed, did not come within the scope of any antiquarian or literary society. The means by which the Association proposed to effect this object are: 1. By holding communication with Correspondents throughout the kingdom, and with provincial Antiquarian Societies, as well as by intercourse with similar Associations in foreign countries. 2. By holding frequent and regular Meetings for the consideration and discussion of communications made by the Associates, or received from Correspondents. 3. By promoting careful observation and preservation of antiquities discovered in the progress of public works, such as railways, sewers, foundations of buildings, etc. 4. By encouraging individuals or associations in making researches and excavations, and affording them suggestions and co-operation. 5. By opposing and preventing, as far as may be practicable, all injuries with which Ancient National Monuments of every description may from time to time be threatened. 6. By using every endeavour to spread abroad a correct taste for Archaeology, and a just appreciation of Monuments of Ancient Art, so as ultimately to secure a general interest in their preservation. 7. By collecting accurate drawings, plans, and descriptions of Ancient National Monuments, and by means of Correspondents preserving authentic memorials of all antiquities which may from time to time be brought to light. 8. By establishing a Journal devoted exclusively to the objects of the Association, as a means of spreading antiquarian information and maintaining a constant communication with all persons interested in such pursuits. 9. By holding Annual Congresses in different parts of the country, to examine into their special antiquities, to promote an interest in them, and thereby conduce to their preservation. Thirteen public Meetings are held, on the second and fourth Wednesdays in the month, during the season, at eight o'clock in the evening, for the reading and discussion of papers, and for the inspection of all objects of antiquity forwarded to the Council. To these Meetings Members have the privilege of introducing their friends. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Journal of the British Archaeological Association, 1862, Vol. 18 I could have wished that this meeting had commenced, or rather that the meeting which has begun, could have been continued where it was commenced, at the Guildhall; which, for a purpose such as the present, would undoubtedly have been the most appropriate place for our reception by the mayor and corporation, and for the inauguration of proceedings of an archaeological character. But this is one of those cases in which we have had to consider the habits of modem civilization, and to ascertain where the ladies who honour us with their presence could find the most comfortable reception. I am pleased to see that this room, which has so often been the stage of your festive gatherings, but which is now the scene of something which I will not call serious, - but which, nevertheless, approaches to the nature of business, - is so well filled by the ladies, who thus shew the interest which they take in our proceedings; because we know that nothing in this world prospers heartily and well unless the ladies are kind enough to take an interest in it. This book was released on 2016-07-06 with total page 414 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Journal of the British Archaeological Association, 1864, Vol. 20 It is in this point of View that I highly value the retention among us of our provincial dialects, and should regret to see them smelted down into a genteel uniformity of language and pronunciation. The common Speech of our separate counties is a continuous testimony of the origin of its people and of their place in the heterogeneous history of the British race. Our good broad Yorkshire indicates the stalwart northern stock from which we have sprung; and wheni hear it well out-spoken, either by the ploughman in the field, or by my friend, the Hon. And Rev. Philip Savile, whom I see before me, in all its emphatic vigour, I am almost sorry that it has left the hall, and I hope it will stick to the cottage. But the immediate objects of this Society are not the archaeology of our earth, our race, or our language. They are Simply and purely historical. We shew little favour to theories, even though founded upon a historical basis. We ask for facts and evidence of facts, and we are content to leave to others the responsibility of their own conclusions. Most people of any ingenuity can discover in history what ever they wish to find there; and if you choose to make a bad use of the materials with which we supply you, do it at your own risk, and do not lay the blame on archaeology. Download or read book The Journal of the British Archaeological Association Vol 15 written by and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-03-15 with total page 450 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Journal of the British Archaeological Association, Vol. 15: Established 1843, for the Encouragement and Prosecution of Researches Into the Arts and Monuments of the Early and Middle Ages Fourteen years have now elapsed since the first attempt in this country was made by the British Archæological Association, following the example instituted by the antiquaries of Normandy at Caen, to hold a congress for the examination and consideration of the antiquities of any given locality. Our first essay was made, in September 1844, in the county of Kent; and the meeting was held at Canterbury. It was at that time deemed necessary to offer arguments in favour of such inquiries. These, happily, are now no longer required; for the results of that meeting established upon a firm basis the utility of such assemblages, and convinced those who were sceptical as to then value. Since that time, among other bodies besides the Association and the Institute, belonging to, and holding their ordinary sittings in, London, many local societies have followed the example, and thereby given to the public more general and more just notions of the antiquities of our island than had hitherto been afforded. Among those branches formed for the promotion of archaeological research, stands conspicuously the Wiltshire Archaeological and Natural History Society, established in 1854; with whose members we have the gratification this day of associating in the warmest feelings of friendship. This book was released on 2016-09-09 with total page 430 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Journal of the British Archaeological Association, 1897, Vol. 3 IN accordance with long-established custom, it behoves the editor of the journal OF the british archeo logical association to say a few words by way of Preface, and the present Editor does so with the more confidence and pleasure because he is deeply sensible of the kindness and consideration he has met with from all the members of the Association with whom he has had personal or official relations since the mantle of Dr. W. DE gray birch was transferred to his shoulders. He feels the onerous nature of the task which has been assigned him in succeeding so able an Editor and so renowned an Archaeologist as Dr. Birch; but his hope is, and his endeavour will ever be, that the Association, and the great and important work in which it is engaged in fostering a love for, and an intelligent interest in, Archaeological studies, shall not suffer in his hands. The present volume, the third OF the new series, for the year 1897, contains twenty-nine of the principal Papers which were laid before the Congress in London in the summer of 1896, or during the evening meet ings of the Session of 1896-7 in London, as well as a record of the Congress and evening meetings. The Volume is enriched, as in former years, with numerous full-page illustrations, and smaller woodcuts, which have been contributed by the authors of the Papers to which they relate, to whom our warm thanks are due. In this way the appearance of the Journal is greatly improved, and its value enhanced. The contents are, as usual, very miscellaneous, and embrace a wide range of subjects; but once again we have to confess that no very important or unusual archaeological discovery will be found within its pages. The chief event of the year, from an archaeological point of view, was the exploration of the so-called Danes' Graves in Yorkshire by canon greenwell, in which he discovered that they were in no wise connected with the Danes, to whom local tradition assigned them, but were in reality of Early British origin.
