Download or read book Interpreting Welfare and Relief in the Middle East written by Nefissa Naguib and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2008 with total page 255 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Based on different problematic and methodological perspectives and new sources, this book's contributions lie in the close study of welfare beyond the religious divides, codifications and indoctrinations. The time span - from 1850 to the present day - represents moments of colonisations, occupations, wars and conflicts which resulted in un-met needs and broken down institutions. What are the stories behind health care, schools, orphanages and vocational schools, maternity homes and hostels? The collection of chapters examine different involvements in welfare activities not only as contextualised in stable communities and nations, but also as they emerge in vulnerable states and disintegrating societies. Furthermore, this volume brings forth the historical and contemporary voices of those who provide relief and the beneficiaries of such efforts. At the core of this book are themes concerned with humanitarianism in relation to people's unique experiences, state and non-governmental organisations, gender and modernity.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Kingdom of Jordan stands strategically amidst the countries of the Near East, bordered by Israel, Syria, Iraq, and Saudi Arabia. A small country, poor in resources, it is torn by conflicting tensions and policies and by strife between pro-Western and pro-Soviet elements. This study of Jordan in the English language surveys all aspects of Jordan's life: the land, the people, their history, politics, economy, society, and culture. Mr. Patai fully considers the issue of Westernization versus traditionalism and its probable bearing on Jordan’s future. Originally published in 1958. Download or read book Migrations in Jordan written by Jalal Al Husseini and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2024-06-27 with total page 305 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Jordan currently hosts the second largest percentage of registered refugees in the world: three million out of its eleven million inhabitants. Its experience in hosting migrants and refugees precedes its independence in 1946, with the arrival of Circassians, Chechens, and Armenians from the late 19th century. Jordan thus constitutes a unique observatory for reception policies and long-term settlement of different migrant groups. Based on original empirical and archival material, this volume focuses on migrations caused by conflicts, wars, and crises underscoring their articulation with longstanding human mobility. It sheds light on the cumulative and processual dimensions of Jordan's reception policies and migrants' settlement strategies. It identifies the multiple actors involved in the management of migrants and, conversely, the latter's contribution to the Jordanian social, economic, political, and urban fabric. The first part of the volume examines the policies adopted by the Jordanian authorities and international organizations to regulate access to basic services and to the labour market, and explores the economic and political factors underlying them. The second part analyzes the effects of Jordan's policies on the territorial distribution and settlement of migrants. How have these policies, combined with the adaptation strategies of migrants contributed to shaping new urban spaces? The third part focuses on capacity of the migrants to activate, establish, (re)build, and intersect different kinds of solidarity networks within the context of protracted displacement.
