Book A Night of Serious Drinking

Download or read book A Night of Serious Drinking written by René Daumal and published by Abrams. This book was released on 2003-04-29 with total page 112 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The French poet and author of Mount Analogue shares a satirical allegory of the absurdities of intellectual society. As in Rene Daumal’s cult classic Mount Analogue, A Night of Serious Drinking concerns an autobiographical protagonist on a mind-expanding journey. But rather than seeking enlightenment, the anonymous narrator recounts an evening getting drunk with a group of friends. As the party becomes intoxicated and exuberant, the narrator’s wandering lead him from seeming paradises to the depths of pure hell. The characters our hero encounters go by absurd titles, such as Anthographers, Fabricators of useless objects, Scienters, Nibblists, and Clarificators. Yet the inhabitants of these strange realms are only too familiar: scientists dissecting an animal in their laboratory, a wise man surrounded by his devotees, politicians angling for influence, and poets expounding their rhetoric. Their hilarious antics and intellectual games reveal incisive social commentary that combines poetic imagination and philosophical depth.

Book Struggles for Self Determination

Download or read book Struggles for Self Determination written by Josiah Brownell and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2021-12-02 with total page 329 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Katanga, Rhodesia, Transkei and Bophuthatswana: four African countries that, though existing in a literal sense, were, in each case, considered by the international community to be a component part of a larger sovereign state through which all official communications and interactions were still conducted. This book is concerned with the intertwined histories of these four right-wing secessionist states in Southern Africa as they fought for but ultimately failed to win sovereign recognition. Along the way, Katanga, Rhodesia, Transkei, and Bophuthatswana each invented new national symbols and traditions, created all the trappings of independent statehood, and each proclaimed that their movements were legitimate expressions of national self-determination. Josiah Brownell provides a unique comparison between these states, viewed together as a common reaction to decolonization and the triumph of anticolonial African nationalism. Describing the ideological stakes of their struggles for sovereignty, Brownell explores the international political controversies that their drives for independence initiated inside and outside Africa. By combining their stories, this book draws out the relationships between the emergence of these four pseudo-states and the fragility of the entire postcolonial African state structure.

Download or read book Josiah s Passover written by Shigeyuki Nakanose and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2004-03-10 with total page 209 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Focusing on the celebrated story of Josiah's Passover in 2 Kings, Shigeyuki Nakanose provides a dramatic demonstration of the contribution of sociological hermeneutics to contemporary Biblical exegesis. This method complements historical-critical exegesis by reconstructing the social systems of Biblical communities in their religious as well as their economic and political orders. After introducing the sociological method and a brief consideration of historical and literary-critical readings of Josiah's Passover, Nakanose explicates the method of sociological analysis and its facets - economic, social, political, and ideological. Turning to the text itself, he shows clearly how the process of liturgical purification it describes is intimately tied to the centralization of political and commercial interests in ancient Israel. He then goes on to demonstrate, using the experience of Brazilian base communities, what happens when this critical reading is joined with critical reflection on the reader's own social location.
