Book excerpt: José Antonio Primo de Rivera y Sáenz de Heredia, 1st Duke of Primo de Rivera, 3rd Marquess of Estella, was a Spanish lawyer, parliamentarian, and martyr. Son of the General Miguel Primo de Rivera, the dictator of Spain from 1923-1930, Rivera founded the Falange Española - the Spanish Phalanx - in 1933. The Falange grew slowly at first, winning just .7% of the vote in the 1936 February elections, but swelled in numbers as the tyranny and violence in the Second Spanish Republic grew. Supporters of the Popular Front, the governing party at the time, waged an open campaign of violence against Spanish nationalists highlighted by the imprisonment, show-trial, and execution of José Antonio in November 1936. Subsequently, the Falange joined the insurrection against the Republic, and ascended to prominence among the Nationalist ranks. José Antonio's Falange would later merge with other right-wing parties to form the Falange Española Tradicionalista y de las JONS, Spain's pan-nationalist party which would go on to hold power, under Francisco Franco, for nearly four decades. José Antonio himself was posthumously known as El Ausente (The Absent One) and became a revered figure among the Spanish right. First published by Ediciones Prensa Del Movimiento Madrid in 1950, a publishing house owned by the Falange, this English-language anthology of José Antonio's speeches and quotations has been out of print since the publishing house was dissolved by the Spanish state in 1984. Antelope Hill Publishing is proud to preserve this monumental work in print form.

Book excerpt: Oswald Mosley was an English aristocrat who made his mark on British politics as the founder and leader of the British Union of Fascists. A man of intellect and determination, he rebelled against the establishment of his day. He rejected the authority of those who he believed acted not as shepherds of their people but their false friends, decrepit and slinking middle managers for international capital and finance. James Drennan's B.U.F. Oswald Mosley and British Fascism is an internal history of the British Union of Fascists which describes Mosley's dramatic journey across the English political spectrum, culminating at the formation of Britain's foremost Fascist movement. It delves into contemporary politics, condemning the political class with dry, acrid wit; and into English history, describing the ruin brought by the rise of capitalism and democracy. Drennan describes Fascism as a spiritually "pan-European movement," representing equally "an economic revolt against the obsolete capitalist system, and a spiritual reaction against the materialist and internationalist concepts of Marxism." It was, in his analysis, the heroic challenge of the men of his age to the "pessimism" of Spengler, an elite effort of the European civilization to overcome its prophesied twilight and create a new and better world. The fact that in 1934 such predictions could be made, dazzling in their unalloyed hope and confidence, appear all the more tragic in hindsight, but the legacy of the men described in this book will not be forgotten.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Written by former New York Corrections Officer, Jack McKraken, Livin' the Dream is a deep dive into the beating heart of American Corrections. This book shines a light on the absurdities, inadequacies, and organized chaos of the system that stands between ordinary Americans and the worst violent offenders. Author of science-fiction novel Beyond Mortal Measure, Jack McKraken breaks into the world of nonfiction writing from his own perspective as he describes a ground-level view of a single Corrections Officer while simultaneously examining the entirety of the US prison system. From the tedium of the day-to-day rounds to the politics of the NYSCOPBA (New York State Correctional Officers & Police Benevolent Association) McKraken depicts the conditions and constraints within which Correction Officers are forced to operate by an entrenched bureaucracy. The book describes prisoner interactions and altercations candidly, often humorously, leaving the reader with a unique perspective into American Justice. Antelope Hill is proud to publish Livin' the Dream as its second original work. Jack McKraken's work is not just a memoir of exciting anecdotes and useful tips, but an account of how one can survive and keep their sanity within one of the most soul-crushing settings known to man. This title is a must-read for anyone who may find themselves in prison, regardless of which side of the bars.

Book excerpt: The National Bestseller “Focused and persuasive... Bray’s book is many things: the first English-language transnational history of antifa, a how-to for would-be activists, and a record of advice from anti-Fascist organizers past and present.”—THE NEW YORKER As long as there has been fascism, there has been anti-fascism — also known as “antifa.” Born out of resistance to Mussolini and Hitler, the antifa movement has suddenly burst into the headlines amidst opposition to the Trump administration and the alt-right. In a smart and gripping investigation, historian and activist Mark Bray provides a detailed survey of the full history of anti-fascism from its origins to the present day — the first transnational history of postwar anti-fascism in English. Today, critics say shutting down political adversaries is anti-democratic; antifa adherents argue that the horrors of fascism must never be allowed the slightest chance to triumph again. Bray amply demonstrates that antifa simply aims to deny fascists the opportunity to promote their oppressive politics, and to protect tolerant communities from acts of violence promulgated by fascists. Based on interviews with anti-fascists from around the world, Antifa details the tactics of the movement and the philosophy behind it, offering insight into the growing but little-understood resistance fighting back against fascism in all its guises.

Book Lessons of the Spanish Revolution

Download or read book Lessons of the Spanish Revolution written by Vernon Richards and published by PM Press. This book was released on 2019-09-01 with total page 336 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Lessons of the Spanish Revolution examines the many ways in which Spain’s revolutionary movement contributed to its own defeat. Was it too weak to carry through the revolution? To what extent was the purchase of arms and raw materials from outside sources dependent upon the appearance of a constitutional government inside Republican Spain? What chances had an improvised army of guerrillas against a trained fighting force? These were some of the practical problems facing the revolutionary movement and its leaders. But in seeking to solve these problems, the anarchists and revolutionary syndicalists were also confronted with other fundamental questions. Could they collaborate with political parties and reformist unions? Given the circumstances, was one form of government to be supported against another? Should the revolutionary impetus of the first days of resistance be halted in the interests of the armed struggle against Franco or be allowed to develop as far as the workers were prepared to take it? Was the situation such that the social revolution could triumph and, if not, what was to be the role of the revolutionary workers? Originally written as a series of weekly articles in the 1950s and expanded, republished, and translated into many languages over the years, Vernon Richards’s analysis remains essential reading for all those interested in revolutionary praxis.

Book Spain 1923 1948 Civil War and World War

Download or read book Spain 1923 1948 Civil War and World War written by Arthur F. Loveday and published by . This book was released on 2020-09-07 with total page 324 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Spain 1923-1948, Civil War & World War was originally published in England, 1948 to add context to the conduct of Spain under Franco during the Spanish Civil War. Arthur Loveday targeted the British political consciousness with the chief aim of helping Spain's entry into the post-war NATO Allied framework. Loveday depicts Franco as the unifying force behind a coalition of formerly left leaning Falangists and largely monarchist Requetes. According to Loveday, the Falange was gradually purged of its most ideological members during the World War. Spain is presented as having successfully distanced itself from the shadow of Fascism. Loveday's portrait of Franco's reactionary Spain appealed to Britain's desire for allies in the early years of what would become the Cold War. Loveday's work is a well-sourced and even-handed account of Spain's political and economic development in the early part of the 20th century. Spain 1923-1948, Civil War & World War is a necessary addition to the library of every scholar of mid-century European history. Visit https://www.antelopehillpublishing.com/ for more great books.
