This book was released on 2010 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Supporting the expected high data rates required by wireless Internet and high-speed multimedia services is one of the basic requirements in broadband mobile wireless systems. However, the achievable capacity and data rate of wireless communication systems are limited by the time-varying nature of the channel. Efficient techniques for combating the time-varying effects of wireless channels can be achieved by utilizing different forms of diversity. In recent years, transmit diversity based on space-time coding (STC) has received more attention as an effective technique for combating fading. On the other hand, most existing space-time diversity techniques have been developed for flat-fading channels. Given the fact that wireless channels are generally frequency-selective, in this thesis, we aim to investigate the performance of space-time diversity schemes for wideband code-division multiple-access (WCDMA) systems over frequency-selective fading channels. The proposed receiver in this case is a rake-type receiver, which exploits the path diversity inherent to multipath propagation. Then, a decorrelator detector is used to mitigate the multiple access interference (MAI) and the known near-far problem. We derive the bit error rate (BER) expression over frequency-selective fading channels considering both the fast and slow fading cases. Finally, we show that our proposed receiver achieves the full system diversity through simulation and analytical results. Most of the work conducted in this area considers perfect knowledge of the channel at the receiver. Hence, channel identification brings significant challenges to multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) CDMA systems. In light of this, we propose a channel estimation and data detection scheme based on the superimposed training-based approach. The proposed scheme enhances the performance by eliminating the MAI from both the channel and data estimates by employing two decorrelators; channel and data decorrelators. The performance of the proposed estimation technique is investigated over frequency-selective slow fading channels where we derived a closed-form expression for the BER as a function of the number of users, K, the number resolvable paths, L, and the number of receive antennas, V . Finally, our proposed scheme is shown to be more robust to channel estimation errors. Furthermore, both the analytical and simulation results indicate that the full system diversity is achieved. Considering that training estimation techniques suffer either from low spectral efficiency (i.e., conventional training approach) or from high pilot power consumption (i.e., superimposed training-based approach), in the last part of the thesis, we present an iterative joint detection and estimation (JDE) using the expectation-maximization (EM) algorithm for MIMO CDMA systems over frequency-selective fading channels. We also derive a closed-form expression for the optimized weight coefficients of the EM algorithm, which was shown to provide significant performance enhancement relative to the conventional equal-weight EM-based signal decomposition. Finally, our simulation results illustrate that the proposed receiver achieves near-optimum performance with modest complexity using very few training symbols.

Book Structures for Kalman based Detection Over Rayleigh Fading Channels

Download or read book Structures for Kalman based Detection Over Rayleigh Fading Channels written by Mohammad Javad Omidi and published by . This book was released on 1998 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Channel estimation is an essential part of many adaptive detection techniques proposed for data transmission over fading channels. For the frequency selective Rayleigh fading channel an autoregressive representation is proposed based on the fading model parameters. The parameters of this representation are determined based on the fading channel characteristics, making it possible to employ the Kalman filter as the best estimator for the channel impulse response. For IS-136 formatted data transmission, the Kalman filter is employed with the Viterbi algorithm in a Per-Survivor Processing (PSP) fashion and the overall bit error rate performance is shown to be superior to that of detection techniques using the RLS and LMS estimators. To allow more than one channel estimation per symbol interval, Per-Branch Processing (PBP) method is introduced as a general case of PSP. The Kalman filter can lead to significant improvement in the receiver bit error rate performance. However, a Kalman filter is a complex algorithm and is sensitive to roundoff errors. Different implementation methods are considered for measurement update and time update equations of the Kalman filter. The unit-Lower-triangular-Diagonal Correction (LDC) algorithm is used for the time update equations, and systolic array structures are proposed for its implementation. For the overall implementation of joint data and channel estimation, parallel structures are proposed to perform both the Viterbi algorithm and channel estimation. A new approach is proposed for the implementation of the Kalman filter based on differential channel states. This leads to a robust differential Kalman filtering algorithm that can be simplified further to ease the implementation without any major loss in performance.

