Book excerpt: A shocking, touching and humorous debut, Jonah Sees Ghosts blends magical realism with a study of the ways alcohol and abuse shapes personalities within a family. At 15, Jonah Hart is a boy with a problem he's afraid to share: Not only does he see ghosts, but when he dreams, he travels outside his body. As the ghosts become more and more aggressive, Jonah withdraws into his dream world, where he is forced to make a stand from the full depths of abandonment and isolation in a last stab at redemption. 'Sullivan writes with beautiful, introspective clarity.' - Henry Rollins

Her family was murdered by vampires five years ago and she has trained long and hard to become a hunter. She finally encounters the nest of bloodsuckers who ruined her life and she intends to exact her revenge on them all. In a horrible twist of fate, she becomes one of the very creatures she’s been stalking and her entire world is turned upside down. If the hunters who took her in and trained her learn what she has turned into, she will become their next target. A chance encounter with a sexy Scottish hunter changes everything. Connor McAllister is more than he seems. He is a shapeshifter who works for a secret organisation known as the Hunter Elite. Ari is exactly the sort of creature the team needs on their side. That is if the supernatural monster killers allow her to live. She must prove she isn’t a danger to humans, or she suspects that she won’t leave their compound alive. Hunting The Truth: Ari has a choice to make that could change everything between herself and her ghostly best friend. She must decide whether to tell Jonah about his past, or to let him remain clueless about how he’d come to be haunting the Hunter Elite’s mansion. She can’t predict if the knowledge will set him free, or if it will have dire consequences. When the team visits Spencer Von Hades’ mansion, Ari senses something is very wrong from the moment she steps inside the mysterious house. While none of her friends see anything strange, she knows it is dangerous and potentially deadly. A creepy butler lurks within the halls and he is just as strange as the house itself. When vampires attack several families in one town, Ari and Connor are sent to assist Jake Everett and his hunters to track them down. Bloodsuckers are increasing in numbers and seem to be coordinating with each other. It is unheard of for the undead to congregate and they suspect something terrible is brewing in the supernatural underworld. They need to find out more so they can stop their diabolical plans. Hunting A Master: In order to learn more about their adversary, Ari joins Spencer on a secret mission to question a master vampire. Their hope is that the bloodsucker will be able to give them some insights into Morgwen’s plans. It won’t be easy to extract the information from their ancient captive, but Von Hades is determined to get the answers they need. He will use Ari as his tool to achieve his ends no matter the cost to her. When the Hunter Elite are sent on their next mission, they encounter a nest of monsters that have never existed before. More and more new creatures are cropping up, but they don’t know where they are coming from, or how to stop the influx. A disturbing pattern is emerging, but they don’t have all the pieces to solve this puzzle yet. Even with the chaos that is looming over the horizon, Ari knows she won’t face it alone. Her bond with Connor has deepened beyond either of their expectations, but it comes with risks. If word about their forbidden relationship spreads throughout the supernatural community, it could result in dangerous repercussions for them both.

Book JONAH IN THE SYNOPTIC TRADITION

Download or read book JONAH IN THE SYNOPTIC TRADITION written by Isaac Agbenohevi and published by Fulton Books, Inc.. This book was released on 2024-02-28 with total page 221 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is the fruit of a dissertation which seeks to get beyond the impasse in the modern interpretation of the "Sign-Jonah" Traditions by building upon the achieved results of previous studies (both diachronic and synchronic) examining some Jewish Writings from Second Temple Judaism (the historical ambience of the Synoptic tradition), engaging recently refined concepts and methods of literary-narrative analyses such as the use of synkrisis and utilizing the revised understanding of typology in examining the specific role of Jonah in Luke's Christology. Applying the redactional-critical approach, typological exegesis, and literary (narrative) analysis, it examines three specific questions: (1) what the appropriate "image" of Jonah in Second Temple Judaism (historical) is, (2) what the specific form of the "Sign-Jonah" saying in the gospel narratives (literary) is, and (3) how Jonah's figure contribute to Lucan Christology (theological). The entire study concludes with some revealing elements which shed light on the questions which underpin the dissertation: (1) Jonah's figure was replete and frequently invoked in Second Temple Judaism (his fish ordeal, preaching in Nineveh, death experience, considered as sign, commonplace recourse in crisis situation); and (2) "Sign-Jonah" and "Solomon-Queen" traditions (pieced together with the Beelzebul controversy) are interwoven in narration to make a syncretic-typological correlation between Jesus and Jonah (prophetic character in person and activity) and bring a clear definition to the enigmatic logion to semeion Iona; 3). Jonah's figure, in the context of Luke's Christology, serves as an element of both continuity (consistency with OT tradition) and discontinuity (redefinition--Jesus is the fulfillment and plenitude of OT tradition).

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Despite an indifferent father and a mother who develops a serious mood disorder, young twins Kevin and Robert, and their younger brother Jonah, experience an idyllic early life in rural Manitoba during the 1950s while in the loving care of their grandparents. However, that life comes to an abrupt end after their father converts to the esoteric beliefs of the Radio Church of God, a radical fundamentalist sect that preaches strict discipline in preparation for an anticipated end time worldwide cataclysm. Forced to move back home to live with their parents, the boys are victimized by their father’s extreme religious fanaticism, which for the twins, includes indoctrination sessions, beatings, and confinement in a basement coal cellar. Rather than giving in to their father’s brutality and brainwashing efforts, the twins remain strong and find clever ways to survive their circumstances and even thrive within them. Determined to be their younger brother’s keeper, the twins and Jonah form an unbreakable bond – a proverbial threefold cord. It is a bond of mutual support for one another that enables them to better cope with their father’s abusive and controlling behaviour. Although fictional, The Threefold Cord explores many of the real-life beliefs and practices of the Radio Church of God and deftly examines the grey area between a cult and a religion, between discipline and abuse, and asks what it takes for a person to decide where those lines should be drawn.
