Download or read book Fundamentals and Frontiers of the Josephson Effect written by Francesco Tafuri and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2019-09-17 with total page 859 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides a comprehensive and up-to-date description of the Josephson effect, a topic of never-ending interest in both fundamental and applied physics. In this volume, world-renowned experts present the unique aspects of the physics of the Josephson effect, resulting from the use of new materials, of hybrid architectures and from the possibility of realizing nanoscale junctions. These new experimental capabilities lead to systems where novel coherent phenomena and transport processes emerge. All this is of great relevance and impact, especially when combined with the didactic approach of the book. The reader will benefit from a general and modern view of coherent phenomena in weakly-coupled superconductors on a macroscopic scale. Topics that have been only recently discussed in specialized papers and in short reviews are described here for the first time and organized in a general framework. An important section of the book is also devoted to applications, with focus on long-term, future applications. In addition to a significant number of illustrations, the book includes numerous tables for comparative studies on technical aspects.

Book Handbook of Superconductivity

Download or read book Handbook of Superconductivity written by David A. Cardwell and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2022-07-05 with total page 472 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the first of three volumes of the extensively revised and updated second edition of the Handbook of Superconductivity. The past twenty years have seen rapid progress in superconducting materials, which exhibit one of the most remarkable physical states of matter ever to be discovered. Superconductivity brings quantum mechanics to the scale of the everyday world where a single, coherent quantum state may extend over a distance of metres, or even kilometres, depending on the size of a coil or length of superconducting wire. Viable applications of superconductors rely fundamentally on an understanding of this intriguing phenomena and the availability of a range of materials with bespoke properties to meet practical needs. This first volume covers the fundamentals of superconductivity and the various classes of superconducting materials, which sets the context and background for Volumes 2 and 3. Key Features: Covers the depth and breadth of the field Includes contributions from leading academics and industry professionals across the world Provides hands-on guidance to the manufacturing and processing technologies A comprehensive reference, this handbook is suitable for both graduate students and practitioners in experimental physics, materials science and multiple engineering disciplines, including electronic and electrical, chemical, mechanical, metallurgy and others.

Book Interplay of Ferromagnetism and Superconductivity

Download or read book Interplay of Ferromagnetism and Superconductivity written by Caroline Richard and published by . This book was released on 2013 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: While ferromagnetism and conventional superconductivity appear as antagonist phases of nature, the proximity effect in hybrid S/F structures offers a unique opportunity to study their interplay. In particular, spin-triplet odd-frequency superconducting correlations may be induced in a diffusive ferromagnet. In a first part, we study the equilibrium current that may flow in hybrid S/F Josephson junctions. We exhibit signatures of odd-frequency triplet correlations. In particular, we predict the existence of a long range triplet current through a non-collinear bilayer ferromagnet with a peculiar superharmonic current phase relation. This can be viewed as the Josephson effect between a conventional superconductor and an effective triplet superconductor generated at the end of the bilayer ferromagnet. Then, we study the competition between triplet and singlet superconductivity in the temperature dependence of the critical current. Namely, the critical current flowing between two effective triplet reservoirs through a conventional superconducting layer may display a maximum at finite temperature.

Book excerpt: Nanomagnetism and spintronics is a rapidly expanding and increasingly important field of research with many applications already on the market and many more to be expected in the near future. This field started in the mid-1980s with the discovery of the GMR effect, recently awarded with the Nobel prize to Albert Fert and Peter Grünberg. The present volume covers the most important and most timely aspects of magnetic heterostructures, including spin torque effects, spin injection, spin transport, spin fluctuations, proximity effects, and electrical control of spin valves. The chapters are written by internationally recognized experts in their respective fields and provide an overview of the latest status.

