Book Matrix Functions of Bounded Type An Interplay Between Function Theory and Operator Theory

Download or read book Matrix Functions of Bounded Type An Interplay Between Function Theory and Operator Theory written by Raúl E. Curto and published by American Mathematical Soc.. This book was released on 2019-09-05 with total page 100 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this paper, the authors study matrix functions of bounded type from the viewpoint of describing an interplay between function theory and operator theory. They first establish a criterion on the coprime-ness of two singular inner functions and obtain several properties of the Douglas-Shapiro-Shields factorizations of matrix functions of bounded type. They propose a new notion of tensored-scalar singularity, and then answer questions on Hankel operators with matrix-valued bounded type symbols. They also examine an interpolation problem related to a certain functional equation on matrix functions of bounded type; this can be seen as an extension of the classical Hermite-Fejér Interpolation Problem for matrix rational functions. The authors then extend the H∞-functional calculus to an H∞¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯+H∞-functional calculus for the compressions of the shift. Next, the authors consider the subnormality of Toeplitz operators with matrix-valued bounded type symbols and, in particular, the matrix-valued version of Halmos's Problem 5 and then establish a matrix-valued version of Abrahamse's Theorem. They also solve a subnormal Toeplitz completion problem of 2×2 partial block Toeplitz matrices. Further, they establish a characterization of hyponormal Toeplitz pairs with matrix-valued bounded type symbols and then derive rank formulae for the self-commutators of hyponormal Toeplitz pairs.

Book Function Spaces Theory and Applications

Download or read book Function Spaces Theory and Applications written by Ilia Binder and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2024-01-12 with total page 487 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The focus program on Analytic Function Spaces and their Applications took place at Fields Institute from July 1st to December 31st, 2021. Hilbert spaces of analytic functions form one of the pillars of complex analysis. These spaces have a rich structure and for more than a century have been studied by many prominent mathematicians. They also have several essential applications in other fields of mathematics and engineering, e.g., robust control engineering, signal and image processing, and theory of communication. The most important Hilbert space of analytic functions is the Hardy class H2. However, its close cousins, e.g. the Bergman space A2, the Dirichlet space D, the model subspaces Kt, and the de Branges-Rovnyak spaces H(b), have also been the center of attention in the past two decades. Studying the Hilbert spaces of analytic functions and the operators acting on them, as well as their applications in other parts of mathematics or engineering were the main subjects of this program. During the program, the world leading experts on function spaces gathered and discussed the new achievements and future venues of research on analytic function spaces, their operators, and their applications in other domains. With more than 250 hours of lectures by prominent mathematicians, a wide variety of topics were covered. More explicitly, there were mini-courses and workshops on Hardy Spaces, Dirichlet Spaces, Bergman Spaces, Model Spaces, Interpolation and Sampling, Riesz Bases, Frames and Signal Processing, Bounded Mean Oscillation, de Branges-Rovnyak Spaces, Operators on Function Spaces, Truncated Toeplitz Operators, Blaschke Products and Inner Functions, Discrete and Continuous Semigroups of Composition Operators, The Corona Problem, Non-commutative Function Theory, Drury-Arveson Space, and Convergence of Scattering Data and Non-linear Fourier Transform. At the end of each week, there was a high profile colloquium talk on the current topic. The program also contained two semester-long advanced courses on Schramm Loewner Evolution and Lattice Models and Reproducing Kernel Hilbert Space of Analytic Functions. The current volume features a more detailed version of some of the talks presented during the program.

Book A Glimpse at Hilbert Space Operators

Download or read book A Glimpse at Hilbert Space Operators written by Sheldon Axler and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2011-04-13 with total page 360 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Paul Richard Halmos, who lived a life of unbounded devotion to mathematics and to the mathematical community, died at the age of 90 on October 2, 2006. This volume is a memorial to Paul by operator theorists he inspired. Paul’sinitial research, beginning with his 1938Ph.D. thesis at the University of Illinois under Joseph Doob, was in probability, ergodic theory, and measure theory. A shift occurred in the 1950s when Paul’s interest in foundations led him to invent a subject he termed algebraic logic, resulting in a succession of papers on that subject appearing between 1954 and 1961, and the book Algebraic Logic, published in 1962. Paul’s ?rst two papers in pure operator theory appeared in 1950. After 1960 Paul’s research focused on Hilbert space operators, a subject he viewed as enc- passing ?nite-dimensional linear algebra. Beyond his research, Paul contributed to mathematics and to its community in manifold ways: as a renowned expositor, as an innovative teacher, as a tireless editor, and through unstinting service to the American Mathematical Society and to the Mathematical Association of America. Much of Paul’s in?uence ?owed at a personal level. Paul had a genuine, uncalculating interest in people; he developed an enormous number of friendships over the years, both with mathematicians and with nonmathematicians. Many of his mathematical friends, including the editors ofthisvolume, whileabsorbingabundantquantitiesofmathematicsatPaul’sknee, learned from his advice and his example what it means to be a mathematician.

