Book Predicting Outcomes in United States Japan Trade Negotiations

Download or read book Predicting Outcomes in United States Japan Trade Negotiations written by Norio Naka and published by Praeger. This book was released on 1996-04-18 with total page 304 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The U.S.-Japan Structural Impediments Initiative (SII) was an attempt in which U.S. and Japanese officials tried to solve trade frictions and adjust their economic systems both by creating an international epistemic community and regime and by accelerating domestic structural change through a joint bureaucratic structure (working group) and mutual pressure. With four multidimensionally-layered conceptual models, the book systematically describes and explains the political process of the SII, the reasons for its initiation and reaching agreements. Unlike most studies on U.S.-Japan trade negotiations which use the theoretically undefined case study method, the author tested propositions focussing on different factors (level of U.S. pressure, size and strength of various transgovernmental coalitions, and level of perception gaps) for different degrees of Japanese trade concessions across five SII issue areas (saving-investment patterns, the distribution system, exclusionary business practices, land policy, and keiretsu) by combining a detailed case study with content analysis of newspaper indexes and meeting records. The book adds to the tradition of U.S.-Japan trade negotiation/decision-making research with great insights and practical implications. It further develops Graham Allison's approach, applying it to international trade negotiation process, thereby enhancing the power of describing, explaining, and predicting outcomes of international trade negotiations. Intended for graduate students and specialists studying U.S.-Japan trade negotiations as well as policymakers practicing such negotiations. To know why and how the SII was initiated and agreed upon and what factors contributed to different degrees of Japanese trade concessions, four multidimensionally-layered conceptual models systematically describe and explain the political process of the SII. Book Developing Countries in the WTO Legal System

Download or read book Developing Countries in the WTO Legal System written by Chantal Thomas and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2009-04-15 with total page 536 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With contributions from some of the leading experts in international trade, law, and economics, Joel P. Trachtman and Chantal Thomas have compiled a comprehensive volume that looks at the positioning of developing countries within the WTO system. These chapters address some of the most pressing issues facing these countries, while reflecting on Robert E. Hudec's groundbreaking book, Developing Countries in the GATT Legal System. In his landmark contribution, Hudec argued against preferential and non-reciprocal treatment for developing countries. He did so on the basis of a combination of economic, political and legal insights that persuasively demonstrated that non-reciprocal treatment would not benefit developing countries. It is a testament to Hudec's legacy that his analysis is still the object of scholarly discussion more than 20 years later. The first part of this book evaluates the general situation of developing countries within the WTO. The second part examines market access and competition law within these countries. Lastly, it discusses the special arrangements these countries have with international financial institutions, the developing country's capacity to litigate, and an analysis of the country's level of participation in WTO dispute settlements.

Book Japanese Distribution Channels

Download or read book Japanese Distribution Channels written by Takeshi Kikuchi and published by Psychology Press. This book was released on 1994 with total page 136 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Japanese Distribution Channels, readers have the work of Japanese marketing scholars who present in-depth and intimate knowledge of distribution in Japan. These scholars have not only closely studied these systems for many years and in numerous cases worked in them, but have also, as consumers, relied on these channels to meet their needs. This combination of scholarship and experience is an ideal synergy that is unmatched in the existing literature on Japanese distribution channels. It stands in stark contrast to other books on Japanese distribution where foreign researchers spend a few weeks or months visiting Japan and then become "instant experts" on Japanese distribution by writing about what they have seen. Although there are many misconceptions about Japanese distribution channels, this first and only guidebook in English on the subject clarifies many of these misconceptions. The authoritative contributors reveal a great depth of insight on many aspects of distribution systems in Japan, including: structure of Japanese distribution channels nature of Japanese markets public policy toward distribution changes in distribution structure environmental effects on distribution intrachannel relationships in Japan business practices in Japan effects on distribution channels from Toys "R" Us trends and problems in Japanese distribution Those who seek an understanding of Japanese distribution channels--international business executives from top to middle management, marketing managers, export managers, government officials, consultants, academics and students--benefit from reading this penetrating analysis. The depth of expertise and insight provided by Japanese research scholars who have studied, worked in, and relied on Japanese distribution channels throughout their lifetimes cannot be found in any other source. Business executives, academics, consultants, government officials, and any serious students of Japanese distribution channels can significantly enhance their knowledge from reading this authoritative book.