Book Topics in the Theory of Small Josephson Junctions and Layered Superconductors

Download or read book Topics in the Theory of Small Josephson Junctions and Layered Superconductors written by Wissam Abdo Al-Saidi and published by . This book was released on 2003 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Abstract: Small Josephson junctions are fascinating quantum systems with numerous potential applications, especially in the still infant field of quantum computation. In the first part of the thesis, I have studied some of the quantum aspects of these systems. Specifically, I have investigated their interactions with a resonant cavity, the Berry phase of a superconducting nanocircuit, and some properties of small Josephson junction arrays. I found that at specific values of the gate voltage of a Cooper pair box, there will be a strong coupling between the Josephson junction and the cavity mode; in this case the junction behaves as a two level atom. I also, verified that if there are N identical junctions in the cavity and are tuned on resonance, the cavity-junction interaction is enhanced by a factor [square root sign]N. This behavior is a clear sign of a cooperative phenomena. Also I found that if a Josephson junction is on resonance with one of the modes of a two-mode cavity, there will be a coupling between the two modes and ultimately a frequency-up or down conversion. I have also studied the spin-wave-like excitations of a disordered two and three dimensional array of small Josephson junctions. I consider a simple form of diagonal disorder and solve for the spin-wave spectral functions using the coherent potential approximation. Finally, using quantum Monte Carlo techniques, I have constructed the phase diagram of a disordered two dimensional array of small Josephson junctions. In the second part of the thesis, I have studied the dynamics of vortices in a clean layered high-temperature superconductor. I found that the c-axis conductivity at nonzero frequencies shows a strong but not divergent increase as the vortex lattice freezing temperature is approached from above, followed by an apparently discontinuous drop. The discontinuity is consistent with the occurrence of a first-order freezing of the vortex lattice. The calculated equilibrium properties agree with previous Monte Carlo studies of the system.

Book Controllable 0 pi Josephson Junctions Containing a Ferromagnetic Spin Valve

Download or read book Controllable 0 pi Josephson Junctions Containing a Ferromagnetic Spin Valve written by and published by . This book was released on 2016 with total page 4 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Superconductivity and ferromagnetism are antagonistic forms of order, and rarely coexist. Many interesting new phenomena occur, however, in hybrid superconducting/ferromagnetic systems. For example, a Josephson junction containing a ferromagnetic material can exhibit an intrinsic phase shift of [pi] in its ground state for certain thicknesses of the material. Such '[pi]-junctions' were first realized experimentally in 2001, and have been proposed as circuit elements for both high-speed classical superconducting computing and for quantum computing. Here we demonstrate experimentally that the phase state of a Josephson junction containing two ferromagnetic layers can be toggled between 0 and pi by changing the relative orientation of the two magnetizations. These controllable 0-[pi] junctions have immediate applications in cryogenic memory, where they serve as a necessary component to an ultralow power superconducting computer. Such a fully superconducting computer is estimated to be orders of magnitude more energy-efficient than current semiconductor-based supercomputers. Here, phase-controllable junctions also open up new possibilities for superconducting circuit elements such as superconducting 'programmable logic', where they could function in superconducting analogues to field-programmable gate arrays.

Book Pair Correlations in Clean Magnetic Josephson Junctions

Download or read book Pair Correlations in Clean Magnetic Josephson Junctions written by Luis Stephan Leal and published by . This book was released on 2016 with total page 50 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Abstract: Superconducting pairs are able to leak into non-superconducting materials when placed in close proximity. In the presence of ferromagnetism pair correlations are modified by the magnetization; singlet Cooper pairs transform into a mixture of singlet and triplet correlations. In this work we analyze how pair correlations are modified in a magnetic Josephson junction in the clean limit, and consider the effect of different magnetic configurations. We use a tight-binding Hamiltonian and the Bogoliubov-de Gennes(BdG) formalism, to describe the proximity system. Applying the Bogoliubov-Valatin transformation we generate the BdG equations in matrix form. We use an iterative process to diagonalize the matrix together with solving the self-consistency relation for the pair potential [delta] numerically. From the solution we construct Gor'kov functions which are used to describe the pair amplitudes and Josephson current through the junction. Taking the simplest case first we apply our method to a normal metal Josephson junction and match our model to known results. We then apply it to a homogeneous magnetic Josephson junction and investigate how certain parameters such as magnetization and temperature affect the properties of the junction. Finally our methodology is applied to an inhomogeneous magnetic Josephson junction, to study the differing effects between gradual and abrupt changes in the magnetization on the pair correlations.
