It also presents well developed definitions that have been harmonized with joint doctrine and discusses those "best practices" that have proven of value during on-going military operations, exercises, and experimentation. The handbook is meant to educate the joint community about the joint fires and targeting processes and to offer some useful techniques and procedures that can be used in the combatant commands and subordinate units by commanders and their staffs.

This Handbook provides examples from combatant commands and joint task forces to assist in the prosecution of time-sensitive targets.
