Social Science, or the Science of Society, treats of man as a social being. It fulfils its functions just as other sciences fulfil theirs, by collecting facts, applying principles, and reaching the general laws which govern the social relations. Its character as a Science needs not be questioned. The subjects it embraces, Education, Health, Economy and Jurisprudence, are confessedly susceptible of scientific treatment, and what is true of the parts, is equally true of the whole. Its range is broad, too broad, we are sometimes told, to be thoroughly grasped. In minds accustomed to a specific pursuit, or fixed upon a definite object, it is apt to excite distrust. But its comprehensiveness is really an advantage. It is a safeguard against narrowness of opinion or exertion. It prevents the possibility of considering any single interest as exclusive; it discloses the connection of different lines of thought and action, and unites the branches of enquiry, instead of leaving them severed, each from the other, to the injury of all. Hill, Austin, Tex.; C. C. Jones, Jr., Augusta, Ga.; Rev. H. L. Wayland, Philadelphia; Rev. Oscar C. McCulloch, Indianapolis; Professor J. W. Jenks, Galesburg, Ill.; Hon. Seymour Dexter, Elmira, N.Y. Mr. George Walker, late consul-general at Paris, who had accepted a place on the committee, died in January, 1888, thereby depriving his associates of the service of a gentleman specially familiar with the subjects investigated. This committee was appointed at the instance of Mr. John P. Townsend, of New York, a well-known authority concerning savings banks and an associate of the International Committee, which proposes to hold a conference at Paris, in July, 1889, to consider the status and result of such institutions throughout the world. The American Committee will continue and complete its reports here submitted, for presentation and preservation at Paris, in July next, and also at the Saratoga meeting of September, 1889. In the list herewith submitted the annual and life members are given alphabetically, and the honorary and corresponding members according to nationality. The only distinction between honorary and corresponding members is that the former reside in the United States, and the latter in foreign countries. It was voted at a meeting of the General Council that the "Journal" of the Association shall not be sent to any annual member who has not paid his dues for the year in which the convention is held which is reported in the "Journal." It was subsequently voted at a meeting held at Woodmont, Conn., July 6, 1898, that the General Secretary be permitted to use his discretion in carrying into effect this resolution.
