It is possible, indeed probable, that none of these seventy printed copies, ex cept the two referred to, are in existence. Book History of Georgia Agriculture 1732 1860

Download or read book History of Georgia Agriculture 1732 1860 written by James C. Bonner and published by University of Georgia Press. This book was released on 2009-09-01 with total page 254 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Published in 1964, A History of Georgia Agriculture describes the early land and labor systems in the state. Agriculture came to Georgia with the first settlers and was largely directed toward the economic self-sufficiency of the British Empire. James C. Bonner's portrayal of the colonial cattle industry is prescient of the later open-range West. He also clearly shows how shortages of horses and implements, poor plowing techniques, and a lack of skill in tool mechanics spawned the cotton-slaves-mules trilogy of antebellum agriculture, which in turn led to land exhaustion and eventual emigration. By the 1850s the general southern desire for economic independence promoted diversification and such scientific farming techniques as crop rotation, contour plowing, and fertilization. Planting of pasture forage to improve livestock and hold soil was advocated and the teaching of agriculture in public schools was promoted. Contemporary descriptions of individual farms and plantations are interspersed to give a picture of day to day farming. Bonner presents a picture of the average Southern farmer of 1850 which is neither that of a landless hireling nor of the traditional planter, but of a practical man trying to make a living.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Journal of the Proceedings in Georgia: Beginning October 5, 1740 When Volume IV of the Colonial Records of the State of Georgia, Stephens' Journal, went to press, the com piler believed that the two manuscript volumes contained in it were all of the Journal kept by Colonel Stephens then in existence. He knew that there had been, at one time, a third manuscript volume, but supposed that it, like many other Colonial Records of Georgia, had been irretrievably lost, since it could be found neither among the archives in the State Capitol nor in the Public Rec ords Offices in London, nor, indeed, was he at that time able to find any trace of it elsewhere. Since his Volume IV. Went to press, however, through the indefatigable effort of a loyal son of Georgia, Mr. W. J. De Renne, of Savannah, a scion of one of the most distinguished Revolutionary families of the State, and a gentleman who has perhaps done more than any other living Georgian to rescue from oblivion the early history of our State, a copy of this lost volume has been found and purchased by him at an enormous price. Through his courtesy and generosity the compiler has been permitted to make a transcript of this rare record and present it to his readers as a supplement to his fourth volume, realizing that no compilation of Colonial Records of Georgia will be complete without it. Of this record it has been possible, after several years of diligent effort on the part of Mr. De Renne, to locate only two other copies, and it is entirely probable that no others are in existence. The Trustees had a hundred copies printed, thirty of which we're distributed among themselves, when the printing-office, it is said, was de stroyed by fire, and the remaining seventy perished. Hence the exceeding rarity of the book. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book George Whitefield

Download or read book George Whitefield written by Geordan Hammond and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2016-05-12 with total page 468 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: George Whitefield (1714-70) was one of the best known and most widely travelled evangelical revivalist in the eighteenth century. For a time in the middle decades of the eighteenth century, Whitefield was the most famous person on both sides of the Atlantic. An Anglican clergyman, Whitefield soon transcended his denominational context as his itinerant ministry fuelled a Protestant renewal movement in Britain and the American colonies. He was one of the founders of Methodism, establishing a distinct brand of the movement with a Calvinist orientation, but also the leading itinerant and international preacher of the evangelical movement in its early phase. Called the 'Apostle of the English empire', he preached throughout the whole of the British Isles and criss-crossed the Atlantic seven times, preaching in nearly every town along the eastern seaboard of America. His own fame and popularity were such that he has been dubbed 'Anglo-America's first religious celebrity', and even one of the 'Founding Fathers of the American Revolution'. This collection offers a major reassessment of Whitefield's life, context, and legacy, bringing together a distinguished interdisciplinary team of scholars from both sides of the Atlantic. In chapters that cover historical, theological, and literary themes, many addressed for the first time, the volume suggests that Whitefield was a highly complex figure who has been much misunderstood. Highly malleable, Whitefield's persona was shaped by many audiences during his lifetime and continues to be highly contested.
