Book Compound and Josephson High Speed Devices

Download or read book Compound and Josephson High Speed Devices written by Takahiko Misugi and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-06-29 with total page 311 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In recent years, III-V devices, integrated circuits, and superconducting integrated circuits have emerged as leading contenders for high-frequency and ultrahigh speed applications. GaAs MESFETs have been applied in microwave systems as low-noise and high-power amplifiers since the early 1970s, replacing silicon devices. The heterojunction high-electron-mobility transistor (HEMT), invented in 1980, has become a key component for satellite broadcasting receiver systems, serving as the ultra-low-noise device at 12 GHz. Furthermore, the heterojunction bipolar transistor (HBT) has been considered as having the highest switching speed and cutoff frequency in the semiconductor device field. Initially most of these devices were used for analog high-frequency applications, but there is also a strong need to develop high-speed III-V digital devices for computer, telecom munication, and instrumentation systems, to replace silicon high-speed devices, because of the switching-speed and power-dissipation limitations of silicon. The potential high speed and low power dissipation of digital integrated circuits using GaAs MESFET, HEMT, HBT, and superconducting Josephson junction devices has evoked tremendous competition in the race to develop such technology. A technology review shows that Japanese research institutes and companies have taken the lead in the development of these devices, and some integrated circuits have already been applied to supercomputers in Japan. The activities of Japanese research institutes and companies in the III-V and superconducting device fields have been superior for three reasons. First, bulk crystal growth, epitaxial growth, process, and design technology were developed at the same time.

Book The New Superconducting Electronics

Download or read book The New Superconducting Electronics written by H. Weinstock and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 460 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume is based on the proceedings of the NATO-sponsored Advanced Studies Institute (ASn on The New Superconducting Electronics (held 9-20 August 1992 in Waterville Valley, New Hampshire USA). The contents herein are intended to provide an update to an earlier volume on the same subject (based on a NATO ASI held in 1988). Four years seems a relatively short time interval, and our title itself, featuring The New Superconducting Electronics, may appear somewhat pretentious. Nevertheless, we feel strongly that the ASI fostered a timely reexamination of the technical progress and application potential of this rapid-paced field. There are, indeed, many new avenues for technological innovation which were not envisioned or considered possible four years ago. The greatest advances by far have occurred with regard to oxide superconductors, the so-called high transition-temperature superconductors, known in short as HTS. These advances are mainly in the ability to fabricate both (1) high-quality, relatively large-area films for microwave filters and (2) multilayer device structures, principally superconducting-normal-superconducting (SNS) Josephson junctions, for superconducting-quantum-interference-device (SQUID) magnetometers. Additionally, we have seen the invention and development of the flux-flow transistor, a planar three-terminal device. During the earlier ASI only the very first HTS films with adequate critical-current density had just been fabricated, and these were of limited area and had high resistance for microwave current.

Book excerpt: This book summarizes the history and present status and applications of Josephson junctions. These devices are leading elements in superconducting electronics and provide state-of-the-art performance in detection of small magnetic fields and currents, in several digital computing methods, and in medical diagnostic devices and now provide voltage standards used worldwide. Astronomical infrared (IR) telescopes, including the South Pole Telescope, use these junctions in combinations called superconducting quantum interference devices (SQUIDs).

Book Superconducting Devices

Download or read book Superconducting Devices written by Steven T. Ruggiero and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2013-07-10 with total page 411 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Superconducting Devices presents the theory, qualification, and fabrication of superconducting device elements and integrated circuitry. This book discusses the various uses of superconducting devices in many areas where their sensitivity, speed, or other characteristics stemming from the unique nature of superconductivity make them the device of choice. Organized into 10 chapters, this book begins with an overview of superconducting quantum interference devices (SQUIDs), which is the main achievement of superconductor electronics. This text then examines the status of dc and rf SQUIDs. Other chapters consider the progress in the fabrication technology for high-quality junctions and it integration technology, which are developed mainly for digital applications. This book discusses as well the increasing need for compact submillimeter sources for use in such applications as satellite communications and receivers for astronomical observation. The final chapter deals with the thin film tunneling experiments. This book is a valuable resource for physicists, chemists, materials scientists, and electrical engineers.

Book Quantum Metrology and Fundamental Physical Constants

Download or read book Quantum Metrology and Fundamental Physical Constants written by A.A. Lucas and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-12-01 with total page 647 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The object of this NATO Advanced Study Institute was to pre sent a tutorial 'introduction both to the basic physics of recent spectacular advances achieved in the field of metrology and to the determination of fundamental physical constants. When humans began to qualify their description of natural phenomena, metrology, the science of measurement, developed along side geometry and mathematics. However, flam antiquity to modern times, the role of metrology was mostly restricted to the need of commercial, social or scientific transactions of local or at most national scope. Beginning with the Renaissance, and particularly in western Europe during the last century, metrology rapidly developed an international character as a result of growing needs for more accurate measurements and common standards in the emerging indus trial society. Although the concerns of metrology are deeply rooted to fundamental sciences, it was, until recently, perceived by much of the scientific community as mostly custodial in character.

Book Quantum Flux Parametron

Download or read book Quantum Flux Parametron written by Willy Hioe and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 1991 with total page 272 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book concerns a Josephson device for supercomputers which has extremely low heat dissipation (about 106 times less than semiconductor devices and 103 times less than voltage-based Josephson devices). In the previous book on Quantum Flux Parametrons (QFPs), DC Flux Parametron, the basic device operation are described. This book deals in much greater depth on the problems which are faced by the QFP. The device characteristics are worked out in detail showing clearly the analysis methods used. A new logic gate using the QFP is described with respect to its basic scheme, operation, and ways for forming logic circuits. The problems faced by the basic QFP are much reduced in the new logic gate. As the QFP operates near the Heisenberg and Boltzmann limits for computing devices, we also show the relationship between speed and stability. The book contains the latest analytical results on QFPs.The material presented in the book can be understood with very little mathematical training or knowledge about superconducting physics. It is also self-contained and does not require reading of other material. Most of the device characteristics can be reproduced from the equations given using simple programs. A circuit simulator is not needed except for high speeds when transient behavior becomes important.
