Book excerpt: Excerpt from Journal of Psycho-Asthenics, Vol. 18: Devoted to the Care, Training and of the Feeble-Minded and Epileptic; September, 1913 In his own department, caring for the feeble-minded, the imbecile, the idiotic, he was past master. No lord or lady of high degree could have been treated by him with greater respect and kindness than he showed to these poor creatures. It was a lesson to even the humanitarian to go through his institution with him and see how his own self-respect and conscious manhood were re ected, so far as it could be, in these objects of his care. He was sincerely devoted to them and I recall one night when he paced the oor in restless anxiety for fear one of the old-tim ers, Ike, I think they called him, who was critically ill, should die. Dr. Knight's ideas as to the care of these imperfect creatures were like himself, simple and unpretending. He looked after their physical well-being with constant care, he furnished school ing for those who needed it, but not a dollar was spent for show or display. The children loved him and crowded about him as a loving father. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Download or read book Journal of Psycho Asthenics Vol 21 written by UNKNOWN. AUTHOR and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-08-05 with total page 338 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Journal of Psycho-Asthenics, Vol. 21: Devoted to the Care, Training and Treatment of the Feeble-Minded and Epileptic, Published Quarterly at Faribault, Minnesota The main object of this paper is to present some statistics on a number of questions relating to the care of the feebleminded. The findings will be discussed with reference to possible remedies. Officials of State Institutions are somewhat familiar with many of the conditions the figures reveal. The public in general, however, is imbued with views that are wholly at variance with most of them, or lacks information entirely. The main question concerns the different percentages of the total number of existing feeble-minded that are at present in different kinds of institutions and parts of society. So far as there exists a clearly defined policy as to what the State should aim to do in the care of the feeble-minded the facts here will show in what degree the State is accomplishing its chief aim. The second question to be considered will be how this distribution of the feeble-minded in society is affected by grade of feeble-mindedness, sex, age, and legislation. A third question that will be considered is that of the frequency with which the feeble-minded leave institutions permanently after they were once committed. And fourth, how this is affected again by the same factors of grade, sex, age and legislation. The determination of the percentage of the existing feebleminded that are in different institutions, and outside, involves a determination of the total number existing in the country. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Journal of Psycho-Asthenics, Vol. 16: September, 1911; American Association for the Study of the Feeble-Minded Going into a new' work at a busy time, soon followed by a legislature which changed nearly all the law go'verning the insti tution, I have been kept very busy and what little plans I had made for this occasion have been entirely spoiled. Being a youngster in the work, it seemed manifestly improper for me to attempt to instruct the Older and wiser, in the work. I had planned, at least, to work up something for an address, as that seems to be the chief function Of this Office, but business has de Creed otherwise and I am compelled in order to carry out the custom Of a president's address to fill in with anything that comes to hand. What it might have been I can not say but will leave it to your imagination which I hope will deal kindly with it. Book Intellectuals and Society

Download or read book Intellectuals and Society written by Thomas Sowell and published by Basic Books. This book was released on 2012-03-06 with total page 496 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The influence of intellectuals is not only greater than in previous eras but also takes a very different form from that envisioned by those like Machiavelli and others who have wanted to directly influence rulers. It has not been by shaping the opinions or directing the actions of the holders of power that modern intellectuals have most influenced the course of events, but by shaping public opinion in ways that affect the actions of power holders in democratic societies, whether or not those power holders accept the general vision or the particular policies favored by intellectuals. Even government leaders with disdain or contempt for intellectuals have had to bend to the climate of opinion shaped by those intellectuals. Intellectuals and Society not only examines the track record of intellectuals in the things they have advocated but also analyzes the incentives and constraints under which their views and visions have emerged. One of the most surprising aspects of this study is how often intellectuals have been proved not only wrong, but grossly and disastrously wrong in their prescriptions for the ills of society -- and how little their views have changed in response to empirical evidence of the disasters entailed by those views.

Book excerpt: The constant and growing use of the Binet-Simon intelligence scale in public schools, institutions for defectives, reform schools, juvenile courts, and police courts is sufficient evidence of the intrinsic worth of the method. It is generally recognized, however, that the serviceableness of the scale has hitherto been seriously limited, both by the lack of a sufficiently detailed guide and by a number of recognized imperfections in the scale itself. The Stanford revision and extension has been worked out for the purpose of correcting as many as possible of these imperfections, and it is here presented with a rather minute description of the method as a whole and of the individual tests. The aim has been to present the explanations and instructions so clearly and in such an untechnical form as to make the book of use, not only to the psychologist, but also to the rank and file of teachers, physicians, and social workers. More particularly, it is designed as a text for use in normal schools, colleges, and teachers' reading-circles. (PsycINFO Database Record (c) 2004 APA, all rights reserved).

Book Intellectuals and Race

Download or read book Intellectuals and Race written by Thomas Sowell and published by Basic Books (AZ). This book was released on 2013-03-12 with total page 194 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Intellectuals and Race is a radical book in the original sense of one that goes to the root of the problem. The role of intellectuals in racial strife is explored in an international context that puts the American experience in a wholly new light. The views of individual intellectuals have spanned the spectrum, but the views of intellectuals as a whole have tended to cluster. Indeed, these views have clustered at one end of the spectrum in the early twentieth century and then clustered at the opposite end of the spectrum in the late twentieth century. Moreover, these radically different views of race in these two eras were held by intellectuals whose views on other issues were very similar in both eras. Intellectuals and Race is not, however, a book about history, even though it has much historical evidence, as well as demographic, geographic, economic and statistical evidence-- all of it directed toward testing the underlying assumptions about race that have prevailed at times among intellectuals in general, and especially intellectuals at the highest levels. Nor is this simply a theoretical exercise. The impact of intellectuals' ideas and crusades on the larger society, both past and present, is the ultimate concern. These ideas and crusades have ranged widely from racial theories of intelligence to eugenics to "social justice" and multiculturalism. In addition to in-depth examinations of these and other issues, Intellectuals and Race explores the incentives, the visions and the rationales that drive intellectuals at the highest levels to conclusions that have often turned out to be counterproductive and even disastrous, not only for particular racial or ethnic groups, but for societies as a whole.
