Book Joseph Anton Hemann 1816 1897

Download or read book Joseph Anton Hemann 1816 1897 written by Douglas Carl Fricke and published by Allodium Chase. This book was released on 2015-09-29 with total page 218 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: At the peak of his career in Cincinnati, Ohio, German-American Joseph A. Hemann provided details for his biographical sketch published in 1876. From this we learn of his early life as a student, his Atlantic crossing to Baltimore, his journey across the Alleghenies, his first teaching job, meeting his life-long mate, becoming a newspaper publisher and finally a banker. He was socially active in the Queen City of the West for almost forty years until a devastating sequence of events drove him out of town. This publication provides both genealogical facts and an expanded biography of Hemann’s life as a German immigrant and successful business man in Cincinnati before, during, and after the Civil War. In Section Four, the 19th century German language newspapers of Cincinnati are summarized including graphical images of the mastheads.

Book Genealogy of the Mangold Family from Bavaria to Cincinnati 1800 to 1930s

This book was released on 2017-03-31 with total page 241 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The genealogy of the Mangold family from northern Bavaria begins with Simon and Sabina in the early 1800s. The immigrant family of eight left their homeland and sailed across the Atlantic to the New World. In 1850, they arrived in New York City and traveled in-land to settle in the predominantly German neighborhood of Over-the-Rhine in Cincinnati, Ohio. Only Matthew, the oldest son of Simon and Sabina, continued the Mangold family name. With a successful downtown business, he and his wife were able to offer their children the opportunity of a college education.

Book The Diary of Bishop Frederic Baraga

Download or read book The Diary of Bishop Frederic Baraga written by N. Daniel Rupp and published by Wayne State University Press. This book was released on 2001 with total page 350 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An introductory biography of Baraga, lengthy passages from his letters, vignettes about persons in the text and a comprehensive bibliography yield an in-depth portrait of mid-nineteenth century life, especially in Michigan's Upper Peninsula. It was 1831 when Father Frederic Baraga arrived in this country from his native Slovenia. He had come to bring Christianity to the Ottawa and Chippewa Indians of the Old Northwest. Twenty years later, when Baraga first heard that he might be named Bishop of Upper Michigan, he began to keep a "daybook" or diary. Intended as a private document for his own use and reference, the diary contains a log of Baraga's missionary journeys, his observations about daily weather conditions, ship movement on the lakes, and a running account of the various works he accomplished. Between the lines of the usually concise entries, however, there are clues to Baraga's zeal, dedication, and generosity. An introductory biography of Baraga, lengthy passages from his letters, vignettes about persons in the text and a comprehensive bibliography yield an in-depth portrait of mid-nineteenth century life, especially in Michigan's Upper Peninsula.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Jewish customs and traditions about death, burial and mourning are numerous, diverse and intriguing. They are considered by many to have a respectable pedigree that goes back to the earliest rabbinic period. In order to examine the accurate historical origins of many of them, an international conference was held at Tel Aviv University in 2010 and experts dealt with many aspects of the topic. This volume includes most of the papers given then, as well as a few added later. What emerges are a wealth of fresh material and perspectives, as well as the realization that the high Middle Ages saw a set of exceptional innovations, some of which later became central to traditional Judaism while others were gradually abandoned. Were these innovations influenced by Christian practice? Which prayers and poems reflect these innovations? What do the sources tell us about changing attitudes to death and life-after death? Are tombstones an important guide to historical developments? Answers to these questions are to be found in this unusual, illuminating and readable collection of essays that have been well documented, carefully edited and well indexed.
