Book excerpt: Excerpt from Journal-History of the Seventy-Third Ohio Volunteer Infantry, 1866 In September, 1561, a group of young men at Chillicothe, Ohio, discussed the possibility of raising a new regiment of volunteers, under the first call of the President for three hundred thousand men. After due consideration, they determined to make the attempt, and invited Captain Orland Smith, of the "Chillicothe Greys," to accept the colonelcy, and Jacob Hyer, Esq., of Greenfield, the lieutenant-colonelcy of the regiment. These gentlemen accepted the positions tendered them, and at once gave themselves to the work of recruiting and organization, A number of conditional commissions were issued by the Governor, and, by the middle of October, the work of recruiting was fairly begun. The new regiment was to be called the Seventy-third Ohio, and was ordered to rendezvous at "Camp Logan," near Chillicothe. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from History of the Eighty-Third Ohio Volunteer Infantry: The Greyhound Regiment Fifty years have passed since the eighty-third regiment, Ohio Volunteer Infantry, was organized. Fifty years have passed since those one thousand men entered the service of their Country and marched with deadly weapons to meet other thousands equally armed. Why? It seems no more than right and proper that some words should be said in answer to this query. Was the reason a good Que, why these should leave their occupations of production and enter on one of destruction? Let a few comparisons be made the better to understand this reason. Book The Story of a Regiment

Download or read book The Story of a Regiment written by E. Hannaford and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-10 with total page 628 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Story of a Regiment: A History of the Campaigns, and Associations in the Field, of the Sixth Regiment Ohio Volunteer Infantry In bringing to a completion the product of many weary hours' labor, extended over a period of more than two years, it would be indecent should I omit to acknowledge the extent of my indebtedness to a large number of friends for their generous cooperation, in furnishing data and materials of various kinds, as well as for the constant encouragement and sympathy which have made possible what could never otherwise have been accomplished, notwithstanding that my task has truly been a labor of love. I desire to thank them all most heartily; and if any of them turn from this volume with a feeling of a disappointment, it is no more than I have done very many times during its preparations, on account of the disparity between my design and the actual performance. The map of the Cheat Mountain region was prepared expressly for this work by Mr. George B. Nicholson (to whom my warmest thanks are due for great and constant assistance, in many different ways), and is, I believe, the only one extant that is worth the trouble of referring to, in connection with the history of the campaign there in the fall of 1861. I regret that it has been impossible, from pecuniary considerations, to introduce more maps, as at one time I hoped that I should be justified in doing; but this is of the less consequence, as good maps of Kentucky, Tennessee, etc., can readily be procured almost anywhere. This book was released on 2016-10-12 with total page 156 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from History of the 104th Regiment Ohio Volunteer Infantry: From 1862 to 1865 I hzue long been impressed with the fact that time is fast obliterating the memories of the events which transpired among the rank and file of those great armies, which, in the war of The Great Slaveholders' Rebellion, finallv triumphed 0\ er treason and disunion, and placed our beloved countrv in the front rank of Christian nations, struck the shackles from four million slaves, and established the supreme authority of the Federal republic in these United States. So in the spring of began writing an account of the travels, ser\ices, and doings generallv of the 10., tth Ohio Volunteer Infantr), in that war, from August, is6z, to June 28, 1865, when the bovs were finally discharged from the service. Reminiscences of the Rebellion, as that series of papers was called, soon came to the notice of considerable numbers of ex-members of the regiment, and on August 6, at the i6th annual reunion of the regiment, a resolution was carried by which I was authorized to revise them for use as a history of the regiment. This revision is, in substance, the same material as the Reminiscences of the Rebellion, with all the incidents per sonal to im'self, and not of an historical character, carefully expunged fmm the work. Besides this I have tried to get as full and complete a roster of o icers of the regiment and of officers and soldiers of each and e\ erv company as is now possible. \vell knowing that this fails to give all there was of interest in the services of the 104th, mv only apology will be that I have tried to give a full and fair account of cvcrv incident of the regiment's historv, and that wherein I may have failed has been due to a lack of knowledge.
