Thomas Chittenden, by whom he had five sons and four daughters. 'i' In March 1781 he was elected Sheriff of the County of Bennington. The duties of the office at that early period of the history of Vermont were onerous and perplexing to the very last degree. The great mass of the people were extremely poor and deeply in debt.
