We pay particular attention to how these trends shape and are shaped by European Union (EU) and United States (U.S.) food assistance policy and practice, and highlight the principles to which donors can adhere to move international food assistance forward.

Book Hunger in the Balance

Download or read book Hunger in the Balance written by Jennifer Clapp and published by Cornell University Press. This book was released on 2015-10-27 with total page 216 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Food aid has become a contentious issue in recent decades, with sharp disagreements over genetically modified crops, agricultural subsidies, and ways of guaranteeing food security in the face of successive global food crises. In Hunger in the Balance, Jennifer Clapp provides a timely and comprehensive account of the contemporary politics of food aid, explaining the origins and outcomes of recent clashes between donor nations-and between donors and recipients. She identifies fundamental disputes between donors over "tied" food aid, which requires that food be sourced in the donor country, versus "untied" aid, which provides cash to purchase food closer to the source of hunger. These debates have been especially intense between the major food aid donors, particularly the European Union and the United States. Similarly, the EU's rejection of GMO agricultural imports has raised concerns among recipients about accepting GMO foodstuffs from the United States. For the several hundred million people who at present have little choice but to rely on food aid for their daily survival, Clapp concludes, the consequences of these political differences are profound.

Book From Output to Outcome

  • Publisher : Amsterdam University Press
  • Release : 2004
  • ISBN :
  • Pages : 124 pages

Download or read book From Output to Outcome written by Jos van Beurden and published by Amsterdam University Press. This book was released on 2004 with total page 124 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study traces the fascinating history of the Policy and Operations Evaluation Department (IOB) of the Directorate-General for Development Cooperation and, from 1996, of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. In 1977 Jan Pronk, the Minister for Development Cooperation, established an independent review unit that would provide him with timely, reliable information on the quality of Dutch development assistance projects, to counter both the often overly positive reports from his own staff, and the attacks on Dutch development assistance policy in parliament and the media. A quarter century later it is difficult to imagine foreign assistance without an evaluation department. Yet, the IOB's course has been far from smooth. The authors describe the challenges to its independence and tackle the question of the effects of the department's many reports.

Book Food Aid in Sudan

    Book Details:
  • Author : Susanne Jaspars
  • Publisher : Zed Books Ltd.
  • Release : 2018-05-15
  • ISBN : 1786992116
  • Pages : 234 pages

Download or read book Food Aid in Sudan written by Susanne Jaspars and published by Zed Books Ltd.. This book was released on 2018-05-15 with total page 234 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 2004, the UN’s Humanitarian Coordinator for Sudan called Darfur the world’s worst humanitarian crisis. A comprehensive food aid programme soon followed, at the time the largest in the world. Yet by 2014, while the crisis continued, international agencies found they had limited access to much of the population, with the Sudanese regime effectively controlling who received aid. As a result, acute malnutrition remains persistently high. Food Aid in Sudan argues that the situation in Sudan is emblematic of a far wider problem. Analysing the history of food aid in the country over fifty years, Jaspars shows that such aid often serves to enrich local regimes and the private sector while leaving war-torn populations in a state of permanent emergency. Drawing on her decades of experience as an aid worker and researcher in the region, and extensive interviews with workers in the food aid process, Jaspars brings together two key topics of our time: the failure of the humanitarian system to respond to today’s crises, and the crisis in the global food system. Essential reading for students and researchers across the social sciences studying the nature and effectiveness of contemporary humanitarianism, development and international aid.
