Little did he know then what the future held in store. At the age of eighteen he was converted to Christianity and immediately became interested in missionary work. After attending Knox College in Canada, he set out for China with his wife, Rosalind. Many hardships and trials followed. Their first child died in the spring of the following year. Others were later claimed by malaria and menengitis. In 1900 the Goforths, along with others, had to flee before the Boxer uprising. Their escape was a miracle in itself. Goforth of China is the amazing story of a man with unusual vision and determination.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Dr. A.T. Schofield says: "One thing to be borne in mind is that since the days of Pentecost there is no record of the sudden and direct work of the Spirit of God upon the souls of men that has not been accompanied by events more or less abnormal. It is, indeed, on consideration, only natural that it should be so. We cannot expect an abnormal inrush of Divine light and power, so profoundly affecting the emotions and changing the lives of men, without remarkable results. As well expect a hurricane, an earthquake, or a flood, to leave nothing abnormal in its course, as to expect a true Revival that is not accompanied by events quite out of our ordinary experience."

Book When the Spirit s Fire Swept Korea

Download or read book When the Spirit s Fire Swept Korea written by Jonathan Goforth and published by CreateSpace. This book was released on 2015-06-06 with total page 34 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: MY BELOVED MOTHER, Mrs. Jonathan Goforth, would have been writing this introductory word, but last May 31, at three A.M., at the age of seventy-eight, she laid down her pen which had been so signally used by the guiding hand of God. Like the husband whose life and work she shared with such heroic devotion through nearly fifty years in China, Mother was spared any long illness and suffering, passing suddenly into the "gloryland." Her face lit up with expectation, and her last words rang with confidence: "This is the summons from my King. I am ready to go! " And now, being dead, they are both yet speaking to our hearts through their writings. By My Spirit, the one book Father wrote alone, has been recently reprinted by the Zondervan Publishing House because they are convinced that its message on revival is a most timely and urgently needed one. This little booklet, in which Father tells the story of the Korean Revival as he lived through it, is considered a fitting companion publication to By My Spirit. In rereading this, the message has, I must confess, searched, then scorched, my own soul. We of this generation may well ask ourselves, as he does: "Do we really believe in God the Holy Ghost?" Even in these days of unprecedented world catastrophe the Church of Jesus Christ is shamefully neglecting the powerhouse of prayer, and putting faith in the might of men and armaments, instead of giving the Holy Spirit of God His rightful place of sovereign power. May He use this story of the great revival fire that swept Korea to awaken our Laodicean Church to the stark fact that victory and eternal salvation will come "not by [man] might, nor by [man] power,"-as Father often (quoted his favorite text-"but BY MY SPIRIT, saith the Lord of hosts." Book How I Know God Answers Prayer

Download or read book How I Know God Answers Prayer written by Rosalind Goforth and published by Grand Rapids, Mich. : Zondervan Publishing House. This book was released on 1921 with total page 164 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: IT seems fitting that this little book of personal testimonies to answered prayer should have a brief introductory word as to how they came to be written. The question has been asked by some who read many of these testimonies as they appeared in the pages of The Sunday School Times: "How could you write such personal and sacred incidents in your life?" I could not have written them but for a very clear, God-given leading. The story is as follows: When in Canada on our first furloughs I was frequently amazed at the incredulity expressed when definite testimony was given to an answer to prayer. Sometimes this was shown by an expressive shrug of the shoulders, sometimes by a sudden silence or turning of the topic of conversation, and sometimes more openly by the query: "How do you know that it might not have happened so, anyway?" Gradually the impression deepened: "If they will not believe one, two, or a dozen testimonies, will they believe the combined testimonies of one whole life?" The more I thought of what it would mean to record the sacred incidents connected with answers to prayer the more I shrank from the publicity, and from undertaking the task. There were dozens of answers far too sacred for the public eye, which were known only to a few, others known only to God. But if the record were to carry weight with those who did not believe in the supernatural element in prayer, many personal and scarcely less sacred incidents must of necessity be made public.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Have you ever thought how our modern world with all its artificial devices, its complicated ways, and its false gods would seem to you if you were suddenly moved into the midst of it after having grown up in the old-fashioned way without knowing anything else? If you could look at our world with fresh eyes, wouldn’t it give you a whole new perspective on life and help you to rediscover its true values? Well, Tammy, the lovable young girl you’ll meet in these pages, does just that. Before things began to happen, you see, Tammy had lived all her seventeen years on a Mississippi shantyboat. It was a very simple, quiet, isolated life she had had with her grandparents. But then, after Pete Brent was rescued from the river, things changed, and Tammy found herself at Brenton Hall, where there were some marvelous contrivances and concoctions and also some curious ideas and customs and ways of speaking. Life wasn’t so simple for Tammy any more. In fact, Pete’s mother, Professor Brent, Pete himself, the lovely Barbara, Aunt Renie, and Ernie (especially Ernie) posed many problems. But Tammy, a most unusual and most enduring creature, came through with flying colours. And her story—a warm, lively, engaging story—is the kind that makes you laugh aloud, perhaps stirs a tear or two as well, and along with the entertainment, brings inspiration, a fresh perspective through which you may find strength and a new peace of mind.

The vivid pen-sketches titled "The Blind Chief," "The Idol Maker," and "The Gambler's End" take the reader into the heart of Chinese village life. The triumphant accounts of God's grace in the lives of "A Chinese Shakespeare" and "A Faithful Pastor," and the record of how the students were reached makes for vigorous and enheartening reading. The closing chapter contains a brief sketch of the famous Christian General, Marshall Feng Yu-hsiang.
