Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Because Charles Wright occupies a large space in contemporary American poetry, it is only natural that his readers over the years have wanted to engage him in conversation and discover more about his career and inspirations. In this collection of richly detailed interviews conducted between 1979 and 2006, Wright eloquently discusses a range of topics, including the beginning of his poetic career in Italy, his experiences at the University of Iowa, the American and European influences on his work, contemporary poets he admires, his place in Southern literature, the art of translating poetry, and such formal matters as his lineation and rhythmic phrasing, his use of syllabics, and the development of his characteristic style. An extensive bibliography of writings by and about Wright supplements the interviews.

Book excerpt: No other cycle of Josef Sudek's photos depicts the artist's beloved city as a record of many Prague localities as nostalgic witnesses to the passage of time. The elongated format of his photographs enabled him not only to command a truly panoramic view of Prague: he himself was probably surprised by the resultant optic deformations whose distinctly expressive tinge offered by his old Kodak camera provided him with a golden opportunity of evoking--in his unique style--the rendition of various forms by his older friends--Czech cubists.--From book jacket.

Download or read book Memory City written by and published by . This book was released on 2014 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Alex Webb and Rebecca Norris Webb take an elegiac look at Rochester, New York. For this project, Alex took images with his last rolls of Kodachrome, a formerly vibrant color film that can now only be processed as black-and-white. The resulting photos have a weathered quality akin to a fading memory. Alex also took to the streets of Rochester and shot in digital color--work that punctuates the black and white work with images from his signature style. Rebecca, who still uses film for all her work, responded to the medium's uncertain future by creating an elegiac refrain of color still lifes and portraits of Rochester women past and present. Woven into the book are quotes by many of the famous writers and thinkers who have been connected to Rochester, including women's rights activist Susan B. Anthony, abolitionist Frederick Douglass, and poets John Ashbery and Ilya Kaminsky. And the authors have also created a timeline on the cultural history of the city that traces the evolution of a once-vibrant and now complex city."--

Download or read book Beyond Memory written by Diane Neumaier and published by Rutgers University Press. This book was released on 2004 with total page 360 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Photography possesses a powerful ability to bear witness, aid remembrance, shape, and even alter recollection. In Beyond Memory: Soviet Nonconformist Photography and Photo-Related Works of Art, the general editor, Diane Neumaier, and twenty-three contributors offer a rigorous examination of the medium's role in late Soviet unofficial art. Focusing on the period between the mid-1950s and the late 1980s, they explore artists' unusually inventive and resourceful uses of photography within a highly developed Soviet dissident culture. During this time, lack of high-quality photographic materials, complimented by tremendous creative impulses, prompted artists to explore experimental photo-processes such as camera and darkroom manipulations, photomontage, and hand-coloring. Photography also took on a provocative array of forms including photo installation, artist-made samizdat (self-published) books, photo-realist painting, and many other surprising applications of the flexible medium. Beyond Memory shows how innovative conceptual moves and approaches to form and content-echoes of Soviet society's coded communication and a Russian sense of absurdity-were common in the Soviet cultural underground. Collectively, the works in this anthology demonstrate how late-Soviet artists employed irony and invention to make positive use of difficult circumstances. In the process, the volume illuminates the multiple characters of photography itself and highlights the leading role that the medium has come to play in the international art world today. Beyond Memory stands on its own as a rigorous examination of photography's place in late Soviet unofficial art, while also serving as a supplement to the traveling exhibition of the same title.