Abstract: Abstract of the Thesis Entitled Estimation of Fading Channel in DS-CDMA Multiuser Communications Systems submitted by Fung Chun Yu for the degree of Master of Philosophy at the University of Hong Kong in December 2002 Multipath fading and multiuser access interference are two major impairments in direct-sequence code-division multiple-access (DS-CDMA) systems. Efficient channel estimation and multiuser detection techniques play important roles in overcoming these deficiencies. This thesis is concerned with the design of a space-time (ST) blind adaptive receiver for DS-CDMA systems and the accompanied channel estimation algorithm. A new space-time decorrelating RAKE (ST-DRAKE) receiver is developed for blind reception of CDMA signals in frequency-selective fading channels. It has the advantage that only the knowledge of the desired user's signature waveform is required and therefore no transmission of training sequence is needed. The ST-DRAKE receiver consists of two parts. The first part is a set of constrained adaptive filters that are designed to suppress interference based on the minimum output energy criterion. These filters are implemented in a structure analogous to the general sidelobe canceller in array processing, which is implemented by a multistage Weiner filter is employed to reduce the complexity of the receiver. The second part of the ST-DRAKE receiver coherently combines the outputs of the constrained adaptive filters and gives an estimate of the transmitted signal. Simulation results show that the ST- DRAKE delivers significant performance improvement by exploiting the spatial diversity of the antenna array. The problem of estimating fast fading channels in the proposed receiver is also addressed. The time-varying channel is modeled as an autoregressive process and the Kalman filter is employed to estimate the time-varying channel coefficients. A robust Kalman filter based on the M-estimate cost function is also developed to suppress impulsive noise present in the received signals. Simulation results show that the Kalman filter provides more accurate channel estimate to the ST-DRAKE than using the decomposition method. Simulation results also show that the coupled receiver has a performance comparable to the optimum minimum mean-squared error receiver with known channel information. Book On the Achievable Rate of Stationary Fading Channels

This book was released on 2011-08-14 with total page 317 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volumes discusses various aspects regarding the capacity/achievable data rate of stationary Rayleigh fading channels. First, it analyses bounds on the achievable data rate with zero-mean proper Gaussian input symbols, which are capacity achieving in the coherent case, i.e., in case of perfect channel knowledge at the receiver. These bounds are tight in the sense that the difference between the upper and the lower bound is bounded for all SNRs. The lower bound converges to the coherent capacity for asymptotically small channel dynamics. Furthermore, these bounds are extended to the case of multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) channels and to the case of frequency selective channels. In a further part, the present work studies the achievable rate with receivers based on synchronized detection and a code-aided channel estimation. For a specific type of such a receiver an approximate upper bound on the achievable rate is derived. The comparison of this approximate upper bound and the achievable data rate with receivers using synchronized detection based on a solely pilot based channel estimation gives an approximate upper bound on the possible gain by using this kind of code-aided channel estimation in comparison to the conventional receiver using a solely pilot based channel estimation. In addition, the achievable data rate with an optimal joint processing of pilot and data symbols is studied and a lower bound on the achievable rate for this case is derived. In this context, it is also shown which part of the mutual information of the transmitter and the receiver is discarded when using the conventional receiver with synchronized detection based on a solely pilot based channel estimation.

Book Joint OFDM Symbol Detection and Channel Estimation Over Doubly Selective Channels

Download or read book Joint OFDM Symbol Detection and Channel Estimation Over Doubly Selective Channels written by Yi Wang and published by . This book was released on 2014 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing (OFDM) is a promising technique for high data rate transmission, that is widely used in modern wireless communication systems because of its good performance over frequency selective channels. However OFDM systems are sensitive to channel time variation resulting in Inter-Carrier Interference (ICI), that without suitable detection methods can degrade performance. Channel State Information (CSI) is essential to various OFDM data detection schemes and its acquisition is a critical factor, in particular over time-varying channels. This work considers a technique for integrating the Kalman filter channel estimation with a version of Sphere Decoding (SD) adapted to OFDM detection. By modelling the OFDM system in frequency domain as a Multiple Input Multiple Output (MIMO) system, we derive a powerful SD technique for data detection. By approximating the channel matrix as banded, we are able to maintain a feasible complexity for SD and deliver competitive performance when compared to other existing scheme. For acquisition of CSI, the Basis Expansion (BE) method is used to model the time-varying channels and a Kalman filter is constructed for tracking. The Kalman filter employs decision-feedback from the SD, requiring only a low pilot symbol density, and hence improves bandwidth efficiency. The performance of this scheme is evaluated by Monte-Carlo computer simulations. Results show that compared with competing algorithm, this scheme provides performance gains. When it is used over moderate time-varying LTE channels, this scheme shows good performance even in the presence of carrier phase noise. " --

