Joshua was twenty when Moses led the Israelites out of Egypt. He became a minister to Moses, and before he died, the great Prophet Moses anointed Joshua to lead the people to the promised land. Joshua must overcome self-doubt and uncertainty through faith and trust in God's plan. He becomes a leader who is greatly feared and also loved. He takes sixteen-year-old Tal into his care after the young man's parents perish in a landslide. Tal is not yet of age to join the warriors of Israel on the battlefield but is commissioned to remember all he sees. He becomes Joshua's minister, and they share a passion for fulfilling God's allocation of the territories to the Twelve Tribes of Israel. Joshua's first task is to take the people across the Jordan River and seek victory at the Battle of Jericho. Tal witnesses the incredible fight and accompanies Joshua on to Ai, Makkedah, Libnah, and all the places God promised to the people. Over the years, they encounter ferocious battles, miracles, and personal triumphs and defeats. Finally, after many bloody victories, Joshua and Tal reach the place of Joshua's inheritance, Timnath Serah, in the land God allocated to the Ephraim tribe. They make a home and build a welcoming city in the shade of majestic oak and cypress trees. Joshua seeks peace within his soul and strives to live out his remaining life with his family, never giving up hope for God's chosen people. This story is based on historical events, times, and places. The characters are actual and imagined.

Book excerpt: The NIV Application Commentary helps you communicate and apply biblical text effectively in today's context. The book of Joshua recounts major transitions in the lives of God's chosen people and speaks of subjects that are difficult to comprehend, such as war and ethnic cleansing. Robert Hubbard navigates through these chapters, probing beneath the surface of the biblical text to apply the timeless themes of the book of Joshua to our lives in the twenty-first century. To bring the ancient messages of the Bible into today's context, each passage is treated in three sections: Original Meaning. Concise exegesis to help the reader understand the original meaning of the biblical text in its historical, literary, and cultural context. Bridging Contexts. A bridge between the world of the Bible and the world of today, between the original context and the contemporary context, built by discerning what is timeless in the timely pages of the Bible. Contemporary Significance. This section identifies situations that are comparable to those faced by the original audience and explores personal, cultural, and societal applications of the passage to those situations. The author also alerts the reader to problems they may encounter when seeking to apply the passage and helps them think through the issues involved. This unique, award-winning commentary is the ideal resource for today's preachers, teachers, and serious students of the Bible, giving them the tools, ideas, and insights, they need to communicate God's Word with the same powerful impact it had when it was first written.

Book Wellington s Two Front War

    Book Details:
  • Author : Joshua Moon
  • Publisher : University of Oklahoma Press
  • Release : 2012-09-13
  • ISBN : 0806186100
  • Pages : 304 pages

Download or read book Wellington s Two Front War written by Joshua Moon and published by University of Oklahoma Press. This book was released on 2012-09-13 with total page 304 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sir Arthur Wellesley's 1808–1814 campaigns against Napoleon's forces in the Iberian Peninsula have drawn the attention of scholars and soldiers for two centuries. Yet, until now, no study has focused on the problems that Wellesley, later known as the Duke of Wellington, encountered on the home front before his eventual triumph beyond the Pyrenees. In Wellington's Two-Front War, Joshua Moon not only surveys Wellington's command of British forces against the French but also describes the battles Wellington fought in England—with an archaic military command structure, bureaucracy, and fickle public opinion. In this detailed and accessible account, Moon traces Wellington's command of British forces during the six years of warfare against the French. Almost immediately upon landing in Portugal in 1808, Wellington was hampered by his government's struggle to plan a strategy for victory. From that point on, Moon argues, the military's outdated promotion system, political maneuvering, and bureaucratic inertia—all subject to public opinion and a hostile press—thwarted Wellington's efforts, almost costing him the victory. Drawing on archival sources in the United Kingdom and at the United States Military Academy, Moon goes well beyond detailing military operations to delve into the larger effects of domestic policies, bureaucracy, and coalition building on strategy. Ultimately, Moon shows, the second front of Wellington's "two-front war" was as difficult as the better-known struggle against Napoleon's troops and harsh conditions abroad. As this book demonstrates, it was only through strategic vision and relentless determination that Wellington attained the hard-fought victory. Moon's multifaceted examination of the commander and his frustrations offers valuable insight into the complexities of fighting faraway battles under the scrutiny at home of government agencies and the press—issues still relevant today.

Book excerpt: New York Times bestseller What is Jesus worth to you? It's easy for American Christians to forget how Jesus said his followers would actually live, what their new lifestyle would actually look like. They would, he said, leave behind security, money, convenience, even family for him. They would abandon everything for the gospel. They would take up their crosses daily... But who do you know who lives like that? Do you? In Radical, David Platt challenges you to consider with an open heart how we have manipulated the gospel to fit our cultural preferences. He shows what Jesus actually said about being his disciple--then invites you to believe and obey what you have heard. And he tells the dramatic story of what is happening as a "successful" suburban church decides to get serious about the gospel according to Jesus. Finally, he urges you to join in The Radical Experiment -- a one-year journey in authentic discipleship that will transform how you live in a world that desperately needs the Good News Jesus came to bring.

Book Leadership Different Servant like

Download or read book Leadership Different Servant like written by Bruce Ratzlaff and published by FriesenPress. This book was released on 2021-07-26 with total page 171 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: You’ve no doubt heard “servant-leadership” presented as today’s model of choice! You may be unaware, that leading experts contend that the term “servant-leadership” remains either undefined or at best, underdefined. By virtue of the name, you’d expect it would be different in a good way – undeniably better! But is it? Other observers say that today’s servant-leadership modelling is deeply flawed, rarely practiced, misunderstood, and potentially harmful. Mostly, it exists as a concept that each leader defines for themselves and then self-validates. Though trying to function as a servant-leader, isn’t it true that a leader must act “master-like” to perform? How can one be both a master and a servant – and lead? Might role confusion be a root-cause of the common sense of disillusionment and distrust toward present-day leaders? What is the source and functional effect of these seeming contradictions? With over six decades of combined experience at the highest levels of leadership, the authors unpack a research project that starts at the beginning. About 2,000 years ago Jesus Christ made this statement: “with you it (leadership) will be different (and servant-like).” So, is it? Is your leadership measurably “different”? Different the right ways? Is it really “servant-like” as intended by the first person to speak of the idea? On what basis do you assess this and know for sure? Do you have the self-awareness to recognize when your leadership methods are reflecting the “master” within (ego, self) and at odds with “different and servant-like” leadership? The research compiled in this book uniquely links Biblical and contemporary sources, to provide relevant and practical answers to these vital questions and more. By reading this book, you will discover: • Why there is an inherent problem with modern-day theories of Servant-leadership. • The paradigm influence of the behind-the-scenes “master” when leading. • The specific “differences” that distinguish Servant-leaders from those who are not. • How to personally align the “master” and “servant” roles in your leadership. • A refreshing self-awareness of the internal tensions you face when trying to live the servant-leadership model. • An enjoyable walk-through of lessons and uncommon stories in the Bible that offer specific and powerful insight into issues of real-world leadership. Practical to the core and refreshingly clear, this book provides a step-by-step construct of thought. You find new empowerment, awareness, leadership grounding clarity, and a fresh orientation to lead with authenticity.
