Book excerpt: Excerpt from Journal of Anatomy, Vol. 62: Originally the Journal of Anatomy and Physiology, Conducted on Behalf of the Anatomical Society of Great Britain and Ireland; October 1922-July 1923 The apparatus used was one Of the ordinary coils used in the therapeutic X-ray department of King's College Hospital, working with a spark-gap Of 6 inches. The current through the primary coil was about 4 amperes at 100 volts, while the current through the secondary was 2 milliamperes. A Coolidge tube was used and the anticathode was 4 inches from the pastille which was, Of course, placed on the Side Of the screen away from the tube. The eggs were covered with a layer Of cotton wool and placed in a cardboard box for irradiation. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Download or read book Journal of Anatomy and Physiology Vol 62 written by William Turner and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02-11 with total page 486 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Journal of Anatomy and Physiology, Vol. 62: October Number, 1907 A study of the pulse in the jugular vein has now become established as a routine method of examining disordered hearts - an advance due to the labours of Dr James Mackenzie and of those who have adopted his method.1 With the introduction Of a new clinical method, as is also the case with a new operative procedure, certain structures and relationships assume 'an increased importance and require a fresh description. In this paper I propose to recast our description of the Structures which seem to me to be directly concerned in the production of the venous pulse - my account having reference only to the arrangement as found in the human body. I propose to deal not only with the normal but also with the disordered heart, using for this purpose the series of specimens sent to me for examination by Dr James Mackenzie. These hearts are of special value for the purpose Of study, because Dr Mackenzie had kept accurate records Of their action during many years prior to the death of the patient. Comprehensive Occlusal Concepts in Clinical Practice also features a comprehensive review of occlusal and periodontal literature, establishes occlusal principles and practice protocols as routine, and aids in developing the reader’s critical ability to know when and when not to perform occlusal therapy. This is a unique book in its scope, thoroughness, and practicality, making occlusal concepts easily understood, yet also demonstrating the specific skills needed to perform the details of a physiologic occlusal scheme.

Book Perils of Progress

Download or read book Perils of Progress written by John Ashton and published by Zed Books. This book was released on 1999 with total page 372 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This work offers a challenge to our society's largely unquestioning commitment to new technologies, and practical advice on how to deal with their adverse effects. While modern technologies have no doubt brought many benefits, the authors argue that our confidence in them is seriously misplaced. They consider an array of health and environmental issues including: the damaging effects on human health of certain microwaves, including those from mobile phones and television transmission towers; the effects of aluminium in food and other consumer products; and the evidence that the acids in margarines may be more detrimental to health than butter.

Book Interactions between the mammalian main and accessory olfactory systems

Download or read book Interactions between the mammalian main and accessory olfactory systems written by Jorge A Larriva-Sahd and published by Frontiers E-books. This book was released on 2015-01-05 with total page 156 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The functional cross-talk and structural interaction between the main and accessory olfactory bulb is a central problem in mammalian sensory neurobiology. The early supposition that volatile substances and pheromones, most of them hydrosoluble molecules, are exclusively sensed and decoded by the main (MOS) and accessory olfactory systems (AOS), respectively, needs to be revised. In fact, a large number of structural and functional evidences accumulated during the last few decades, suggests that rather than separated entities, the MOS and AOS act synergically, bringing about physiological and behavioural responses. The goal of the present Research Topic will be to gather original research studies and revision papers, performed by the most authoritative research groups that have recently contributed to the broad area of sensory neurobiology. Special attention should be given to contributions addressed to the MOB and AOB cross-talk, involving current neuroanatomical techniques.

Book The Bioarchaeology of Structural Violence

Download or read book The Bioarchaeology of Structural Violence written by Lori A. Tremblay and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2020-08-27 with total page 290 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume is a resource for bioarchaeologists interested in using a structural violence framework to better understand and contextualize the lived experiences of past populations. One of the most important elements of bioarchaeological research is the study of health disparities in past populations. This book offers an analysis of such work, but with the benefit of an overarching theoretical framework. It examines the theoretical framework used by scholars in cultural and medical anthropology to explore how social, political, and/or socioeconomic structures and institutions create inequalities resulting in health disparities for the most vulnerable or marginalized segments of contemporary populations. It then takes this framework and shows how it can allow researchers in bioarchaeology to interpret such socio-cultural factors through analyzing human skeletal remains of past populations. The book discusses the framework and its applications based on two main themes: the structural violence of gender inequality and the structural violence of social and socioeconomic inequalities.
