Book John Stuart Mill Socialist

Download or read book John Stuart Mill Socialist written by Helen McCabe and published by McGill-Queen's Press - MQUP. This book was released on 2021-03-15 with total page 368 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Best known as the author of On Liberty, John Stuart Mill remains a canonical figure in liberalism today. Yet according to his autobiography, by the mid-1840s he placed himself "under the general designation of Socialist." Taking this self-description seriously, John Stuart Mill, Socialist reinterprets Mill's work in its light. Helen McCabe explores the nineteenth-century political economist's core commitments to egalitarianism, social justice, social harmony, and a socialist utopia of cooperation, fairness, and human flourishing. Uncovering Mill's changing relationship with the radicalism of his youth and his excitement about the revolutionary events of 1848, McCabe argues that he saw liberal reforms as solutions to contemporary problems, while socialism was the path to a better future. In so doing, she casts new light on his political theory, including his theory of social progress; his support for democracy; his feminism; his concept of utility; his understanding of individuality; and his account of "the permanent interests of man as a progressive being," which is so central to his famous harm principle. As we look to rebuild the world in the wake of financial crises, climate change, and a global pandemic, John Stuart Mill, Socialist offers a radical rereading of the philosopher and a fresh perspective on contemporary meanings of socialism.

Download or read book The Stray Sod Country written by Patrick McCabe and published by A&C Black. This book was released on 2011-09-05 with total page 353 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It is 1958, and as Laika, the Sputnik dog is launched into space, Golly Murray, the Cullymore barber's wife, finds herself oddly obsessing about the canine cosmonaut. Meanwhile, Fonsey 'Teddy' O'Neill, is returning, like the prodigal son, from overseas, with brylcream in his hair, and a Cuban-heeled swagger to his step, having experienced his coming-of-age in Butlin's, Skegness. Father Augustus Hand is working on a bold new theatrical production for Easter, which he, for one, knows will put Cullymore on the map. And, as the Manchester United football team prepare to take off from Munich airport, James A Reilly sits in his hovel by the lake outside town, with his pet fox and his father's gun, feeling the weight of an insidious and inscrutable presence pressing down upon him. From the closed terraces and back lanes of rural Ireland to the information highway and global separations of our own time, The Stray Sod Country is at once an homage to what we think we may have lost and a chilling reminder that the past has never really passed. With echoes of Peyton Place, and Fellinni's Amarcord, and with a sinister, diabolical narrator at its heart, this is at once a story of a small town - with its secrets, fears, friendships and betrayals - and a sweeping, grand guignol of theatrical extravagance from one of the finest writers of his generation.

Book Vegan Myth Vegan Truth

Download or read book Vegan Myth Vegan Truth written by John McCabe and published by . This book was released on 2013-03 with total page 452 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this book author John McCabe tackles the myths, rumors, and lies surrounding the vegan diet. While hundreds of thousands of Americans undergo heart surgery largely because they have eaten a diet heavy in meat, dairy, and eggs, some people consider the vegan diet to be extreme. However, what should be considered extreme is a populace consuming massive quantities of foods that are known to cause human disease, including meat, dairy, eggs, processed sugars and salts, synthetic chemicals, and damaging fats. What should not be considered extreme is a low fat vegan diet rich in raw fruits, vegetables, nuts and seeds, which is a diet that infuses health. It is a diet that, when followed, greatly reduces the chances of experiencing what have become common degenerative and chronic diseases, including cardiovascular disease, cancer, diabetes, obesity, MS, Alzheimer's, Chron's, arthritis, osteoporosis, macular degeneration, and kidney disease. What have become the common foods in America are also becoming common in other countries. Because of this, rates of chronic and degenerative diseases are increasing in other countries. Incidence of heart attacks, strokes, diabetic coma, and conditions such as erectile dysfunction largely can be traced back to low quality dietary choices, and chiefly to diets rich in animal protein, unhealthful fats, and synthetic chemicals. Modern scientific studies done at institutions around the planet are concluding that a diet free of animal protein and rich in fruits and vegetables is a way of greatly improving health while reducing common diseases. From an environmental standpoint, a plant based diet is more sustainable, and it reduces the use of fossil fuels, improving the conditions of the environment and wildlife. Everyone from world-class athletes to political leaders, corporate executives, actors, and common people are tuning in to the health benefits of the vegan diet. This book helps to explain the benefits fo the diet, and how to go about it so that vibrant health can be experiences, and the chances of experiencing common diseases is greatly reduced.

Book excerpt: Throughout the history of Earth there have been a number of mass extinctions caused by various catastrophic events, including meteorite collisions and volcanic eruptions. It is recognized that there have been five great extinctions. Earth is now experiencing the Sixth Great Extinction, and it is being caused by one species: Humans. From the depths of the oceans to the tops of the mountains, among the smallest living things to the largest, life is rapidly dying. The chief cause of modern extinction is the massive use of fossil fuels. Humans are digging deeper into and mining vast areas of the planet to extract petroleum, coal, and natural gas. The burning of fossil fuels is causing rapid climate change, desertification, the melting of polar ice, and the warming and acidification of the seas. The number one use of fossil fuels relates to food. The chief components of pollution and environmental destruction relating to food are the breeding of billions of farmed animals, using most of the farmland on every continent to grow food for those animals, and destroying topsoil, meadows, wetlands, plains, streams, aquifers, and forests to expand the livestock industry, and the grain industry that feeds it. The seas are being rapidly depleted of fish, crustaceans, and marine mammals, and this is because of overfishing and the taking of billions of creatures from the oceans to use as fertilizer to grow food for and to include as protein in the feed given to billions of farmed animals, including farmed fish. Every year, a variety of life forms, including sea creatures, land animals, birds, amphibians, and plants become closer to extinction, or do become extinct. The chief cause relates to human choices for food and fuel. What role are you playing in the Sixth Great Extinction?
