Book Joseph Priestley Classic Reprint

Download or read book Joseph Priestley Classic Reprint written by David Henry Peacock and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-06 with total page 70 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Joseph Priestley Joseph Priestley is probably one of the most interesting of the notable men of the eighteenth century. To his age he was perhaps most famous as a dauntless controversialist in politics and religion; he himself regarded the study of Christian Religion and Theology as his life-work, while to-day his chief title to fame rests on his scientific work. Joseph Priestley was born at Fieldhead, a hamlet included in the parish of Birstall, which lies about six miles south-west of Leeds; the district is now closely dotted with the manufacturing towns which give the West Riding of Yorkshire its wealth and fame and unfortunately also its grime and murk. Leeds, Halifax, Wakefield, Huddersfield, Bradford, are all within a comparatively short distance of Birstall. Neverthless in Priestley's day the district must have been a charming one; it is a gently undulating region, sufficiently far from the bleak moorlands of the Central Pennine Chain to be free from the grimness which so deeply influenced the lives and characters of the Bronte family, but yet sufficiently hilly to develop that sturdiness of character usually assumed to be lacking from the dwellers in flatter regions. This book was released on 2018-01-04 with total page 536 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Theological and Miscellaneous Works of Joseph Priestley, Vol. 17 The Sixteenth Volume having comprised the Discourses delivered in Philadelphia, which were principally designed to illustrate the Evidences of Divine Revelation, I have here brought together Dr. Priestley's latest labours in that great cause, to the promotion of which the efforts of his youth, his manhood, and his declining age were equally devoted. To the enlarged edition of the "Observations on the Increase of Infidelity" are now annexed the originals from Voltaire's Correspondence and the Ruins of Volney. This attention I considered as due to my Author, lest any reader should regard such extravagances as not always the language of those learned Unbelievers, but occasionally the misrepresentation of their sentiments in an inaccurate translation. I have also largely quoted, as probably little known in England, the Letter from M. Volney to Dr. Priestley, which called forth his Letters to that learned and scientific traveller. The "Comparison of the Institutions of Moses with those of the Hindoos and other Ancient Nations," which appeared in 1799, was the execution of a design expressed by the Author two years before, in the Preface to the Second Volume of Discourses, preached at Philadelphia, (Vol. XVI. p. 189.) His earlier attention to this subject appears in the Appendix to this Volume, No. IV., and in the former volumes to which I have referred (p. 132). Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Theological and Miscellaneous Works of Joseph Priestley, Vol. 5 Dr. Pries'tley, as he has mentioned in his own Preface, designed to have added this History, as a fourth Volume to the-institutes, on their first publication in 1771. But, other occupations intervened, till his materials became sufficient for a larger Work, and he had an increasing conviction of its utility and importance. His metaphysical discussions had led him still farther to consider the questions concerning the nature of Christ nor during his excursion to the Con tinent in 177 4, could he have failed to perceive the corrupt forms of religion under papal establishments, and their in fluence to foster the prejudices, and to increase the number of unbelievers. Book excerpt: Priestley in America 1794-1804 by Edgar Fahs Smith Excerpt PRIESTLEY IN AMERICA There lies before the writer a tube of glass, eleven and one half inches in length and a quarter of an inch in diameter. Its walls are thin. At one end there is evidence that an effort was made to bend this tube in the flame. Ordinarily it would be tossed aside; but this particular tube was given the writer years ago by a great-grandson of Joseph Priestley. Attached to the tube is a bit of paper upon which appear the words "piece of tubing used by Priestley." That legend has made the tube precious in the heart and to the eye of the writer. Everything relating to this wonderful figure in science, history, religion, politics and philosophy is very dear to him. On all sides of him are relics and reminders of Priestley. Not all, but many of his publications are near at hand. After perusal of these at various times, and while reading the many life sketches of Priestley, there has come the desire to know more about his activities during the decade (1794-1804) he lived in America. We are delighted to publish this classic book as part of our extensive Classic Library collection. Many of the books in our collection have been out of print for decades, and therefore have not been accessible to the general public. The aim of our publishing program is to facilitate rapid access to this vast reservoir of literature, and our view is that this is a significant literary work, which deserves to be brought back into print after many decades. The contents of the vast majority of titles in the Classic Library have been scanned from the original works. To ensure a high quality product, each title has been meticulously hand curated by our staff. Our philosophy has been guided by a desire to provide the reader with a book that is as close as possible to ownership of the original work. We hope that you will enjoy this wonderful classic work, and that for you it becomes an enriching experience.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Priestley in America, 1794-1804 The writer, in studying the lives of early Ameri can chemists, encountered the name of Joseph Priestley so frequently, that he concluded to in stitute a search with the view of learning as much as possible of the life and activities, during his exile in this country, of the man whom chemists everywhere deeply revere. This book was released on 2017-12-26 with total page 520 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Theological and Miscellaneous Works of Joseph Priestley, Vol. 11 The reader must not be offended if the same observations occur several times in the course of these Notes, as similar passages require them, and especially when their importance is very great. Without this, the exposition Of many pas sages would be exceedingly imperfect; and it would greatly perplex the reader to be referred from one part of the work to another, in order to the understanding of the passage before him. Besides, the state of the times with respect to the most prominent subjects of general discussion, requires the more frequent mention Of some topics than of others. A Pro testant expositor, for example, writing about the time of the Reformation from Popery, would naturally take frequent Opportunities of exposing the gross abuses in doctrine and discipline which had been introduced by the church of Rome, in order the more effectually to guard his hearers against the prevailing superstitions and errors. This, in a Protestant country, is not now necessary. For a similar reason, writing, as I do, in an age in which there is great prevalence of infidelity, and in which the great majority of Christians are Trinitarians, I have been led to dwell more than I should otherwise have done on circumstances that are favourable to the evidences of reve lation, and the doctrine of the Divine Unity. Had there been fewer unbelievers, and had Christians in general been Unitarians, this would not have been necessary.