Book Channel Estimation for OFDM in Fast Fading Channels

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The increasing demand for high data rate transmission over broadband radio channels has imposed significant challenges in wireless communications. Accurate channel estimation has a major impact onthe whole system performance. Specifically, reliable estimate of the channel state information (CSI) is more challenging for orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) systems in doubly selective fading channels than for the slower fading channels over which OFDM has been deployed traditionally. With the help of a basis expansion model (BEM), a novel multivariate autoregressive (AR) process is developed to model the time evolution of the fast fading channel. Relying on pilot symbol aided modulation (PSAM), a novel Kalman smoothing algorithm based on a second-order dynamic model is exploited, where the mean square error (MSE) of the channel estimator is near to that of the optimal Wiener filter. To further improve the performance of channel estimation, a novellow-complexity iterative joint channel estimation and symbol detection procedure is developed for fast fading channels with a small number of pilots and low pilot power to achieve the bit errorrate (BER) performance close to when the CSI is known perfectly. The new channel estimation symbol detection technique is robust to variations of the radio channel from the design values and applicable to multiple modulation and coding types. By use of the extrinsic information transfer (EXIT) chart, we investigate the convergence behavior of the new algorithm and analyze the modulation, pilot density, and error correction code selection for good system performance for a given power level. The algorithms developed in this thesis improve the performance of the whole system requiring only low ratios of pilot to data for excellent performance in fast fading channels.

Abstract: Abstract of the thesis entitled New Channel Estimation and Multiuser Detection Algorithms For Multicarrier (MC)-CDMA Communications Systems submitted by Cheng Hui for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy at the University of Hong Kong in September 2005 Multicarrier code division multiple access (MC-CDMA) has been recently proposed as an efficient multicarrier transmission scheme for supporting multiple access communications. However, MC-CDMA is an interference-limited system, which is rather sensitive to multiple access interference (MAI). Multiuser detection techniques are critical to mitigate MAI. Meanwhile, channel estimation is essential to the coherent detection of MC-CDMA signals. This thesis is dedicated to new channel estimation and multiuser detection algorithms for wireless MC-CDMA systems. New blind constrained minimum output energy (CMOE)-based and subspace-based multiuser detection and channel estimation algorithms are first developed. In particular, a new blind CMOE receiver is proposed. The proposed CMOE receiver is based on recursive least square (RLS) updating, and it minimizes the receiver''s output energy while preserving the components of the desired signal. iiiBy imposing quadratic weight constraint, the CMOE detector is made more robust against the channel and correlation matrix estimation errors, and a better performance over the standard CMOE detector is obtained. The steady-state signal-to-interference-plus-noise ratio (SINR) performance of the blind adaptive CMOE and training adaptive minimum mean squared-error (MMSE) detectors is also analyzed. A blind mode decision-directed MMSE detector is then proposed to further improve the performance of the blind CMOE receivers. Simulation results show that the blind mode decision-directed MMSE detector substantially improves the system performance when the frequency-selective channel is slowly varying. Blind and group-blind subspace-based MMSE multiuser detectors are also developed, where the channel coefficients can be blindly estimated. The proposed group-blind multiuser detector considerably outperforms the blind subspace-based method in uplink MC-CDMA channels. It exploits the spreading codes of a group of known users within the cell, while suppressing the unknown interferers from other cells using the MMSE principle. The adaptive implementation of the blind and group-blind multiuser detectors is also studied based on signal and noise subspace tracking algorithms. Numerical simulations show that the convergence of the projection approximation subspace tracking with deflation (PASTd) algorithm is quite slow, while the more complicated bi-iteration square-root singular value decomposition (Bi-SVD) signal subspace tracker presents performance close to the solution with exact singular value decomposition (SVD). MC-CDMA systems are sensitive to narrowband interference (NBI). A new robust channel estimator and a robust multiuser detector are developed to combat time-varying NBI. In particular, an efficient weighted recursive least M-estimate (WRLM) algorithm is proposed to recursively estimate the frequency-selective ivfading channel while providing improved robustness to the time-varying NBI. Furthermore, a weighted least M-estimate (WLM) detector is developed to jointly suppress MAI and time-varying NBI. Simulations show that the proposed robust channel estimator and multiuser d
