Book Joseph Sidney Hill

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Joseph Sidney Hill: First Bishop in Western Equatorial Africa Having been asked to write some reminiscences of Bishop Hill during the period of his missionary labours in New Zealand, I thankfully avail myself of the opportunity of bearing testimony to his singleness of aim and high standard of devotedness during all those years that I enjoyed his intimate friendship. His most marked characteristic was what has been happily said of another - "an incorrigible unselfishness." He would spare himself no trouble or pains to be of service to others, and be ever ready to take the lowest room and eager to choose the heaviest end of the stick, so that he might relieve another of its weight. "Bear ye one another's burdens, and so fulfil the law of Christ," was a rule he continuously exemplified. Book The Ideal of the Self Governing Church

Download or read book The Ideal of the Self Governing Church written by C. Peter Williams and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2016-05-18 with total page 311 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It is part of current missiological orthodoxy that newly created churches should obtain independence from cross-cultural missionaries as soon as possible. It is not often realised that much Victorian missionary thinking shared that objective. This important new work examines the ideal of the self-governing church in the Victorian period through a study of the official mind of the Church Missionary Society. The study begins with an examination of Henry Venn's, the famous CMS Secretary, commitment to self-supporting, self-propagating and self-governing churches. Was he a lonely figure battling against the accepted wisdom of the mid-Victorian period? The author argues that he was not, and was, if anything a slightly conservative spokesman for much current wisdom. Far from his views being abandoned at his death, they were the accepted orthodoxy within CMS until the end of the century. Although they came under increasing attack in the nineties, it was not until the beginning of the twentieth century, particularly under the influence of Eugune Stock, that they were finally abandoned. The importance of this study lies not only in its ability to explain Victorian missionary development, but also because it takes on board the age-old issue of how quickly should a church become self-governing.

Book Pathfinders for Christianity in Northern Nigeria 1862 1940

Download or read book Pathfinders for Christianity in Northern Nigeria 1862 1940 written by Emmanuel A. S. Egbunu and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2022-01-14 with total page 128 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The rivers Niger and Benue come together at the heart of Nigeria on a map. Besides being a confluence of two great rivers, it also became the location of landmarks in Nigeria's history, notably the amalgamation of the northern and southern protectorates. As it was also a confluence of various cultural clusters, the Niger-Benue confluence communities went through three phases of Western encounters: commercial, missionary, and colonial. These have combined to shape the sociopolitical profile of northern Nigeria in various ways. In particular, it is the cradle of Christianity in northern Nigeria. Yet social historians have often assessed all three foreign influences indiscriminately and overlooked the unique and fundamental impact of the missionary encounter in providing the treasured values that midwifed social stability in such a pluralistic and sometimes volatile environment. This study undertakes a separation of the strands and sheds light on the laudable initiatives and legacies of the missionaries to ensure more clear-minded interpretations.

Book The Annual Register

Book excerpt: Continuation of the reference work that originated with Robert Dodsley, written and published each year, which records and analyzes the year’s major events, developments and trends in Great Britain and throughout the world. From the 1920s volumes of The Annual Register took the essential shape in which they have continued ever since, opening with the history of Britain, then a section on foreign history covering each country or region in turn. Following these are the chronicle of events, brief retrospectives on the year’s cultural and economic developments, a short selection of documents, and obituaries of eminent persons who died in the year.
