This is an OCR edition with typos. Excerpt from book: CHAP. II. Residence At The Cape Of Good Hope Till The Author's Voyage To The South Sea. SECT. I. Rejidence at Cape Town. TH E Cape is ufually mentioned in too high terms 77 by fea-faring men; particularly by fuch as have been there only for a fhort time. The reafon probably is, that people, who are weary of a long and tedious voyage of feveral months duration, are ufually enchanted with the firft fpot of earth they fet foot upon, of which they afterwards make their reports according to the impreffion it firft made upon them. This is fo much more likely to happen with refpect to the Cape, as mariners are feldom ufed to ftay there long enough to be weary of it. On the contrary, however, it is not unufual for failors to pine and grow uneafy even here, after having been fome months on more, and to long to go to fea again. I have been informed Captain Cook, that he, as well as Sir Joseph Banks and Dr. Solander, prejudiced by the relations of others, confidered the Cape, the firft time they faw it, as the moft delightful and fertile place in the world. So that even the barren heaths to the north of the town, were at the fame time very innocently miftaken by them for fine fields of corn. For my part, not to lead my readers into any error concerning this point, the account I here give of the Cape has not been written without fome .confideration. I muft, notwithftanding, previoufly remind them, that a view of the map inferted at the end of the book, will give the beft and cleareft idea of the pofition of the harbours and creeks of this part of the world, as well as of the names and fituation of the different mountains. By this means too, the following defcription will be the more eafily underftood. The town itfelf is the only one in the whole colony, and is properly ...

Book John Clements Wickham Charles Darwin s Glorious Fellow

Download or read book John Clements Wickham Charles Darwin s Glorious Fellow written by Barrie Jamieson and published by . This book was released on 2019-05-11 with total page 371 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: John Clements Wickham RN, played an essential navigational role in three voyages of HMS Beagle, the ship on which Charles Darwin, in the second voyage, was naturalist. On the third voyage Wickham was the Commander, from 1837 until he left, ostensibly owing to ill health, in 1841. From 1842 to 1858, he played a prominent role in Brisbane affairs, as Police Magistrate and, later, Government Resident, living at Newstead House. In 1842 he married Anna, daughter of Hannibal Macarthur, who died in 1852, and he married Ellen Deering in 1857 both of whom bore children. Darwin described Wickham as a glorious fine fellow. But despite such praise, and Wickham's great contributions to the founding of Australia, as a navigator, charting and naming its coastline, and as an administrator, no biography of him has appeared apart from some valuable essays and chapters and an excellent booklet by Brian Stewart. The present work attempts to track Wickham's activities throughout his life, until his death at Biarritz in 1864. The text has been kept close to that of the chroniclers of the voyages, Phillip Parker King, Robert Fitz-Roy, Charles Darwin and John Lort Stokes, his companions on board.