Book Mutual Invadability Implies Coexistence in Spatial Models

Download or read book Mutual Invadability Implies Coexistence in Spatial Models written by Richard Durrett and published by American Mathematical Soc.. This book was released on 2002 with total page 133 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In (1994) Durrett and Levin proposed that the equilibrium behavior of stochastic spatial models could be determined from properties of the solution of the mean field ordinary differential equation (ODE) that is obtained by pretending that all sites are always independent. Here we prove a general result in support of that picture. We give a condition on an ordinary differential equation which implies that densities stay bounded away from 0 in the associated reaction-diffusion equation, and that coexistence occurs in the stochastic spatial model with fast stirring. Then using biologists' notion of invadability as a guide, we show how this condition can be checked in a wide variety of examples that involve two or three species: epidemics, diploid genetics models, predator-prey systems, and various competition models.

Book Multi Interval Linear Ordinary Boundary Value Problems and Complex Symplectic Algebra

Download or read book Multi Interval Linear Ordinary Boundary Value Problems and Complex Symplectic Algebra written by William Norrie Everitt and published by American Mathematical Soc.. This book was released on 2001 with total page 79 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A multi-interval quasi-differential system $\{I_{r},M_{r},w_{r}:r\in\Omega\}$ consists of a collection of real intervals, $\{I_{r}\}$, as indexed by a finite, or possibly infinite index set $\Omega$ (where $\mathrm{card} (\Omega)\geq\aleph_{0}$ is permissible), on which are assigned ordinary or quasi-differential expressions $M_{r}$ generating unbounded operators in the Hilbert function spaces $L_{r}^{2}\equiv L^{2}(I_{r};w_{r})$, where $w_{r}$ are given, non-negative weight functions. For each fixed $r\in\Omega$ assume that $M_{r}$ is Lagrange symmetric (formally self-adjoint) on $I_{r}$ and hence specifies minimal and maximal closed operators $T_{0,r}$ and $T_{1,r}$, respectively, in $L_{r}^{2}$. However the theory does not require that the corresponding deficiency indices $d_{r}^{-}$ and $d_{r}^{+}$ of $T_{0,r}$ are equal (e. g. the symplectic excess $Ex_{r}=d_{r}^{+}-d_{r}^{-}\neq 0$), in which case there will not exist any self-adjoint extensions of $T_{0,r}$ in $L_{r}^{2}$. In this paper a system Hilbert space $\mathbf{H}:=\sum_{r\,\in\,\Omega}\oplus L_{r}^{2}$ is defined (even for non-countable $\Omega$) with corresponding minimal and maximal system operators $\mathbf{T}_{0}$ and $\mathbf{T}_{1}$ in $\mathbf{H}$. Then the system deficiency indices $\mathbf{d}^{\pm} =\sum_{r\,\in\,\Omega}d_{r}^{\pm}$ are equal (system symplectic excess $Ex=0$), if and only if there exist self-adjoint extensions $\mathbf{T}$ of $\mathbf{T}_{0}$ in $\mathbf{H}$. The existence is shown of a natural bijective correspondence between the set of all such self-adjoint extensions $\mathbf{T}$ of $\mathbf{T}_{0}$, and the set of all complete Lagrangian subspaces $\mathsf{L}$ of the system boundary complex symplectic space $\mathsf{S}=\mathbf{D(T}_{1})/\mathbf{D(T}_{0})$. This result generalizes the earlier symplectic version of the celebrated GKN-Theorem for single interval systems to multi-interval systems. Examples of such complete Lagrangians, for both finite and infinite dimensional complex symplectic $\mathsf{S}$, illuminate new phenoma for the boundary value problems of multi-interval systems. These concepts have applications to many-particle systems of quantum mechanics, and to other physical problems.

Book Basic Global Relative Invariants for Homogeneous Linear Differential Equations

Download or read book Basic Global Relative Invariants for Homogeneous Linear Differential Equations written by Roger Chalkley and published by American Mathematical Soc.. This book was released on 2002 with total page 223 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Given any fixed integer $m \ge 3$, the author presents simple formulas for $m - 2$ algebraically independent polynomials over $\mathbb{Q}$ having the remarkable property, with respect to transformations of homogeneous linear differential equations of order $m$, that each polynomial is both a semi-invariant of the first kind (with respect to changes of the dependent variable) and a semi-invariant of the second kind (with respect to changes of the independent variable). These relative invariants are suitable for global studies in several different contexts and do not require Laguerre-Forsyth reductions for their evaluation. In contrast, all of the general formulas for basic relative invariants that have been proposed by other researchers during the last 113 years are merely local ones that are either much too complicated or require a Laguerre-Forsyth reduction for each evaluation.

This book was released on 2002 with total page 89 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Under minimal assumptions on a function $\psi$ the authors obtain wavelet-type frames of the form $\psi_{j, k}(x) = r DEGREES{(1/2)n j} \psi(r DEGREESj x - sk), j \in \integer, k \in \integer DEGREESn, $ for some $r > 1$ and $s > 0$. This collection is shown to be a frame for a scale of Triebel-Lizorkin spaces (which includes Lebesgue, Sobolev and Hardy spaces) and the reproducing formula converges in norm as well as pointwise a.e. The construction follows from a characterization of those operators which are bounded on a space of smooth molecules. This characterization also allows us to decompose a broad range of singular integral operators in ter
