Book Greetings from Alabama A Pictorial History in Vintage Postcards

Download or read book Greetings from Alabama A Pictorial History in Vintage Postcards written by Wade Hall and published by NewSouth Books. This book was released on 2016-09-01 with total page 224 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Although he was a native of Bullock County, Alabama, Wade Hall -- teacher, writer, poet, critic, interviewer, folklorist, and documentarian -- spent most of his fifty-year career in Kentucky. But he was never emotionally far from his home as evidenced by his passion for collecting vintage Alabama postcards. In his lifetime he amassed 10,000, which he then graciously gave to the University of Alabama Libraries and Troy University in a large joint bequest that also included rare books, quilts, folk art, letters and more. These postcards date from the late 1800s to the mid-20th century and offer a fascinating and diverse picture of the state. The meaning of postcards that could be purchased as a travel souvenir is largely forgotten today when cameras are commonplace. But the value of Hall's stunning collection cannot be missed. The some 400 cards featured in Greetings from Alabama are revealing of scenes familiar and rare. From Birmingham's Vulcan to Mobile's Bellingrath Gardens, from Enterprise's boll weevil monument to Huntsville's rockets, from Helen Keller's home to William Rufus King's resting place, the scenes offer captivating glimpses of Alabama history.

Book The Grand Haven Area 1905 1975 in Vintage Postcards

Download or read book The Grand Haven Area 1905 1975 in Vintage Postcards written by Wallace K. Ewing Ph.D. and published by Arcadia Publishing. This book was released on 2003-06-17 with total page 132 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: By the start of the 20th century, the Grand Haven area had begun to establish itself as a desirable vacation spot, as well as the center of a vigorous manufacturing base. Trains, stately steamers, and private automobiles brought visitors to the resorts of their choice, while many new companies joined other well-established firms, broadening employment opportunities for local workers. It was a time of significant change, and the picture postcard helped record those changes. In this book, a companion to The Grand Haven Area: 1860-1960, the history of Grand Haven and the surrounding area is revealed through picture postcards. Lakeshore scenes, resorts, and cottages are paired with images of bridges, streets, homes, and people at work and play to document a remarkable era of originality, enjoyment, and progress.

The author addresses work with children and adults, both individually and in groups, illustrated by case history examples. A final chapter concentrates on the needs of the therapist and shows how dramatherapy can be used as a personal resource.

Book The Photographic Legacy of Frances Benjamin Johnston

Download or read book The Photographic Legacy of Frances Benjamin Johnston written by Maria Elizabeth Ausherman and published by University of Alabama Press. This book was released on 2022-08-15 with total page 298 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "One of the first women to work in an emerging field dominated by men, Frances Benjamin Johnston (1864-1952) achieved acclaim in the late nineteenth century as an accomplished photographer. Her career spanned nearly seventy years, during which she became respected for her portraiture, artistic studies, photojournalism, and garden and architectural photography. She was instrumental in defining the medium and inspiring women to train in and appreciate photography. Though the socially well-connected Johnston was popular among prestigious celebrities of the day - she worked as the official White House photographer for five administrations - it is her monumental, nine-state survey of southern American architecture that stands as her most significant contribution to the history and development of photography both as art and as documentary. Drawing upon Johnston's original papers and photographs from the Library of Congress, Maria Ausherman's examination of this extraordinary photographer's career shows both the early origins of her style and vision and her attempts to change society through her art"--

Book An Eye for the Tropics

    Book Details:
  • Author : Krista A. Thompson
  • Publisher : Duke University Press
  • Release : 2007-03-15
  • ISBN : 0822388561
  • Pages : 421 pages

Download or read book An Eye for the Tropics written by Krista A. Thompson and published by Duke University Press. This book was released on 2007-03-15 with total page 421 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Images of Jamaica and the Bahamas as tropical paradises full of palm trees, white sandy beaches, and inviting warm water seem timeless. Surprisingly, the origins of those images can be traced back to the roots of the islands’ tourism industry in the 1880s. As Krista A. Thompson explains, in the late nineteenth century, tourism promoters, backed by British colonial administrators, began to market Jamaica and the Bahamas as picturesque “tropical” paradises. They hired photographers and artists to create carefully crafted representations, which then circulated internationally via postcards and illustrated guides and lectures. Illustrated with more than one hundred images, including many in color, An Eye for the Tropics is a nuanced evaluation of the aesthetics of the “tropicalizing images” and their effects on Jamaica and the Bahamas. Thompson describes how representations created to project an image to the outside world altered everyday life on the islands. Hoteliers imported tropical plants to make the islands look more like the images. Many prominent tourist-oriented spaces, including hotels and famous beaches, became off-limits to the islands’ black populations, who were encouraged to act like the disciplined, loyal colonial subjects depicted in the pictures. Analyzing the work of specific photographers and artists who created tropical representations of Jamaica and the Bahamas between the 1880s and the 1930s, Thompson shows how their images differ from the English picturesque landscape tradition. Turning to the present, she examines how tropicalizing images are deconstructed in works by contemporary artists—including Christopher Cozier, David Bailey, and Irénée Shaw—at the same time that they remain a staple of postcolonial governments’ vigorous efforts to attract tourists.
