Download or read book Choral Singing written by Ursula Geïsler and published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing. This book was released on 2014-10-16 with total page 295 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What role does contemporary choral activity play in the construction of social and musical meaning? How can historical knowledge and analysis shed light on contemporary choral problems and possibilities? And how can choral research promote the development and expansion of new music today? Questions like these are addressed in this anthology from a wide range of disciplines and perspectives. The book comprises a selection of papers presented at the International Conference on the Concepts and Practices of Choral Singing in Lund, Sweden, in October 2012. The aim of the conference was to highlight the contemporary dynamic developments in choral research, and to explore interdisciplinary investigations and interaction between practice-based and historical approaches. The conference was also the fourth meeting of the network “Choir in Focus”, which was initiated in 2009 at Southern Choral Centre (Körcentrum Syd), a joint venture between Malmö Academy of Music, the Department of Musicology, Odeum (all at Lund University), Malmö Symphony Orchestra and Music South (Musik i Syd), Sweden. The continuous ambition of the network has been to provide a forum for co-operation across national and disciplinary borders and to encourage debates around the musical and social function of choirs in modern society as mirroring collective and individual needs for meaning, music-making and well-being. In the introductory chapter, the editors describe choral practice as a field of simultaneous (re)presentation, (re)production and (re)creation, and suggest that these three aspects may be seen as umbrella themes for the fifteen chapters of the anthology. The authors come from Sweden, Norway, Finland, Estonia, Germany, United Kingdom, Portugal and Belgium, and explore choral practice from differing theoretical and methodological starting points. Together, they contribute to a transdisciplinary discussion about the origins, functions and meanings of choral singing.

Download or read book On the Frontlines written by Nathan L. Street and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2019-11-20 with total page 145 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Our culture is under attack. The battlefield is covered with the ruins of landmarks and monuments of the past dedicated to morality and natural law. Throughout the centuries, Christians have held high the banner of Jesus Christ for the world to see. The culture has been protected and defended by the Christian soldiers in America since its founding. However, there is a darkness spreading throughout the land. Leftist doctrines are gaining footholds and acquiring the fortresses of old. The hallowed bastions of learning, called American public schools, once venerated by the world, are now languishing, crippled by the leftist ideologies they have now adopted in place of classical liberal education. Christianity, once the standard moral center of the community, has now been replaced by pluralism, relativism, and postmodernism. The epicenter of this transformation has been and still is the public schools. On the Frontlines: Exposing Satan's Tactics to Destroy a Generation is a clarion call from a Christian educator and administrator to the church. It is time we, as a body of believers, stand up and be counted among those who refuse to allow the religion of the left to prevail.

Just about any life improvement requires one thing: changing behavior. You’ll either have to start a new behavior, refine an old one, or stop an unwanted behavior altogether. The decision to change behavior can be daunting because changing habits and routines is often difficult. Changes can bring about good, but they can also upend usual ways of doing things. This book guides you in how to change just about any behavior for what the apostle Paul called “a more excellent way.” The guidance is rooted in cutting-edge social science research joined with Christian understanding of the good life and how to achieve it. From this blended perspective, the book presents a general model for how you can effectively change your behavior. It gives you dozens of practical, proven strategies that you can start using right away. What’s the secret to behavior change? It happens best when a person combines several strategies. First, they start small. Next, they find ways to motivate themselves and to cultivate their spiritual gift of self-control. Finally, in all steps, they invite Christ into the process: through Scripture, prayer, and fellowship. Imagine what your life would be like if you could better match what you do daily to what matters most to you both now and eternally! Matching your behavior to your core values with God alongside is the key to creating a truly beautiful life.

Book Heroism and Global Politics

Download or read book Heroism and Global Politics written by Veronica Kitchen and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2018-10-12 with total page 232 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The rhetoric of heroism pervades politics. Political leaders invoke their own heroic credentials, soldiers are celebrated at sporting events, ordinary citizens become state symbols (or symbols of opposition), and high profile celebrities embody a glamorized, humanitarian heroism. Using analytical tools drawn from international relations, gender studies, war studies, history, and comparative politics, this book examines the cultural and political phenomenon of heroism and its relationship to the process of creating, sustaining and challenging political communities. Arguing that heroism is socially constructed and relational, the contributors demonstrate that heroes and heroic narratives always serve particular interests in the ways that they create and uphold certain images of states and other political communities. Studying the heroes that have been sanctioned by a community tells us important things about that community, including how it sees itself, its values and its pressing needs at a particular moment. Conversely, understanding those who are presented in opposition to heroes (victims, demonized opponents), or who become the heroes of resistance movements, can also tell us a great deal about the politics of a state or a regime. Heroes are at once the institutionalization of political power, and yet amorphous--one can go from being a hero to a villain in short order. This book will appeal to scholars and students working on topics related to international relations, gender, security and war studies, comparative politics, state building, and political communities.

Book Drowning in a Mother s Womb

Download or read book Drowning in a Mother s Womb written by Ciara L. Anderson and published by Ciara Anderson. This book was released on 2009-01-15 with total page 300 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Drowning in a Mother's Womb approaches the story of a tumultuous childhood of a young girl in her own words, emotions and feelings. As she relives the horrific incidents of violent abuse, you will empathize with her every struggle and hang on her every word spoken in the language and culture of her experience. The most vital messages from her story are that regardless of the circumstances and situations that this young girl faced, having lived a most colorful life by the age of 13, she found herself drowning in her own resentment for a mother who never felt any remorse for her negligent parenting. Therefore, the girl continued to press toward her future, grasping at any and every place for help. When she least expected it, her broken spirit gave way to what felt like the walls of her mind closing in on her, and she found herself in the psychiatric ward of a local hospital. Ciara allows the reader to identify with a child's need to be nurtured and supported even when the nurturer remains absent and unsupportive.
